A pretty tough book, not exactly a light read. It's an interesting world but I wasn't exactly mind-blown by it. 😔

I am kinda undone with myself because I DNF'd 1984. I was doing the audio for a bookclub (pairing with Newman's Julia) and then when I was unable to make bookclub I realized there were other things I wanted to read more than 84 for the fourth or fifth time. But still it is lingering in my mind so i will likely pick the audio back up!
A reread, almost 30-years to the day that I last read it for A-Level English Literature. Wanted to reread before Sandra Newman‘s retelling, Julia. I loved it then and I loved it again now. Can I feel another Orwell deep dive coming on?
"Tragedy, he perceived, belonged to the ancient time, to a time when there was still privacy, love, and friendship, and when the members of a family stood by one another without needing to know the reason."

The tagged, 1984 by Orwell. Where would the country be now since so much of what he predicted has come/is coming true. 😱
1984 was 40 years ago (doesn‘t seem like the future anymore), but Orwell‘s views are still relevant today, like AI, war-is-peace, and the thought police… “Two and two are four."
"Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once. You must try harder. It is not easy to become sane.”

"But by far the more important reason for the readjustment of the past is the need to safeguard the infallibility of the Party... It is also that no change of doctrine or political alignment can ever be admitted. For to change one's mind, or even one's policy, is a confession of weakness."

"We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power."

"Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right."

Thought provoking. Not an easy read, but worth reading. Orwell did a good job in drawing in the reader to the book. While it paints a bleak picture, there's a semblance of hope that slowly disappears.
The middle chapter is slightly tedious with "the book" parts, but does provide much social commentary and background. The last chapter is particularly tough to read, with there being a detailed description of Smith's torture.
Definitely recommend.
"The horrible thing about the Two Minute Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in."
-George Orwell, "1984"
"There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to."

Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the preset controls the past.
Reread 1984 so I was better prepared for Julia. Overall I am glad I did, I had forgotten much about the book, and it is interesting to read after reading Wifedom earlier this year and understanding what Orwell's wife gave him (this story idea came from a poem of hers).
The story is quite depressing but fully plausible. Coming out of WWII as he did seeing the 👇
My hopes for the rest of the month. I have had a bit of a slump lately, but I think once I push through the tagged I can pick back up my speed.

Without doubt I prefer the humour and the levity of Animal Farm. Somehow the corruption and torture seem less harrowing when committed by farm animals. Nevertheless, 1984 is quite an amazing book and the influence it has had on our thinking and our language is incredible. I hate the torture scenes - the rats, the description of Winston when he looks in the mirror and the betrayal of everything he believes. Orwell was bleak.
ive finally started this book after having it sit on my shelf for months and i cant wait to see how the story turns out. i remember seeing this book on a list of books you have to read in your life or something and id like to see what the hype is about. theres a lot of tricky vocab words tho. this is the first grammatically challenging book ive read so far. im slowly trying to edge my way out of YA novels so this is will be a really exciting read!

1984 is taking me longer than I had hoped, which is too bad, it is really interesting to reread it.
Loving Margo's Money Trouble, and am listening to Pansies, Alexis Hall is my go to feel good listen.
“ It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.“
I am re-reading this so that I feel more prepared to read Julia next week. I had completely forgotten how immersive and enthralling this book is. It is wasted on high school students who cannot appriciate it!

Ugh… I‘ve slogged through this long enough. I don‘t want to read this depressing book anymore. Done. DNF

Classics! I wanted to re-read 1984 before I tackle Julia, so getting it for Bookspin is great! #BookedInTime for May is Biblical Fiction, which is also great because I have fallen off my author of the year books reading Jose Saramago's Cain this month - and probably a couple of others by him as they are past BookSpins I didn't get to.
Excited to knock these books out!

I don‘t remember 1984 well enough to know how close to the original text this adaptation is. I do not listen to many full cast audiobooks and it was certainly entertaining. And short.
I was keen to listen as 1) it was free (editor‘s choice for April, and 2) Wifedom prompted me to revisit some of Orwell‘s work. I still feel as though I need to read the book though, now to both consider this adaptation and Wifedom.
What a difference 9 years makes. I first read this in 2015. Then again now in preparation for reading Julia. The world has changed and so has the impact of this book.

While part of me wishes I had read this sooner, it is utterly fascinating from a 2024/post-2016 lens and I think it thus resonated much more deeply than it would have otherwise. Overall, I thought it was fantastic, though the book within a book section disrupted the momentum; I wish that had been done in a different way.

There's a scene from Bones that I recently watched where she punches a men's rights activist after he says she should be muzzled, and it's super clunky, and so despite agreeing with the sentiment, I watched the scene fairly dispassionately. 1984 comes off much the same. I can agree with the warnings and find value in the message, but still come out of it without really caring what happens to Winston. Let's see if I feel the same about Julia.
This makes for heavy reading but it was always meant to be a warning - do we hear it?
DECEMBER 2023 … Favorites
I read 31 books … I say books but at least 7-8 were novellas or shorter! Slow reading month! I owe so so many reviews … 9 ARCs …. Ugh it‘s been a busy work month. Anyone else notice a lag in December?
These 16 books were great. 2 bios read by the authors… fantastik!!
Not my first time reading 1984 but it is the first time I listened to it. Simon Prebble does a fantastic reading; narrators like him make me love audiobooks. 1984 is one of my favorite novels, and personally, it‘s still one of the greatest ever written. But I did find a few bothersome things: I don‘t think Orwell had much respect for women. The third act is repetitive and opts for more tell over show. Still, I‘m amazed by how well this holds up.
This was definitely worth the reread. And I suggest having Simon Prebble read it to you.

Ok this wasn‘t as powerful or as profound this time around as it was when I read it in high school. Yes at the time this was written it was phenomenal but now it just felt a bit heavy handed. Scary stuff though!
