This book was left behind by one of my daughters when she moved out years ago, and it was the perfect choice for prompt 29 of #52bookclub24: “Published in a Year of the Dragon“. It was published in 1976 and, as the title suggests, it features dragons! I loved the story! Wish I had read it when I was young.

Next in the Pern novels is one of my favourites from the series. It introduces the fire lizards, a miniature species of dragon from which the original colonists bio engineered the dragons. Menolly is the youngest daughter of a SeaHolder with very parochial views who refuses to let her make music. While running away she comes across a queen Fire lizard & helps her save her eggs from Thread, impressing 9 in the process. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023
Yesterday I went to the Renaissance Faire for the first time since covid! It was glorious! 💕🦄 I was so happy to see my dragon vendor there, and I ended up getting two new dragons! 🐉 The purple one is Razzmatazz and the gold one is Malinalda! 😍 #dragonsoflitsy
I bought this heavily-stickered library discard copy at a library book sale on my honeymoon almost 8 years ago… and I wish I‘d read it sooner! This little 1970s YA fantasy is such a gem. It tackles traditions & gender roles and the effects of emotional abuse without being an “issues” novel—the themes are so naturally woven into the story. And, I mean: singing fire lizards (i.e. mini dragons). Loved this. Can‘t wait to read the rest of the trilogy.
Look who hatched today? My brand new baby dragon! 🐉💖 #dragonsoflitsy
I know this post is about three books technically, but I'm counting them as one! 😁 Coming in at Number Nine is the Harper Hall Trilogy, which is part of the Pern series! I have so much nostalgia for these books, as I read them when I was younger and they helped me develop a love of dragons! Menolly is such a fantastic protagonist as well! 😍🐉💕📚

Long before there was Game of Thrones, there was Anne McCaffrey‘s Dragonriders of Pern and Harper Hall series. When it was published in the seventies, the first book in the latter series — Dragonsong — was a shining example of what happens when girls and women come to the forefront of sci-fi and fantasy! On Episode 67 of my podcast, kidlit author Tui Sutherland joins me to share her infectious enthusiasm for Dragonsong. 🎼 Link to listen in bio!
My mom sent me an awesome shirt for my birthday (in our family, birthday lasts until the last present arrives. I‘ve had birthdays last years)!
Also, I need to see if the library has the tagged book. It‘s been over 20 years since I read the trilogy (yikes, how did that happen) and I think it‘s time for a reread.
⭐⭐⭐⭐(3.5 stars, really.)
I never read this as a kid, and that makes me a little sad. It's a very interesting story and world. My interest in the characters and plot grew as I progressed. I will have to find copies of the next two books, as I want to know how it all turns out. Will be passing this along to my 11 yr old as well. Though, I see it prompting a diacussion of psychological/emotional abuse.

I don't think it has ever taken me so long to read a book so short. Really, though, part of it has been a lack of both available time for and motivation to sit down and read much of anything. I wanted to have this finished today, but I hadn't even picked it up since last Thursday. This is a relatively quiet week, though, so I'm trying to focus and finish. It's not even that bad of a book, and I enjoy this short verses that begin each chapter.
For years my dad has been telling me I should read McCaffrey. I finally picked up a few of her books at a library sale last year. I've been trying to read this one and just couldn't get into it. I looked at the copyright page to see when it was written and saw this. This could be why I'm not getting engaged in the story as much as I should be. Now that I know why, maybe I can enjoy it more and pass it on to my 6th grader when I'm done. 😁
My real name would be ymrotS and my account is 01rebmun_ohw_.rD the hungry HOARDER OF STRAWBERRIES!!! 🍓 🍓 and to my left it would be Rhett because to the left of me is a child😂 and to the right of me it would be Audrey😂 RARHHRRRRERRR IM A DRAGON 🐉!!!!!!!!!!
Nerual the Nervous, Hoarder of Thai Green Curry and Cushions! 😄
(Nervous because I have my very first meeting at the school to meet Max's nursery school teachers ready for September! Where have 3 years gone??)
Tt3kcoptoh the antsy, Hoarder of Neapolitan ice cream and blankets 😅😂❤️ @Eggs
#LitsyClassics #MayLovesClassics #day15 #Pet If I could have any pet from any book ever published, the fire lizards from Anne McCaffreys Pern series are the ones I‘d choose. Basically miniature dragons, they come in a variety of colours, are extremely intelligent & can teleport over great distances. The picture above is of Menolly from Dragonsong, after hiding in a cave from threadfall, she manages to help 9 firelizards hatch & imprints them all.
Thanks @CoffeeK8 for sharing this fun quiz. I‘d love to have a dragon as a fantasy sidekick! 🐉

Another great pick from @RachLovesTV for #freakyfriday! Was frustrating to see the struggles of being "just a girl", but loved Menolly!

Something about the word "scowled" .. I can always picture the expression. It's so visual.

I must have read this book at least 10 times as a tween, and I‘m happy to report it holds up over time! But oh my goodness how dated is this cover now?!
I remember being frustrated at the way that Menolly was treated, when I read this as a kid. As an adult, and with modern eyes, she was suffering both physical and mental abuse by her parents.
Has anyone read Anne McCaffrey?? A coworker is lending me some of her books and looking for some reviews.
I love Dragons. Like. Love love them. 😍 TINY SMAUG!
Hello to all those who have followed me back so far from my mass follow this morning! Nice to meet you all, looking forward to sharing books and getting to know you! 😊
#litsyislife
I think Anne McCaffrey writes the best dragons. The skies of Pern series is just timeless. But here's a random dragon illustration as I'm tackling not a mythical beast, but the equally daunting task of tidying the garden for fall
My super cute sister made this for me!
"I'm not a bookworm. I'm a book dragon."
Check that tiny dragon out. ??
I love finding notes, letters, and inscriptions in used books. This one, which a friend of mine came across, is particularly epic. And awkward. Epically awkward? #inscriptions #booknotes #foundinabook #awkward #dragonridersofpern #annemccafferey #whatsthestory #usedbooks

One of those gawky-girl-who-doesn't-realize-she's-actually-really-amazing type stories. It's good, but not the best of its kind. I enjoyed it, but not enough to scramble for the next in the series.
I may have gone a little nutty ordering from Book Depository in recent weeks, but the bookmarks they have been sending along have been great. Imogen finished colouring this one tonight - doesn't it look great?!
Hi, apparently when ALL THE THINGS are frustrating and my brain needs a break from reading (whaaaaat) I play SUPER outdated video games. And I suck at them. But gosh darn if my 10-year-old self is not determined to finally beat this 👊😂😭😂
#herebedragons (belatedly)! I loved this series as a teen but can't entirely recommend it as an adult. The basic idea is great, but there's so much about the world that either doesn't make sense or is really problematic and the later books written by her son are just awful. Last time I read Dragonsong, though, I cried. It's the story of Menolly, a girl who loves music but isn't allowed to make it, and the dragons that set her free. #photoadaynov16
Delayed #outofthisworld entry... I remember finding the late, great Anne McCaffrey in middle school and transitioning from straight fantasy to scifi/fantasy with this book. Also, that cover illustration! ❤️😍✨ #booktober
Day 23 my favorite female character is Menolly from Anne McCaffrey's Harper Hall of Pern series. McCaffrey wrote several strong female characters, but Menolly really spoke to my teenage self. I can't count how many times I reread this series. #favefemalecharacter #augustofpages
When (if) I ever finish the 1100 page Wise Man's Fear, I bought a bunch of Dragonriders of Pern books. Looking forward to checking them out!
Menolly is a strong girl, though Anne doesn't push the "strong female character" archetype on me as some other authors do. Menolly asks for help when she knows she needs it, whether from a man or a woman. Slow-paced, but that was part of the charm. Also the fire lizards are amazing creatures.
