After receiving a call from her friend Helen Corning, Nancy agrees to help solve a baffling mystery. Helen's Aunt Rosemary has been living with her mother at the old family mansion, and they have noticed many strange things. They have heard music, thumps, and creaking noises at night, and seen eerie shadows on the walls. Could the house be haunted? Just as soon as she hangs up the phone, a strange man visits Nancy's house to warn her and her father that they are in danger because of a case he is working on buying property for a railroad company. This warning leads Nancy and her father Carson to search for the missing Willie Wharton, a landowner, who can prove he signed away his land to the railroad and save the railroad from a lawsuit. Will Nancy be able to find the missing landowner and discover how these mysteries are related?"

I‘m still trying to catch up for the #NancyDrewBR & just finished book 2. I really enjoyed this one. It wasn‘t quite as cheesy as the last one & the stakes were higher as poor Mr. Drew goes missing. I like Helen & the old ladies & the setting of the old colonial house with hidden staircases & passages. I do find it funny how quickly Nancy is able to get every bad guy to bend to her will & confess. 😆 This was fun! 4⭐️

Librarybelle Yes! The hidden areas of the house were fun to read about! 1mo

Libby eBooks for the win 🏆 I am chasing the 50 category #AsheCoNCReadingChallenge2024 and these two are my latest scramble to check a few boxes. The left is meeting the Title With a Question Mark❓ and the Nancy Drew fits Book I Read As a Child. (I am pretty sure these have me blown past my Classics Club 50 in 5 🤣) Still need 2nd Person Point of View…

Some of these books are re-read so they are part of my nostalgic/happiness from my reading past which means my reaction is different. It was entertaining in general but some parts were repetitive, lose or not well connected 🤷🏽‍♀️But I still love Nancy Drew and I will continue with this series🥰3⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I have similar feelings. Rereading these one a month is about the right pace to keep them from feeling too gimmicky. But I have so many good memories of reading these growing up that I tend to gloss over the problems 😂 3mo

Loved the second book in the series. I felt like it had great tension and the audiobook is so good. My daughter and I had so much fun listening. The danger was real for Nancy and her dad as they solve a haunted house case.

Trying to catch up to the #NancyDrewBR group. I loved the side characters in this one, especially Miss Flora. The villain, Nathan Gomber, was a quintessential cartoon villain. I really expected him to say “I‘d have gotten away with it if it wasn‘t for that meddling girl”. 😂 The stakes are definitely higher in this one, with missing fathers and more physical danger. While I like Helen, I really want Bess and George, and I hope we get them soon.

Librarybelle 😂 That‘s so true about Nathan! 9mo

A fun Nancy Drew mystery. #2 in the Series. Much of the action took place in a large home built in the 18th Century, which I enjoyed. And one of the characters was a really sweet, but also spunky, old lady - loved her! And seriously, what‘s not to love about a book with a hidden staircase?! 😀

ND could cook an entire holiday dinner and change the oil on her blue convertible while kicking the keister out of the enemy with one hand behind her back AT THE SAME TIME. In #2, she is now on the case to find what's behind the ghost in her friend's relatives' mansion as well as where her father is who has been drugged and kidnapped. Are the two connected? Another fun read as I revisit my fave series from childhood. #NancyDrewBR @Librarybelle

Honestly, I think this would have been a pick if I hadn't kept getting distracted by the consistent misspellings of "kidnapped" and "kidnapping." ? So far, my biggest enjoyment from reading these books has been coming across words that don't see much use anymore, like "presently."

Librarybelle I thought the misspellings were just issues with the ebook text I had! That was distracting for sure! 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly Was it with a single “p”? I‘ve seen that so often in old books that I think it‘s legitimate, but it messes with my head! 11mo

I‘m really enjoying this trip down memory lane, even if I never read the original Nancy Drew books as a teen.

In this on a friend of Nancy asks for her help in looking into a “haunted” house. At the same time someone threatens her father. There were some scary moments in here.

I did a reread of this 2nd book in the Nancy Drew series for both #NancyDrewBR and #CloakandDaggerChristmas. It's a low pick for me. It was enjoyable, if a bit dark compared to others in the series, but the mystery was not all that compelling.

8. One last question - the food discussion! We read about some of the meals Nancy and company enjoy. I had to bring up Floating Island Dessert, which I had not heard of...anyone else?

Here's a recipe: https://cafejohnsonia.com/2012/07/julia-childs-floating-islands-recipe.html

Any other food/meals worth discussing? #NancyDrewBR

BarkingMadRead Some of the foods she mentions are so bizarre! 11mo
bookandbedandtea I stopped and looked up Floating Island dessert when I got there. So bizarre! Many of the meals mentioned struck me as being different from the way we eat today. 11mo
Read4life I was trying to think of how to describe them and bizarre definitely works. @BarkingMadRead 11mo
See All 20 Comments
Ruthiella Some of what they prepared was I think pretty common for the time. Chicken salad, etc. And possibly, the author(s) played it up because the books were first published during the Depression, when for many, plentiful food was hard to come by. I was also impressed with how both Nancy and Helen knew their way around the kitchen! 11mo
Pageturner1 the dishes seemed pretty elaborate to me for lunch. i‘m used to just a bologna sandwich or tuna. 11mo
Librarybelle Good point about the Depression, @Ruthiella ! And yes, impressive that they knew their way around the kitchen. @BarkingMadRead @bookandbedandtea @Read4life @Pageturner1 11mo
Pageturner1 the floating island i‘ve seen it is bizarre 11mo
jlhammar I was curious about that dessert - thanks for the link! I think I might need to make a pot of split pea soup after reading that drugstore food counter scene. 11mo
DebinHawaii Definitely fancy food & very much of the “ladies who lunch” time. I have this cookbook which is fun! Many of the recipes are named after the books or characters. I‘ve made a few recipes from it like these for my food blog: https://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2008/04/weekend-cooking-challenge-27-vintage... & https://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2010/11/books-treats-reviews-of-four-fun.htm... (edited) 11mo
DebinHawaii @jlhammar It made me crave split pea soup too! 😆 11mo
Deblovestoread I just learned about this dessert on a Bake Off holiday episode. 11mo
Roary47 I watched a YouTube(s) video on foods from different times. So wild what others would eat. 11mo
CogsOfEncouragement 1930- no fancy food. Only descriptions were things like “breakfast was nearly ready” and “after breakfast, Nancy continued her search”. Floretta was especially stressed and had trouble sleeping and eating. 11mo
kwmg40 I loved all the food descriptions in the 1959 edition! It seems like canned chicken soup was a staple in every cupboard. 11mo
Bren912 Haha! All the food descriptions made me giggle. Jello was a big staple as well!! And you had to eat your fruit first. 11mo
lauraisntwilder One of my favorite Christmas movies is "Desk Set" with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Hepburn's character serves floating island in one of the funniest scenes. It's definitely not something you hear about anymore! 11mo
mrp27 I‘ve heard of floating islands before. Very 50‘s style cooking. Even made me think of hospital food with toast and gelatin. 11mo
TheBookHippie I get this occasional email of 40s & 50s meal planning (since blogging days) and it always makes me smile this reminded me of that! 11mo
MariaW Never heard of this dessert before, it seems pretty fancy to me to have been a regular dessert. The posted article makes the preparation look not that easy as well. The chicken salad and the plot pea soup seem more likely to be proper daily dishes. 10mo

CogsOfEncouragement Years ago, my kids and I really enjoyed the 2007 “Nancy Drew” feature film with Emma Roberts. It is current day, she drives a little classic convertible, and wears stylish clothes with a preppy 60s vibe. 11mo

peanutnine @CogsOfEncouragement the Emma Roberts movie is the only adaptation I've seen. I don't really recall the plot but I remember enjoying it 11mo

6. What did you think of Nancy's process in solving both mysteries? Remember, she's 18 years old! What was your favorite part of the book? #NancyDrewBR

BarkingMadRead The way she thinks always blows my mind, compared to today‘s 18 year olds she‘s very mature! 11mo
catiewithac I liked when she was boating alone on the lake. Her independent spirit is what I admire most about the character. That was the only scary, dangerous part of the book: stranded alone in a lake! 11mo
AmandaBlaze She is very strong-willed and determined, especially for the time period. 11mo
See All 22 Comments
Read4life I agree with the other comments. She‘s mature, confident and really listens and observes. 11mo
dabbe I loved how she was able to pry information from some hard-assed people when even the police couldn‘t do it! 11mo
Ruthiella I think Nancy‘s courage and can-do attitude is what makes her so popular with kids when reading these books. She‘s a strong role model for girls too. 11mo
Pageturner1 she‘s mature for her age. she pays attention. i think people are caught off guard with her why they feel able to confide in her. 11mo
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella That's why I liked her so much as a child. She felt like a real role model. 11mo
jlhammar I was struck by how fearless and capable she is. 11mo
DebinHawaii She is very strong & mature for sure. I like how she thinks & what she notices about people. 11mo
Roary47 I agree with @BarkingMadRead compared to today‘s teens she is a marvel! (I work with teens as a teacher). I will say she is in character of being fearless like a teen. All of them think nothing can touch them, but the critical thinking Nancy has is amazing. I agree @Ruthiella she is a good model for girls too 11mo
CogsOfEncouragement 1930- Nancy is brave, determined, and clever. Telling of the times, the sheriff is not inclined to take Nancy seriously until she mentions who her father is. Only then does the sheriff listen and drive out to investigate Gombet. I was amused that the Turnbulls gave Nancy the urn as thank you. She put it on her mantle next to the old clock she received in book one. 11mo
AnneCecilie I agree with what everyone else have said. 11mo
kwmg40 She is very courageous, but chasing after criminals on her own doesn't always seem like a wise choice! 11mo
peanutnine @CogsOfEncouragement that unfortunately makes sense for the times. In the 1959 version all the police captains easily take her advice and follow her lead which I found pleasantly surprising. She certainly can earn respect through her actions and critical thinking 11mo
lauraisntwilder I think it's interesting how she relies on the police, but only for certain things. Any actual mystery solving is up to Nancy, but she trusts the police for protection, backup, and tracking people she's already determined are, as Mr. Wharton says, "bad actors." 11mo
CogsOfEncouragement @lauraisntwilder Just like every single female amateur sleuth after her. lol Even when they are dating the sheriff or married to the head detective! lol But I love all these type of books anyway! 11mo
mrp27 I like her independence, she doesn‘t wait around a lot for others to help her. 11mo
TheBookHippie She‘s so independent for the times and mature, however that was everyone. Times change raising children has changed. But I do love her spirit! 11mo
MariaW She is very self-confident and relies on her intuition what I really liked. Having read a lot of Agatha Christie novels I was surprised that the police did take everything she added to the case very seriously, normally women are smiled at and pushed towards the door politely. So this was a positive surprise. The question is if this happens only due to her last name? 10mo

5. In the 1959 edition, we get to know Helen Corning. What did you think of her character? In both editions, obviously the Turnbulls play a big role - what did you think of them?

Any other character standouts from the book? #NancyDrewBR

AmandaBlaze I liked them, especially the older Turnbulls. I had honestly forgotten about Helen. I remembered George and Bess. Helen‘s character doesn‘t seem as fleshed out compared to the others. 11mo
dabbe Totally agree with @AmandaBlaze. Being older doesn‘t necessarily mean wiser or stronger. And marrying so young! That‘s what‘s so admirable about Nancy; even when Ned does come along, she‘s not interested in marrying. 11mo
Ruthiella I didn‘t remember Helen at all from having read the first two books as kid. I only remember George and Bess. But I appreciate how Helen here is up to the challenge, same as Nancy. 11mo
See All 17 Comments
Bookwormjillk I liked them but they were way more interested in regular meals, bedtimes, and cleanliness than I would have been in their position! 11mo
Librarybelle @AmandaBlaze @dabbe @Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk I forgot about Helen, and I agree that her character does not seem as flushed out. 11mo
Pageturner1 i agree @Bookwormjillk. a lot different than my young days. 11mo
jlhammar I liked the Turnbulls. The impromptu costume party/dance was fun. 11mo
DebinHawaii I forgot about Helen too. Maybe when she gets married is when Bess & George come in. 11mo
Roary47 I was surprised that George and Bess were not with Nancy all the time like I remember from other books. I didn‘t even remember Helen. Honestly, in my mind I thought it was one of the other girls until you mentioned it here. 🫣😅 11mo
CogsOfEncouragement 1930- The Turnbull sisters were being terrorized and I understood why they would want to leave the house. Having things disappear from a locked room within a locked house is too much. Music playing and shouts from within their home would put anyone on edge. 11mo
kwmg40 Helen as a character didn't seem especially interesting to me, but I liked the older Turnbulls. 11mo
Bren912 There was a time in the book where Helen went back to sleep while Nancy was sleuthing. Otherwise she seems like a true friend. 🙃 11mo
peanutnine @dabbe I couldn't believe Helen was engaged after knowing Jim for such a short time and most of it long distance! I know times were different then but sheesh! 😳 @Bren912 @Bookwormjillk 😂 you're so right! Helen was more dedicated to sleeping then sleuthing 11mo
lauraisntwilder @Bookwormjillk Yes! Helen seemed interested in eating regularly, sleeping a lot, and changing clothes all the time. She does fall into a hole once though! 11mo
mrp27 Helen is a true sidekick, not much of a standout character but a likable friend for Nancy. 11mo
TheBookHippie I was eh… 🤷🏻‍♀️ 11mo
MariaW It stroke me strange that she was supposed to be three years older than Nancy, especially after she went to camp in the first novel. She clearly is a pretty superficial sidekick (which will be killed of eventually?). 10mo

4. Nancy's other mystery involves Helen Corning (again, the 1959 edition), and Helen's aunts and their haunted house. What did you think of this mystery? Any surprises to you?

For me, I was surprised by the somewhat sinister ploys of the “ghosts,“ such as the gorilla face in the window. One of my fears is someone looking at me through a window, so that was a suspenseful moment for me!

What did you think of the mystery's resolution? #NancyDrewBR

AmandaBlaze I didn‘t think Willie would be playing the part of the ghost. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks In the 1930 edition, the “ghost“ is also stealing small items. It did creep me out, that knowledge that someone/thing is in your house, listening to conversations and rummaging through your belongings. 11mo
Ruthiella Definitely creepy knowing a stranger has access to your house and you can‘t stop them! Nancy‘s sang froid in the face of this was remarkable. 11mo
See All 19 Comments
Bookwormjillk I was interested in how they were listening because wasn‘t sure what tech was available in 1959. Other than that the title once again gave a big piece of the mystery away. 11mo
Librarybelle @AmandaBlaze @TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk The title did give away a lot of the surprise! And @TheAromaofBooks , the ghost also stole little things in the 1959 edition, including food! 11mo
Pageturner1 creepy to have hidden doorways you don‘t know about. anyone could live with you and not know it. besides listening they could have been spying at inappropriate times. 11mo
Librarybelle @Pageturner1 I‘ve visited “behind the scenes” at the mansions in Newport, RI, and some of the secret passages are amazing! I bet they had some secret hideaways too to spy. 11mo
jlhammar Not really any surprises (maybe when I read this as a girl), but to know someone is there, spying on you, stealing from you—yikes! 11mo
DebinHawaii Yep, a spooky house with hidden passages & someone sneaking around is very creepy. For some reason the gorilla mask just made me laugh as it seemed to take away from the “ghost” aspect. 11mo
Roary47 I agree @Librarybelle the gorilla face in the window would have me nope the mystery in a hurry, but luckily Nancy is a lot tougher. I‘m with @TheAromaofBooks and @Ruthiella that is super creepy. While I don‘t recall the small things being taken not being able to talk freely and having to write plans down is unnerving if you live in that place. 11mo
CogsOfEncouragement 1930- This book seemed too intense for kids with Gombet threatening Nancy in her home, willing to starve or shoot Carson, having Carson tied up for a couple days, Nancy and the Turnbulls unsafe in a house that is completely locked but then dresses disappear from a bedroom closet, Nancy showing Turnbulls the passage instead of immediately getting help from the police put the women in great danger of Gombet. Maybe kids were built of tougher stuff! 11mo
AnneCecilie Very close to the end, I started to think about where this was going. There‘s a lot of scary things here with the face in the window, the sudden music, the hidden passages. For me at least. 11mo
kwmg40 I'll have to agree that some scenes did seem quite intense for the intended audience of this book. 11mo
Bren912 @Librarybelle I agree with you. I hate the thought of looking out a window and having a face looming and looking back at me 😳. I wonder what I would personally do I‘d I found a secret passageway in my home. If I had been threatened like Nancy I don‘t think I would be rushing into it, with or without a flashlight! 11mo
peanutnine @Bookwormjillk it was interesting that Nancy kept mentioning microphones possibly being used to listen in. I guess they were beginning to be used a lot for spying in the 50s. But it made more sense that it was secret passageways in the end 11mo
lauraisntwilder I liked that mystery better than the other, but I was surprised at how often the four women split up. How did Miss Flora end up alone so often? Finally, Rosemary sleeps on the couch in her mother's room, which she or Helen should've done from Day 1. 11mo
mrp27 This mystery was fun! I liked it better than her kidnapped father. 😂 11mo
TheBookHippie This book was far “scarier” than the first one. But still fun. 11mo
MariaW The notion of an old mansion with squeaking floor boards, a dark attic with old costumes and things moving around definitely made this storyline more interesting. I was as disappointed and pissed off as Nancy when she could not find any entrance to the hidden staircase (again clue given away in the title 🙈). 🤬 10mo

3. Carson Drew is in danger, and we immediately meet some unsavory characters associated with the land deal (at least in the 1959 edition...I did not read the 1930 edition!). This mystery is different between the two editions, so some of the elements vary, but thinking of your edition, what did you think of this mystery? Were you at all surprised with the resolution?

For me, the runaway construction equipment is a scary part! #NancyDrewBR

AmandaBlaze Not really, I figured Gomer was going to be behind it all early on. I did still find the action suspenseful, though. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks Oooo the 1930 edition didn't have runaway construction equipment! In the later book, does Nancy carry a gun with her the whole time? The fact that her dad loaned her a pistol that she then took with her on her adventures surprised me a bit. 11mo
dabbe I don‘t recall a gun in the later edition. Did she have one in the 30s edition? 11mo
See All 24 Comments
Ruthiella I found the convergence of the two mysteries being connected and having the same culprit highly coincidental! 😂 But it‘s a kids book, so my suspension of disbelief is lowered. @TheAromaofBooks Nancy was NOT packing in the 1959 version. 😳 11mo
Bookwormjillk No gun in this version! In 1959 she solved the mystery in between meals no weapons needed. Like others I figured it out early on. 11mo
Librarybelle @AmandaBlaze @TheAromaofBooks @dabbe @Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk I had an idea very early one where this was going - I wanted to yell at her to check the other house! 😂 11mo
dabbe I remember reading at one point where some glass fell on Nancy, and she was described as having blood and cuts, but then off she goes with Helen and no addressing her wounds. I was like, “Nancy, you're a bad-ass!“ 🤣 11mo
Librarybelle @dabbe Yes! When the chandelier fell on her and she was knocked out and cut up, but then was fine enough to continue the hunt for the ghost! 😂 11mo
dabbe @Librarybelle That's right! (been a while since I read it!) So, she was knocked out, too. But up and onward she goes! 🤣 11mo
Pageturner1 thought was weird the ceiling fell on Nancy and Helen but were able to go on like nothing happened. the one part of the crooked ear guy confessing to Nancy made him very weak. not good. 11mo
bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks I was really surprised by the gun too! 11mo
Librarybelle @Pageturner1 Yes - the guy confessing seemed not to fit with his persona. 11mo
jlhammar Wow, surprised to hear she carries a gun in the earlier version! 11mo
DebinHawaii Seriously? A gun?! That‘s pretty surprising! It seemed pretty clear that it was Gomer & Wharton helping him. @Librarybelle Hah! 🤣 I yelled at her too! The other house should have been checked much earlier! 11mo
Deblovestoread @librarybelle. Yes, it seemed pretty obvious that the empty home was the connection. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe @jlhammar @DebinHawaii - In fairness, she never actually USES the gun, not even to threaten someone, but she takes it with her and, more concerningly, sleeps with it under her pillow! 😂 I'm SO intrigued by some of the comments here - I think the two editions were WIDELY different. Helen isn't even really in the earlier edition at all. 11mo
Roary47 @dabbe I was impressed by Nancy in that moment too. “Girl, you good?” I want to be Nancy when I grow up. 🤩 11mo
CogsOfEncouragement 1930- Nancy is alone much of the time, in the dark, in houses that have no electricity. She has a flashlight for part, but the battery dies and then uses candles. Very tense. The title clues us into the answer to the mystery of course. Carson is captured by Gombet because he believes Nancy is in danger. I knew her dad survived, but Gombet was definitely willing to kill him. It was easy to know Gombet had overheard convos of the Turnbulls. 11mo
AnneCecilie I‘m generally bad as guessing in mystery books, but I did have a feeling of where this was going. 11mo
kwmg40 I didn't guess the details of the resolution but the story didn't really offer any surprises either. 11mo
lauraisntwilder There wasn't a gun in my version! I felt like everything wrapped up too quickly. Nancy spent a lot of time making lunch and not finding the secret passageway, then suddenly all the bad men confess and say they're very sorry, the end. 11mo
mrp27 Nope, no gun for my edition. Interesting differences between the two editions. It‘s not too wild a guess that the two mysteries tie in together and that Gomber was not a good guy. 11mo
MariaW It was clear that there must be a connection between the two cases the moment Nathan Gomber showed up on the front porch of Twin Elms. Did Nancy initially want to check the other house on the second day? The ghost must have confused her this much, she completely forgot. And the way the realtor changed his mind and gave her key seemed a bit unrealistic. (edited) 10mo
Librarybelle @MariaW I forgot about that! Nancy did seem intrigued by the second house initially but seemingly forgot about it. 10mo

2. In this book, Nancy has two mysteries to solve - the railroad/land issue that involves her father, and Helen's concerns regarding a haunted house. We'll look at both mysteries closer in a little bit, but first, think about the mysteries as presented in this book versus the mystery from last month's The Secret of the Old Clock. Were these mysteries more suspenseful? Less? More dangerous? More so-so? #NancyDrewBR

BarkingMadRead The dangerous elements in this one shocked me, they were definitely more scary for me, the danger felt more real 11mo
catiewithac I figured out the plot in the first chapter so this book was a major disappointment to me. 11mo
AmandaBlaze There definitely seemed like there was a lot more action in The Hidden Staircase. 11mo
See All 22 Comments
bookandbedandtea @BarkingMadRead I was also surprised by the danger and level of creepiness in this one. 11mo
Read4life Book 2 seemed faster paced to me but that could just be because there was more going on and it was a darker book. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks This one definitely felt threatening, especially when Nancy's father is kidnapped! 11mo
Ruthiella This one was definitely more suspenseful and threatening. In The Old Clock, she was helping some people in need and only when locked in the closet was she in any danger. The criminals were more ruthless in The Hidden Staircase. 11mo
Bookwormjillk Agree with you all- this one had a whole different feel 11mo
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @catiewithac @AmandaBlaze @bookandbedandtea @Read4life @TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk I thought this one was much creepier than the first one! It had a different feel to it. 11mo
Pageturner1 i could see how this might of been creepy in its day but did not seem that way in this time. but still i like the story. 11mo
Librarybelle @Pageturner1 True - tamer than today‘s stories. 11mo
jlhammar This one felt a bit more sinister, more action-packed. 11mo
DebinHawaii @TheAromaofBooks I agree, her father‘s kidnapping upped the threat level in this one! 11mo
Deblovestoread I agree this one was darker with literally scaring someone to illness to coerce them into something plus the kidnapping. 11mo
Roary47 I‘m with @BarkingMadRead and @AmandaBlaze and @bookandbedandtea That the danger level was higher. I felt this way because her dad was gone who for many is the person of security in the home. @Pageturner1 makes a good point it takes a lot to scare a person really just as we age too. This might be even scarier for a younger audience. 11mo
CogsOfEncouragement 1930- Nathan Gombet forcing his way into the Drew house when he knew Nancy was home alone was creepy to me from the start. He barged into her dad‘s study and started going thru papers. The room with stuffed and live birds was yuck. Gombet & his housekeeper were more ruthless than the bad guys in #1. The feeling of never being safe in the Turnbull house was tense. Carson was treated so horribly in this one. Nancy with a gun so much put me on edge. 11mo
AnneCecilie This one felt creepier, the faces in the window, the unexplained noises and statues that are suddenly there, and of course the kidnapping of Mr Drew 11mo
kwmg40 I agree with the others that this book felt much darker. 11mo
peanutnine This one definitely felt more sinister than the first but wow @CogsOfEncouragement it sounds like the story was tampered down from the original version 11mo
mrp27 This story definitely more thrilling and I liked the quicker pace. I also enjoy ghost stories so this one hit all the right notes for me. 11mo
TheBookHippie Much darker book. And sinister is the correct word for it. 11mo
MariaW The second novel felt undeniably more suspenseful to me because of the two cases to solve. It was not clear in the beginning that the two cases would become one eventually. If the rest of series improves one novel at a time I looking definitely forward to it. 😊 10mo

1. Here we go on our next Nancy Drew adventure! Tell us about the edition you read - was it the 1930 or the 1959 edition? A few of us read both editions to compare and contrast...please share your impressions!

For a brief synopsis of the differences between the editions, take a look at The Hidden Staircase section on this website: http://www.nancydrewsleuth.com/mysterystories.html

#NancyDrewBR

IndoorDame I definitely read the ‘59 edition. I‘m not sure I‘ve ever read the complete text of one of the originals, but I‘ve spent lots of time searching for the artwork from them online since it‘s my favorite! 11mo
bookandbedandtea I read both editions. The older one makes a lot of judgments about people based on their appearance and/ or economic status, which I found weird. It's also a little creepier and more dramatic. 11mo
AmandaBlaze I believe I read the 1959 edition as her car is just described as a convertible. 11mo
See All 19 Comments
TheAromaofBooks I have the 1930 edition of this one. Thank you for the link to the differences - it actually sounds like the stories were quite different! 11mo
dabbe I have both, but I only got around to reading the later edition. 11mo
Ruthiella 1959 edition which was the one I also read as a child. I only just became aware that the book were originally published in the 30s and were updated in the 50s. 11mo
Bookwormjillk I have 1959 11mo
Pageturner1 only read the 1959 version. 11mo
jlhammar 1959. Interesting to read about the differences! 11mo
DebinHawaii My library version seems to be a reprint the updated (1959) one. Very interesting to read about the differences! 11mo
Deblovestoread 1959…it‘s is interest to me as that is my birth year. 11mo
Roary47 I‘m pretty sure I read the 1959 version, but I‘m showing my yellow cover books with a 1987 copyright too. Did they just buy the rights? 11mo
CogsOfEncouragement I read 1930. Besides the stereotypes, the Turnbull sisters have no phone and no electricity. I found it an interesting time to have old houses around like that and yet Nancy is enjoying the freedom of driving her roadster which is such a modern convenience. At the end, Nancy goes into Nathan Gombet‘s kitchen to get her rescued father a glass of water. Nancy pumps the water into a glass. It made me think of Little House on the Prairie lol 11mo
Librarybelle @Roary47 The 1987 version uses the updated content of the 1959 version! 11mo
AnneCecilie I think I read the 1959 edition 11mo
kwmg40 I'd read the 1959 edition, but I did glance at the 1930 edition and it looks like there are a large number of differences. 11mo
mrp27 I read the 59 edition. I‘ve yet to read an original 30‘s edition. 11mo
TheBookHippie I read both, again. I prefer 1930 but after our next book I have to find one or switch to 1959 😂🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ 11mo
MariaW Better late than never: Even though I book the ebook from the same company of the first novel, it now seems to have switched from the 1930 version to the 1959 one. I did realize this thanks to the article posted for the last novel. The switch seems weird to me, but I cannot help it. We‘ll see what the next ebook will be. 🙈 10mo

#NancyDrewBR My library had this copy with the original text from 1930. It is interesting to see how some stereotypes were strongly upheld in the book, while others were turned on their head, like an 18 year old Nancy being as brave, capable, and undeterred as she is. Fun read.

Librarybelle Hooray!! 11mo

Still enjoying these reads for #NancyDrewBR. I liked this one a little more than The Secret of the Old Clock. Mainly because there was a potential haunted house. I‘m surprised how much action these novels have, considering the time frame they were written. 4.5 stars. 370 = Word Search.

#Rushathon #SeriesLove2023.

Finished last night for #NancyDrewBR It was fun to revisit this one as it has been decades. Nancy is on the case to solve the haunting of her friend‘s aunt & grandmother‘s house while getting involved when her father goes missing while working on a legal matter. I forgot that Ned Nickerson & Bess & George aren‘t in the first several books. Anyway, a good blast from the past. Looking forward to the discussion on 12/15.

I read these simultaneously and, other than the bare bones of the old house suddenly being haunted and the existence of the hidden stairs, the two stories are pretty different. The earlier version definitely has some problematic attitudes. 😬 Reading these as an adult I'm struck by how innocent and optimistic Nancy Drew's world is. Which is probably why I like them. 😊
