"In absolute governments the great nobles who are nearest to the throne flatter the passions of the sovereign, and voluntarily truckle to his caprices. But the mass of the nation does not degrade itself by servitude: it often submits from weakness, from habit, or from ignorance, and sometimes from loyalty."
-Alexis de Tocqueville, "Democracy in America"

Never was this book more prevalent than now. We need a new Woodward and Bernstein. 💙✊🏻💙

After laundry, we went to the beach and built a sand compound. It was mostly a nice day. The beaches in our city are not popular with the rest of SoCal. They like LA & OC. There aren‘t a big crowds here. Of course, that‘s probably because of parking. It doesn‘t exist here. In fact, I got a notice on my car that I was parked illegally. 😬

Not much reading going on but did manage to finish 2 books since the beginning of the month. All the lovely reviews of the tagged book were spot on and I really enjoyed Death of the Author for #CampLitsy.

@Read4life

I've always felt that counselling is a radical, political endeavour, rather than a "There, there, poppet" tea-and-sympathy stereotype, and the tagged book was a key text for me when I was a student counsellor.
I'm excited for the workshop detailed in the pic this afternoon at the conference I'm attending: The Person-Centred Approach: Is it Political? Does it Matter?

Bookwomble Not that I introduce party politics to my client work, but ignoring prevailing political contexts is an act of avoidance, at the least. 4d

The only thing I disliked about this book is that I'm very bad at paying attention to dates, so sometimes the passage of time between letters threw me for a loop, and the fact that it omits parts of the exchange had me convinced I'd missed something.

Otherwise, I thought it did really well at evoking character through letters. Poor Sybil.

I‘m not a big fan of the outrage style approach, but constitutional law expert and Supreme Court watcher Litman really knows her stuff. I love her podcast, Strict Scrutiny, and her book is very good, too. I learned a lot! Not all the pop culture references worked for me, but I do think it makes the book more accessible.
