The Yellow Dog
The Yellow Dog | Georges Simenon
6 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
The fifth book in the new Penguin Maigret series: Georges Simenon's gripping tale of small town suspicion and revenge, in Linda Asher's timeless translation. There was an exaggerated humility about her. Her cowed eyes, her way of gliding noiselessly about without bumping into things, of quivering nervously at the slightest word, were the very image of a scullery maid accustomed to hardship. And yet he sensed, beneath that image, glints of pride held firmly in check. She was anaemic. Her flat chest was not formed to rouse desire. Nevertheless, she was strangely appealing, perhaps because she seemed troubled, despondent, sickly. In the windswept seaside town of Concarneau, a local wine merchant is shot. In fact, someone is out to kill all the influential men and the entire town is soon sent into a state of panic. For Maigret, the answers lie with the pale, downtrodden waitress Emma, and a strange yellow dog lurking in the shadows... Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels in new translations. This novel has been published in a previous translation as A Face for a Clue. 'Compelling, remorseless, brilliant.' - John Gray 'One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories.' - The Guardian 'A supreme writer . . . unforgettable vividness.' - The Independent From the Trade Paperback edition.

Well, it's hardly the Hound of the Baskervilles, but the eponymous yellow dog of the story is considered a harbinger of ill fortune by the Breton townsfolk of Concarneau: a relative of the folkloric hellhounds of Britanno-Celtic legend.
Maigret is on one of his many secondments to Brittany, and also in one of his most quixotic moods, presenting himself as bumbling, unconcerned and obtuse, all the while unerringly closing in on his suspects 4⭐

Book 6 in the Maigret Series. Written almost 100 years ago and they were much shorter books, but I really do enjoy these books. #Classics

kwmg40 I'm enjoying the Maigret books too. I've been trying to read them in French. It's a bit challenging for me, especially when Simenon uses slang that was commonplace 90 years ago. 😅 1y
Andrew65 @kwmg40 Impressive! That would add an extra challenge 😳 1y

Mehso-so

This Maigret story about a series of frightening events in a French seaside town seemed slow and meandering to me, but everything did come together in a complex and surprising way at the end.

kwmg40 @Andrew65 Simenon wrote so many Maigret mysteries that I guess at least a few of them will be duds, but overall, I love the series. 2y

There is no way I would ever has guessed “whodunit” in this tale of secrets and lies. Superintendent Maigret‘s deductive powers, observational skills, and his uncanny ability to ferret out the truth, are a marvel.Because Maigret keeps his conclusions close to the vest,I was in a constant state of anticipation about the next steps in this intricate plot.

Dragon I used to read my grandma‘s mystery novels as a kid-Maigret - Travis McGee- Nero Wolfe ( Archie and his typewriter) etc …thanks for reminding me 💚🐉 2y
batsy I've always wanted to read the Maigret books but keep getting distracted by other books! Sounds like my cup of tea. 2y

I have not read a book of his in a long time. This library find has me going in circles; I really have no clue what is going on. Several unexplained murders in a small village totally changes its tone from one of friendliness and trust to one of fear and suspicion. #porchlife #Simenon

Overall, I enjoyed it, but I especially relished an atmospheric nighttime stakeout on a Concarneau rooftop when Maigret from his position observes across an alley two of his main suspects in silent interaction. It involves a chicken.
