Life, the Universe, and Everything
Life, the Universe, and Everything: The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy 3 | Douglas Adams
The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky above their heads--so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals stand between the white killer robots of Krikkit and their goal of total annihilation. They are Arthur Dent, a mild-mannered space and time traveler, who tries to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground and missing ; Ford Prefect, his best friend, who decides to go insane to see if he likes it ; Slartibartfast, the indomitable vice president of the Campaign for Real Time, who travels in a ship powered by irrational behavior; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-head honcho of the Universe ; and Trillian, the sexy space cadet who is torn between a persistent Thunder God and a very depressed Beeblebrox. How will it all end? Will it end? Only this stalwart crew knows as they try to avert "universal" Armageddon and save life as we know it--and don't know it.

I think this one was my favorite of the first three. The idea of time travel always gets me.

This might be where I bail. I just don‘t really care about Arthur Dent or any of his friends, regardless of what planet they are on.

A comfort re-read (or re-listen) for me. Appropriate for cricket season!
I do just love this series, I love the humour and the twists. It‘s so creative and never fails to make me happy.

I‘m a bit surprised by all the lukewarm reviews about Life, the Universe, and Everything. I think it‘s just as good as the first two. In fact, I may even like it more than The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

The plot is more convoluted than the first two, but plot has never been the main focus of The Hitchhikers Guide. It‘s zany, hilarious, philosophical, and just plain fun.

Martin Freeman narrates the Audible version and does great!

My last few audiobooks have been… weightier. Figured I‘d go with something light this time.

I‘ve noticed people saying this is the worst out of the bunch. Of course, a subpar Hitchhiker‘s Guide book is still better than a lot of stuff out there. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, I listened to the first two on Audible… I guess it‘s been a couple year now, and naturally have read all the books in a past life.

I always look forward to the wisdom of Douglas Adams.

Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect are enlisted by Slartibartfast to find a way to foil the plans of the Elders of Krikit to destroy the rest of the universe.

Some amusing parts, some such as the piling up of weird names get repetitive and tedious after a while, and pull it down to a so-so.

While this may not be the strongest of the “trilogy,” it contains some of my favourite, utterly absurd moments. The plot is a little weaker than in previous books, but I still love it.

I can't say if this was really succesful re-read but well. This had some fun moments.

Characters were great again and overall this had some hilarious moments! I still dislike the writing style, it makes me to really struggle and it takes away my pleasure for reading. I love the humor though. Plot was again weak, maybe weaker than the first two installments'.

Sadly, I can't say I cared much for this one. After the wacky tone set in the first two books, this one plods along at an excruciatingly slow pace, jumbled with lots of pointless set pieces that don't advance the plot. It felt like Adams was aiming for a more mainstream sf adventure, with the humor almost drained away. 3 🛸🛸🛸

Although I had a rocky relationship with the first third of this third book in a five book trilogy, the second and third thirds were smoother and less jarring. I still could have done without "bistromathics", but felt Arthur was well-handled, and his character somewhat developed beyond "clueless tea-deficient ape descendant". Trillian was underused, but less so than in the previous books. All in all, I didn't stray too far from interested: 4?

Faith and perseverance rewarded - after about 60 pages of feeling "meh", the story starts to coalesce into some sort of oxymoronic vague-coherence and I'm engaged in the following 40 pages. Half way through, so let's hope Adams stays on track for the remainder! ☹?☹

I read the trilogy back in the '80s, off the back of the radio and TV shows. Rereading them now, I'm reliving how much I loved Hitchhiker and Restaurant, and how LtUaE felt like shtick. Much of the joy of reading Adams is his subversion of the reader's expectation for how a sentence should end, based on how it started. Having got used to that again, I'm feeling a bit meh about this. I'll keep going, though, Adams deserves the benefit of the doubt.

In this 3rd Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book, Trillian saves all of existence. Granted, she's not in it very much. The vast majority of this one is Arthur, Ford, and Slartibartfast hilariously failing to save existence over and over again.

Also an Italian bistro/starship! Arthur learns to fly! And an ill-fated bowl of petunias makes a surprising reappearance!

A blast to revisit! Martin Freeman does a fantastic job narrating on audio.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Dig that cover from the comic book adaptation. 6y

It‘s just that the bag into which I was putting the towel which is not mine is also not mine, though it is extraordinarily similar. Now personally I think that is extremely odd, especially as the bag was one I made myself on prehistoric Earth. These are also not my stones…I was making a collection of interesting stones and these are clearly very dull ones.” #QuotsyMay18
