The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding
The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding | Agatha Christie
An English country house at Christmas time, with its crackling log fires and fine food, may seem an incongruous setting for a crime -- but a sinister note left on his pillow tells Hercule Poirot everything is not as it seems. The great detective plays his cards close to his chest -- until the discovery of a young woman lying in the snow, a Kurdish knife in the centre of a crimson stain on her white wrap, spurs Poirot into revealing his hand. Seven cases in which Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple prove conclusively that their powers of detection take the cake

This is a fun little Poirot short (the actual book includes several other short stories, but they aren't particularly Christmasy, so I only read the title story this time around). Poirot reluctantly heads off to a country estate for an “old-fashioned Christmas“ - and a bit of undercover sleuthing. Poirot is very Poiroty in this one, and I quite enjoyed rereading it.

Thanks for the tag, @TheSpineView! 🥰

1. Hmm. Living in Phoenix my whole life, I wonder what I would pick ... 🤔 ... the absolute coldest wintry cabin high in the mountains of course! ❄️
2. I love winter mysteries usually at big estates, for some reason... like the short story I tagged with good ol' Hercule Poirot.

All are invited to play.

3✨ This was a very short Poirot mystery. The guests invited Poirot to their Christmas get together, but they staged a murder for his amusement. Or was it a real murder 🫣. Cute short read and mini mystery. It seems to just end though. #WinterGames #GingerbreadGems

I've been reading one Poirot a month in order and this one happened to fall for this month! It was a short story in which Poirot is asked to spend Christmas with a family in order to find a stolen jewel. This full-cast audio has music and sound effects and was very festive. The story was a bit predictable but I had fun listening to it play out

The promise of a traditional, English Christmas at a country manor house is just the thing to motivate Hercule Poirot to take on this Christmastime case. A young prince is in diplomatic hot water for lending a family jewel to a woman who seizes the opportunity to steal it. An international scandal is ready to break ... will Poirot be able to save the day, and the prince's reputation? Bonus: it's a short story!

📖 What books do you enjoy this time of year? Cozy, feel-good stories; ghost stories; murder mysteries; classics--all related to some kind of December holiday
📖 Do you have a preferred genre? mysteries
📖 Do you have a traditional read? A Christmas Carol
📖 What would you recommend? The tagged story, which can be enjoyed in one sitting. A total British Xmas!

Bk3 of my #BookHaul & the last Dame Agatha is another SE. An anthology of stories set around the festive season, mostly Poirot with an appearance by the fluffy old lady of crime, Miss Marple. Believe it or not, I don‘t think I‘ve actually read this one before, one of the few Dame Agatha‘s I have not. There‘s 4 more of the SE coming out by the end of the year, Autumn Chills, Dead Man‘s Folly & 2 of my faves Hallowe‘en Party & Five Little Pigs.

8/23 What I learnt from this book of short stories is that I prefer Christie‘s full length mysteries. Not because she isn‘t skillful in the short stories but because I get less time to guess what‘s happened! My favorite story was the last. Great for #192925 #1960 & #booked2023 #ashortstorycollection though.

LiteraryinPA I agree! I like the novel length best for her. 2y

It's been a few days since I caught up on reviews!! I was excited to get into this collection of Christie stories, but found myself somewhat let down because the title story has already been included, in a truncated form, in the Midwinter Murder collection, as had the second story, The Mystery of the Spanish Chest, which was the Baghdad Chest in Midwinter Murder, and was narrated by Hastings rather than in 3rd person as it was here. The other ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) stories were good, as usual, but not remotely Christmasy or even wintery. So still a pick for the collection because they were all quite good, but a bit disappointing just because they were not all new stories. I really wish that these special editions would focus on actual full-length novels instead of collections of short stories. These stories were originally printed together by Christie, but the other special editions are shorts ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) that HC has put together, which can lend itself to repetition. Considering how many of Christie's novels exist, it seems like they could manage to print these beautiful editions without repeating themselves! 3y

LeahBergen Yes! I‘m reading it right now and was thinking, “Hmm… I know this story 🤔 Where did I read it?” 3y
Jadams89 🎉👍🏻🎁 3y
TheAromaofBooks @LeahBergen - It was extra weird because the version of Christmas Pudding in this one was much longer and more fleshed-out than the version included in Midwinter Mysteries. The Chest story was also strange - in this version, Poirot is working with Miss Lemon & talking about how much Hastings would enjoy the mystery, while in the Midwinter version, Hastings is the one telling the story, with no Miss Lemon in sight! I was so confused! 😂 3y

Have I mentioned lately how much I love @LitsyEvents ?? I was able to find three December readathons this morning that I would have missed just by checking out their page!! It's so awesome to have this info in one place!!

@Patchshank is hosting this readathon for mysteries, ghost stories, horror, etc., and may also win the prize for best graphic because I freaking LOVE this! 😂 I actually have several Agatha Christie books on deck this ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) month, including the tagged book which is the latest special edition (soooo gorgeous!!!) that just came yesterday (and that I also forgot I had ordered and thus isn't actually on any of my lists LOL). Can't wait to see what else I find that fits for the #HolidayHorrorsReadathon !!! 3y

TheAromaofBooks @Yuki_Onna - Yes!!! I love when there are readathons that focus on different genres or ideas!!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Suet624 - I think several people are running it together, which is a great way to do something like that, as it's a lot of responsibility for one person!! There used to be another page (LitsyHappenings maybe?) that seemed to fade away, so I'm super stoked that there is a new place to find it all!! I don't always have time to scroll my whole feed, and especially this time of year there are so many challenges & readathons to join!! 3y

My first foray into the world of Agatha Christie which is weird because I devour mysteries, I can‘t think why I have never read her work before. I chose this one because of the season, it felt right to read about a Christmas pudding at Christmas time. I enjoyed the stories and particularly liked the character of Hercule Poirot who popped up in most of them. This was a hardcover crime series featuring the three books above.

My contribution to our Christmas meal is the trifle. No idea if it's in any way like a British trifle, and I've never met two people who made it the same way. This is the way my mom has always made it, bar the whipped cream from a can as I didn't think fresh cream would make it in this heat. It's a layer of Swiss roll slices covered by liquid jelly (Jello) mixed with sherry and left to set, covered by tinned mixed fruit, custard and cream.

MommyWantsToReadHerBook No, it's not the same with fresh fruit without a hideous amount of sugar 😊 7y
