This is an important book for understanding Japanese culture and aestheticism. The writing feels dated but I really enjoyed the translator‘s foreword and afterward. 🍵 🇯🇵

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 84

Satan‘s Little Book Coven had our Xmas in July last night. It was a great success. Dinner then drinks at a cocktail bar followed by Karaoke. Who knew I love to sing in public. Tagged book is the one I received in our gift swap.
Okakura uses tea, a drink partaken of in both East and West, as a way of demystifying Japanese culture and challenging Orientalism in Europe and America. Written in English for a Western audience, it is a wonderfully poetic introduction to Japanese culture and aesthetics.
"Though I cannot flee
from the world of corruption,
I can prepare tea
with water from a mountain stream
and put my heart to rest."
- Ueda Akinari, 1762
The roji, the garden path which leads to...the tea-room, signified the first stage of meditation - the passage into self-illumination. The roji was intended to break connection with the outside world, and to produce a fresh sensation conducive to the full enjoyment of aestheticism in the tea-room itself. 👇🏼
"Let us have a sip of tea. The afternoon glow is brightening the bamboos, the fountains are bubbling with delight, the soughing of the pines is heard in our kettle. Let us dream of evanescence, and linger in the beautiful foolishness of things."
“Teaism is a cult founded on the adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday existence. It inculcates purity and harmony, the mystery of mutual charity, the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life.”
Next up, staying with a Japanese vibe, and a book on a subject close to my heart 💗 Kettle's on... fancy a brew ?🍵
There is nothing better than a hot cup of tea and a good book!!! #bookandabeverage #gratefulreads @OriginalCyn620 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
Is there anything better than being able to #SitDown with a nice cup of tea and a good book?

Are you a Tea or coffee drinker?
A short read which helped illuminate Japanese culture a little bit more for me.
#litsyatoz #lettero
completed my read for #nonfiction2019 #anothercountry . This little book (133 pages) was written in 1905 by a Japanese philosopher, exploring the Japanese relationship with tea. There are some wonderful passages to be savored slowly while sipping your tea of course!☕️
Jumping on the #nonfiction2019 band wagon.
This book was definitely one that opened my eyes a little bit more to Japanese culture.

This is not book related but it is TEA related, which is very Book-adjacent.
I‘ve been rationing my Cream Earl Grey for months now because it seems to have disappeared from my local shop and their website!
Can anyone recommend a good Cream Earl Grey, preferably within the USA?
This is my daily tea and I am a creature of deep habit.

Quite happy with the reading that I have done on this trip. This is one of the last books that I packed for it. 😁
I've never had any of these, but they sound delightful! I like several of The Republic of Tea's offerings.

My reading spot this morning (and every morning!) I started In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park on audio while making my tea, but now I‘ve switched back to the very apropos The Book of Tea in print.

Putting together my (hopefully realistic) stack for this weekend‘s #24in48 readathon! I‘m halfway through The Book of Tea, so that will definitely be my first book. I also have two audiobooks lined up: The Nature Fix by Florence Williams and In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park. Who else is readathon-ing this weekend?

How beautiful is this edition of The Book of Tea?

I was tempted after seeing @ju.ca.no 's post on Penguin Little Black Classics. They are adorable, really! 😀
Love this historical and cultural look into tea!!! So good. It's a short book/long essay. Read my full review at https://bookishliaisons.wixsite.com/bookishliaisons/single-post/2018/05/05/Tea
There is a subtle charm in the taste of tea which makes it irresistible and capable of idealisation. Western humorists were not slow to mingle the fragrance of their thought with its aroma. It has not the arrogance of wine, the self-consciousness of coffee, nor the simpering innocence of cocoa.
1. Loose!
2. Caffeinated if actual tea. Herbals and rooibos okay though.
3. Anything with almond and/or chocolate. Ooh, and blueberry. Other fruits also okay. For non-flavored tea, oolongs are my favorite. Also lapsang souchong.
4. Ginger. Anise. Blech. Which means no chai. 😝
ETA: Apparently there's a #muglove swap which I completely missed. Shame because I would have loved to join!
Discuss.... I'll start in the comments 😋 #teadrinkersofLitsy

Teapot may have made a better prop ;))
Interesting insight into the ancient tradition of tea but I think background knowledge may helped me to better understand the observations in this book.
Poignant reminders about respecting nature (flowers)...
Let us dream of evanescence, and linger in the beautiful foolishness of things.
So, I apparently also have to buy books when I'm at a tea shop (see also: "I buy books in drugstores" post from the other day). ( @LauraBeth - I've discovered another way to #UndercoverBookBuy).
not book related but I am so happy that I actually found unicorn tea at the shop today that I just had to share it ?? @taza_de_te für den nächsten Schreibmarathon ?

A very interesting book on the history and key fundamentals of the philosophy of Teaism. The author also makes a point of sharing their opinion on the Westerners of history who stole the notion of Teaism, and culturally appropriated it, and how it made the Japanese people who practised these ideologies feel about having their beliefs usurped like that. Probably not good for sensitive readers.

"The first cup moistens my lips and throat, the second cup breaks my loneliness,... The fourth cup raises a slight perspiration, - all the wrong of life passes away through my pores. At the fifth cup I am purified; the sixth cup calls me to the realm of immortals. The seventh cup - ah, but I could take no more! I only feel the breath of cool wind that rises in my sleeves."

Tea party in #novemberland The Book of Tea is nonfiction booklet about influence of the tea ceremony in Japanese culture and Green Tea by Sheridan Le Fanu is ghost story.
It's pretty cold here where I'm living so my #MadHaattersteaparty contains Winter Harmony tea (apple, orange, cinnamon and cardamom) and Cinnamon stars (I would like to say - homemade, but they aren't). Tea party to warm me up on cold, foggy day.
