California: A Novel | Edan Lepucki
The highly acclaimed, instant New York Times bestseller that "shows the moment-by-moment reality of a painful possible future, the price we may have to pay for our passionate devotion to all of the wrong things." --Sarah Stone, San Francisco Chronicle The world Cal and Frida have always known is gone, and they've left the crumbling city of Los Angeles far behind them. They now live in a shack in the wilderness, working side-by-side to make their days tolerable in the face of hardship and isolation. Mourning a past they can't reclaim, they seek solace in each other. But the tentative existence they've built for themselves is thrown into doubt when Frida finds out she's pregnant. Terrified of the unknown and unsure of their ability to raise a child alone, Cal and Frida set out for the nearest settlement, a guarded and paranoid community with dark secrets. These people can offer them security, but Cal and Frida soon realize this community poses dangers of its own. In this unfamiliar world, where everything and everyone can be perceived as a threat, the couple must quickly decide whom to trust.A gripping and provocative debut novel by a stunning new talent, California imagines a frighteningly realistic near future, in which clashes between mankind's dark nature and deep-seated resilience force us to question how far we will go to protect the ones we love.

Well, I‘m kinda glad 4 got rolled again because I didn‘t get to either this month, but California and Freshwater are very enticing on the print side. It‘s the first time in awhile all three audiobooks are nonfiction, so hopefully I‘m in the mood for that. #roll100

Dystopian novel set in what was California in the near future after the collapse of society as we know it. Frida & Cal have left L.A. and try to make a life on their own.

I liked the premise, but I wasn't too fond of the ending. I wanted more.

In this near future story, society has been steadily breaking down and now has a semi-post-apocalyptic situation going on. Amidst that, married couple Frida and Cal are working to survive on their own. As things start to change for them, their pasts are stirred up. This made me think of The Walking Dead (the show) without the zombies, like a study of human psychology in survival situations. A slow burn, but I liked it.

📚California by Edan Lepucki - Post-apocalyptic novel set in California that examines how such an event affects relationships (and I highly recommend). What I remember most is reading about the characters' survival. Also, that it would take a post-apocalyptic event to make me sleep in a tent.

A post-apocalyptic/dystopian novel about life in the not-too-distant future after the world has slowly sunk into decay due to global climate changes, weather catastrophes, economic collapse, etc. The story follows the survivalist existence of a young couple who abandon the collapsed city of Los Angeles and connect with a larger group of survivors in a fortified encampment. I wanted to like this book, but it felt like something was missing.

I rad this recently on kindle. The beginning of the story was promising, but I felt it got a bit predictable and slow towards the end. It's not a bad read, and if you're a fan of dystopia then it might be right up your alley.

Listening to this post-apocalyptic novel and marveling at how authors come up with such bizarre yet intriguing plots and subject matter. How do their brains work? Do you read some material and wonder "how in the hell do they come up with this?"

This is why I am not an author, but will always be a reader.

Today's NorCal weather is kind of perfect actually (sorry). A second clear sunshiney day and it's currently 10am (7C/44F). We are due for a big storm this weekend but I'm from Southeast Asia where thunderstorms and monsoon rains are regular so we will see! But I'm just happy for any sort of rain!

(Btw I've not read this book. Is it any good?)

TrishTheBibliophile I miss CA! Born and raised there but alas, I guess I am a Floridian now 😬 Only by definition though! 8y
DHill The best I can hope for in IA today is a ridiculous -19. What??? ❄️❄️❄️ 8y
night_shift Haven't read the book, but it sounds interesting! It's 20° right now in OR, but no snow just crazy wind making it feel even colder :( 8y

DreesReads We were up in NorCal all last week visiting parents and in-laws, and the weather was perfect, though my SoCal high schooler thought it was "cold" lol. I love that touch of chill we rarely get in SoCal. Also, 45 degrees and overcast is my favorite running weather. I only get it over winter break! As to the book--very good until it fell apart (for me) at the end. 8y
Serotonin @UnidragonFrag You're in OR? I'm over in Tigard and it's quite cold! When I dropped the kid off at school it was 19°, brr!!! 8y
night_shift @Serotonin yeah! I'm in the gorge so the wind is just battering us. Weather app says 24° but it feels more and 5° 😂 8y
Handmade_Redhead Being a nor cal girl myself, i wouldn't call it perfect. 12:30 and only 47 degrees. My toes are too cold for my sandals. 😉 8y
RealLifeReading @TrishTheBibliophile nice! Which part of CA? 8y
RealLifeReading @AudreyMorris hee hee. NorCal "cold". Funny enough when I was down in socal over Christmas (we drove down on dec 23) it was so windy and cold! 8y
DHill @RealLifeReading as if the -temps aren't enough we have the added bonus of windchill factor. Yikes! 8y
GlitteryOtters Oh man, I wish I had your weather today! Snow was blowing in my face & the windchill was around 0F/-18C when I had to walk half a mile each way to/from my bus stop for cardiology appointment, plus I had to walk an additional 1.5 miles to do some banking to maximize the $ I spent on my bus fare to the downtown area. Usually I like cold weather, but not today. I am so envious (and slightly missing my old hometown weather!) 8y
TrishTheBibliophile @RealLifeReading no where special. Central Cali - a little city called Madera right outside of Fresno! 8y

The post apocalyptic U.S. is the perfect playground for demagogic sociopaths who fancy themselves terrorists. Misogyny is alive and well, as is racism, even though there is only one POC left and no one who isn't heterosexual. Emma Galvin's a great narrator but try Station Eleven instead.
