I found this one through my overdrive/ kindle. Meant to be suspenseful, a thriller? I got where the author was trying to go but.. problematic main character, she comes off as immature. Lots of lackluster reveals. I was annoyed by writing and style but did finish it. Barely.

When young lawyer Lily marries Ed, she's determined to make a fresh start. To leave the secrets of the past behind. But then she takes on her first murder case and meets Joe. A convicted murderer whom Lily is strangely drawn to. For whom she will soon be willing to risk almost anything. But Lily is not the only one with secrets. Her next-door neighbor Carla may be only nine, but she has already learned that secrets are powerful things.

EadieB That they can get her whatever she wants. When Lily finds Carla on her doorstep sixteen years later, a chain of events is set in motion that can end only one way.
I enjoyed the book, I found it hard to like it when the characters were not very likable. The author's research that autism was a mental illness instead of a developmental disorder was annoying.

EadieB Lots of secrets and lies, twists, turns and surprises in the end kept the pages turning for me. I'm looking forward to reading more of Jane Corey‘s books. (edited) 3y

Very hard to like the main character. Or any of the characters at that. A little girl that they had taken to as a child, come back into their lives years later as a beautiful young woman, with revenge on her mind.

AlisBookNookCorner This is on my TBR 😬 I keep hearing it isn't that good. 3y
APLitlife @AlisBookNookCorner, there was really no climax and I just didn‘t like any of the characters. No one to cheer for. 3y

This was full of unreliable narrators as well as twists and turns. Still, it wasn‘t my favorite psychological thriller. It was just so much lying and so much secret-keeping, and then some things that were left unresolved.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A good thriller with plenty of twists and turns. It took me a bit to get into it but once I did, I was hooked!! It is a story of Carla and the havoc she reeks in her own life and that of Lily and Ed.

A story of deception and love, it explores the boundaries of right and wrong, the morally gray areas we as humans sometimes find hard to define. While not being a romance, this tale brushes on numerous types of relationships that transpire between a man and a woman- both good and bad. The characters are well-developed. I feel like I know and understand them. The climax is amazing and it enhances and shifts the light that is shed on the story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐️⭐️/5 👎🏻
Where to start? Unreliable narrators; incorrect information about Autism being a mental illness, and people with ASD described as devious & violent. No clear plot. All over the place storyline. And the big “mystery” was the most anticlimactic thing in any book I‘ve ever read.

I won‘t be in a hurry to read more by this author. #myhusbandswife #janecorry

veritysalter So disappointing, I hate an unsatisfyingly thriller; but worse to have easy researches conditions inaccurately portrayed . Hope your next read is better. 4y
MoonWitch94 @veritysalter It is SO disappointing. I was excited to read it, too. Thank you 😊 I think I‘ll jump onto a different genre now. 4y

I really like this book...but I‘m really taking issue with the way High Functioning Autism is being portrayed. Being on the Autism Spectrum doesn‘t mean a person has mental health issues. ASD is a cognitive developmental disorder; NOT a mental health issue. Authors who don‘t research properly bother the hell out of me. 🤯😡🧐

TheBookHippie Same ...ugh.... people do your research !!! 4y
julesG Try to see it from the point of the character who said this. Did this character, not the author, do their research? The author might know this, but might have deliberately put these words in the mouth of the character. 4y
MoonWitch94 @TheBookHippie Seriously! Editors, too! 4y
MoonWitch94 @julesG I totally agree with you. But, multiple characters (and a medical professional who have this character his diagnosis) have all referred to ASD the same way: a mental health disorder. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ And this book is only a few years old, and takes place in the early 2000s, so it‘s not as if they wouldn‘t know. So in this case, I think it‘s just a lack of research. 4y
julesG Then you are right. 4y

This was an okay book for a debut novel. In the beginning of the story I loved the authors style and thought it was a fast read, but as the story continued I thought her style got sluggish and hard to keep up with. It had so many pieces that needed to be solved at the end I wondered how the author would tie it up at the end. Overall it was a good book for the group K read.

I'll mail.it out this week.

I picked this up straight after finishing 'Blood Sisters'. It was a good read, bits were predictable (like the affair between her husband and the sexy young Italian) but I really liked the way the author made you question your perspective and assumptions about 'whodunnit'. Fascinating storyline about the son with autism too. I liked how the female lead made a lot of mistakes - no clear-cut goodies and baddies, hard to say who was 'to blame' for ☠️

This story has great bones, but I found the telling somewhat convoluted and redundant. In my opinion the story was plodding and the characters less than compelling. I have never bailed on a book, but I came close several times on this one. I doubt that I will be reading any other efforts by this author.

rather_be_reading oh no!! i had heard great things on this one 5y
Come-read-with-me @rather_be_reading The premise of the story is really good. I feel like a traitor saying things that are less than positive. The book just didn‘t grab me. 😕 5y

Who likes continuously reading about how “fat” the main character is (it says shes a UK size 14, which is a US size 10/12...😑) so much that it spoils the book? If that‘s you, here‘s your new fave.
