I wanted to read something Gothic and this satisfied that craving. A beautifully written novel but it also had plenty of shortcomings. There were many racist comments, the too-convenient plot resolutions. I found a lot of the story beats too overdramatic, even for a gothic novel. Jane, although sweet and relatable also comes off as an “I'm not like other girls“ type character because although she is not described as pretty men still desire her.

Good reading week aside from Friday. I Finished A Storm of Swords with the buddy reads group, which was really good. I am still making steady progress with Jane Eyre, I hope to finish it this upcoming week.

Taking out a lot of books that I am not really focusing on atm. Finished Emma this week and it was really fun and clever but I also expected more out of it. Picked up Jane Eyre after it, and I have been making steady progress with it. I'm pretty sure I will be finishing ASOS this week, so looking forward to that.

Charlotte Brontë (21 April 1816 – 31 March 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived into adulthood and whose novels became classics of English literature. She is best known for her novel Jane Eyre, which she published under the gender neutral pen name Currer Bell. Jane Eyre went on to become a success in publication, and is widely held in high regard in the gothic fiction genre of literature. ??
“My Master,” he says, “has forewarned me. Daily He announces more distinctly,—‘Surely I come quickly!' and hourly I more eagerly respond,—'Amen; even so come, Lord Jesus!”

I finally read Jane Eyre and I can see the hype! So much happening in this novel! I think as a modern reader my reception is likely different as there was not any moment during this novel that I liked Mr Rochester. He bugged the hell out of me. Just the biggest red flag all of the time. Not one endearing quality for me. (Cont. in comments 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻)
I hit the used bookstore lottery today with four incredibly-priced Cranford Collection editions - Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Little Women, and P&P. Heading home to giddily arrange these on my shelf. ❤️
Every time I finish this book I miss the characters instantly. Forever my favourite 🕯️👰♀️
What more can I add about a classic? I can tell you that I read this for my Victorian Lit class and we roasted Rochester on the daily. 😂 234/1,001 #BookSpin for September #FlourishAndBlott Set/Written Before 2000 #TBRTarot Which Has a Person‘s Name in the Title #RoryGilmoreChallenge

I had not read this since I was a teen. It is sometimes difficult to read these books without overlaying today‘s social mores and attitudes. Jane is just so young. And whilst Rochester is nowhere near the worst of the heroes of these novels, I did not like the way he teased her and threw his relationship with other women in her face.
I listened to this as a prelude to re-reading Wide Sargasso Sea, which I previously loved.
Hi all - I want Jane Eyre to be my next book. In fact, I want to reread Beauty and the Beast at the same time to explore the thematic similarities. 📚 Can anyone recommend an edition with 12 point font? I struggle with many of the classic prints bc the fonts are often quite small. Thx
Thank you for tagging me, @Eggs ❤
1. Jane Eyre - she just came along when I needed her most and I was so impressed by her.
2. Zofia (The Gilded Wolves) - she's just WOW! The way she faced her fears and grew is just amazing!
3. Gideon the Ninth/Harrow the Ninth/Nona the Ninth - they all sort of belong together and are just kick-ass in their own ways.
I also kept on thinking about Murderbot 😅

My book club picked this one as our first read of the year and I‘m looking forward to hearing what everyone thought tomorrow! I listened to it this time around and Thandie Newton‘s performance was really wonderful! Obviously no surprises but it was nice to remember parts that I had forgotten- and it‘s easy to see why this is one of the classics that continues to be popular as it is over 175 years old! Dear Reader, I loved listening to it!
@TracyReadsBooks This is the Jane Eyre copy! (Excuse the crappy lighting 😂) It's my favorite of the three!
How exciting! New Bronte collections at the British Library.

Charlotte's writing is so beautifully descriptive and engaging and her world-building so engrossing that you can picture every element of the story so vividly. Her characters come alive on the page. Rochester has his issues, of course, but is also a well written, well developed, complex character and the story itself is a good one. I would definitely recommend it for someone who wants to get lost in a good book for a while!
Jane Eyre was on my wishlist for a long time. Glad that I waited to listen to this narration. Thandiwe Newton is brilliant - bringing the characters and the slow narrative to life.
Funnily, I read Wide Sargasso Sea before I listened to Jane Eyre. But, the competing narratives really offered a very well rounded experience. Recommend.
As an Indian it felt strange and frustrating listening to them romanticise colonisation and forced conversions.
One of the favorites, such a good reread! I missed this joy of unhurried rereading, when one already knows the story so well, there is no need to devour- only to savor.
I wanted to read this for a long time. But, once again another Bronte sister book I wouldn‘t say was a great love story. Both options for Jane were horrible. One only wanted a great worker and the other was manipulative. Mr.Rochester had some good qualities like actually loving Jane. I liked Jane‘s character a lot. She was strong and held to her principles. Also, the twist of fate, fortune and family was delightful. I enjoyed the book and ending.

Rochester has been keeping a pretty big secret that is inconveniently revealed on his wedding day to Jane.

I enjoyed this reread with the #pemberlittens a lot. As always, the chapter-a-day pace helped me notice details I would have missed otherwise, and I loved the daily posts and memes.
The book was darker than I remembered (esp. her childhood), and like other readers, I noticed more red flags about Rochester this time around. But he got his punishment and seemed to learn from it, so I'm okay with the ending.
Perhaps the most fun thing about reading this book #chapteraday for #pemberlittens was making the memes! ??
This was my first time reading this classic and my second book by a Brontë sister (the other one was Wuthering Heights). The sisters seem to have a taste for the supernatural and sick romance. The plot was well written, despite the love interests.

This was probably the fourth time I've tried to read this. I still didn't love it, but there were parts that I did love, and I'm pleased to have finished it. Doing a buddy read was super helpful and fun, even if this ultimately wasn't a favorite. #pemberlittens
Jane: I see that there are three types of men in the world: Abusive, Mansplaining, and Liar. Ooh, I pick Liar!
To be fair, while mansplaining doesn‘t sound as bad as lying to me, St. John is so egregious that Liar is actually a better choice.
And they all lived happily ever after, except St. John, who died happily ever after.

Chapter 37:
Reader, we‘re almost done….and so the lovers unite!
Rochestor is half blind and lost an arm. Probably a harsh thing to say but his suffering brought out the good in him. He mentions how he searched for Jane in vain, but the best part (for me at least) was when they perceived they could hear each other miles apart.
Flawed as they are, that‘s some type of love people only dream to have Definitely a wholesome chapter🥰

I have very different impressions than those of my first read,I'm shocked that I used to love Rochester so much that I was oblivious to all those red flags, although I have to confess that in the end I find him so funny that I nearly forgave him for everything again. I loved this book the first time I read it and my deeper understanding of how dark Jane's relationships are makes me like it even more. My admiration for Jane as a character and for⬇️
