The Book of Tea
The Book of Tea | Kakuzo Okakura
The Book of Tea by Okakura Kakuzo shows how Tea has affected nearly every aspect of Japanese culture, thought, and life. The book is accessible to Western audiences because, though Kakuzo was born and raised Japanese, he was trained from a young age to speak English. In this book he explains tea in the context of Zen and Taoism as well as the secular aspects of Tea and Japanese life. This book emphasizes how Teaism taught the Japanese many things; most importantly, simplicity. Kakuzo argues that this tea-induced simplicity affected Japanese art and architecture. A clear guide to living a simple and fulfilling life. Wilder Publications is a green publisher. All of our books are printed to order. This is an important book for understanding Japanese culture and aestheticism. The writing feels dated but I really enjoyed the translator‘s foreword and afterward. 🍵 🇯🇵

Okakura uses tea, a drink partaken of in both East and West, as a way of demystifying Japanese culture and challenging Orientalism in Europe and America. Written in English for a Western audience, it is a wonderfully poetic introduction to Japanese culture and aesthetics.

The roji, the garden path which leads to...the tea-room, signified the first stage of meditation - the passage into self-illumination. The roji was intended to break connection with the outside world, and to produce a fresh sensation conducive to the full enjoyment of aestheticism in the tea-room itself. 👇🏼

Bookwomble One who had trodden this garden path cannot fail to remember how his spirit, as he walked in the twilight of evergreens over the regular irregularities of the stepping stones, beneath which lay dried pine needles, and passed beside the moss-covered granite lanterns, became uplifted above ordinary thoughts. 5y

“Teaism is a cult founded on the adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday existence. It inculcates purity and harmony, the mystery of mutual charity, the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life.”

This is not book related but it is TEA related, which is very Book-adjacent.

I‘ve been rationing my Cream Earl Grey for months now because it seems to have disappeared from my local shop and their website!

Can anyone recommend a good Cream Earl Grey, preferably within the USA?

This is my daily tea and I am a creature of deep habit.

#tea #tealovers #autismproblems

mreads Adagio has excellent teas, I'm not an earl grey fan so I can't recommend a specific one but they have 2-3$ samples and you can make your own custom blend . Good luck 6y
SkeletonKey @mreads - I don‘t see a Cream Earl Grey but I do see several other kinds I‘d like to try. I‘ll keep investigating their site. Thanks! 6y

Putting together my (hopefully realistic) stack for this weekend‘s #24in48 readathon! I‘m halfway through The Book of Tea, so that will definitely be my first book. I also have two audiobooks lined up: The Nature Fix by Florence Williams and In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park. Who else is readathon-ing this weekend?

readtheworld @SledgeReader The great thing about the #24in48 readathon is that you can still get a full night‘s sleep — you try to read 24 hours total over the course of Saturday and Sunday. So you can do 12 hours each day and still be well-rested. I also find that 24in48 weekends are some of the most relaxing ones I have, since I purposefully decline any other plans if I can! 6y

There is a subtle charm in the taste of tea which makes it irresistible and capable of idealisation. Western humorists were not slow to mingle the fragrance of their thought with its aroma. It has not the arrogance of wine, the self-consciousness of coffee, nor the simpering innocence of cocoa.

1. Loose!
2. Caffeinated if actual tea. Herbals and rooibos okay though.
3. Anything with almond and/or chocolate. Ooh, and blueberry. Other fruits also okay. For non-flavored tea, oolongs are my favorite. Also lapsang souchong.
4. Ginger. Anise. Blech. Which means no chai. 😝

ETA: Apparently there's a #muglove swap which I completely missed. Shame because I would have loved to join!

Cathythoughts Don‘t drink much tea but yes to 4 👍👍 7y
Billypar #1 for me. Same answer for coffee ☕🍵🚫🍶 7y
DuckOfDoom 1 or 2 😊 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m a 1....Earl Grey Black! 😉 7y
Tamra #1 - even as I type this! 7y
julesG 3 or 4 if it's regular black. If it's some fancy pants scented black tea then 1. My daughter is a 6, loads of milk, some sugar and only a little tea - she's 7 years, so it's okay. 7y
Simona Black or green (usually black), between 3 and 4. 7y
xicanti 1 if it's black tea to begin with. Most of the teas I drink end up paler than that, though, because they're different blends. Whenever I make tea for my mum, she wants it at 6--super weak, with a good glug of milk. 7y
minkyb For me...I drink only black tea with caffeine. But it must have milk. If it is whole milk 4 or 5 is fine. If I indulge with cream then 6 is my guilty pleasure. No sugar needed. By the way, I love this question since I do not drink coffee. 7y
catsuit_mango 1. I don't put anything in my tea except in case of real distress when I need a nice cup of tea and then it's the English version with milk and sugar. It helps with anything. 7y
Seekingtardis 3 for me. I like ginger teas and light flavors with a small amount of honey. 7y
quietlycuriouskate Proper tea *has* to look like 4. What in the name of holy kittens is 6? Did a mug of Horlicks get included in the ID parade for some reason? 7y
DGRachel I drink coffee at a 4, maybe 5, but tea? Tea needs to be a 1. I've never put anything other than sugar or honey in tea. 7y
TK-421 Usually 3 or 4 for a black breakfast blend these days (without sugar or honey because I'm trying to control my sugar intake), but really, almost anywhere on this spectrum from 1-5 is OK with me depending on the tea. Some teas would be terrible with milk (I NEVER use milk with white or green teas!), while some black teas just scream for it. I tend to use milk more often as it gets colder outside. I think it's a comfort thing. 7y
Andrew65 I'd be a 4 too. Can drink black tea but only if run out of milk. 7y
TrishB 2 or 3 for me 😀 7y
LeahBergen 1 for me. 😬 I like sugar in a plain black (Assam, Ceylon, Pekoe) tea. For green, oolong, white or fruit teas I like them straight up. 👍🏻 7y
Avanders 4... maybe 3... but for black teas. For herbal, I drink it “Black” (heh), maybe with a little sugar, and for the greens and rooibos and whites, it just depends on the tea. 7y

Awards season is getting underway, with nominations open for the Hugos, the World Fantasy Awards and the Vogels. And submissions are now open for Problem Daughters, an SFF anthology on intersectional diversity.

A very interesting book on the history and key fundamentals of the philosophy of Teaism. The author also makes a point of sharing their opinion on the Westerners of history who stole the notion of Teaism, and culturally appropriated it, and how it made the Japanese people who practised these ideologies feel about having their beliefs usurped like that. Probably not good for sensitive readers.

"The first cup moistens my lips and throat, the second cup breaks my loneliness,... The fourth cup raises a slight perspiration, - all the wrong of life passes away through my pores. At the fifth cup I am purified; the sixth cup calls me to the realm of immortals. The seventh cup - ah, but I could take no more! I only feel the breath of cool wind that rises in my sleeves."

Tea party in #novemberland The Book of Tea is nonfiction booklet about influence of the tea ceremony in Japanese culture and Green Tea by Sheridan Le Fanu is ghost story.
It's pretty cold here where I'm living so my #MadHaattersteaparty contains Winter Harmony tea (apple, orange, cinnamon and cardamom) and Cinnamon stars (I would like to say - homemade, but they aren't). Tea party to warm me up on cold, foggy day.

My_novel_obsession Beautiful picture....makes me want to sit down and join you, drink tea and talk about books! 8y
