Red Tent
Red Tent | Anita Diamant, Louis Ed. Diamant
Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood-the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers-Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah-the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that are to sustain her through a damaged youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate, immediate connection. Deeply affecting, "The Red Tent "combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of Biblical women's society.

This deserved all of the accolades and honors and awards it won. Beautiful book. Great story, fabulous writing, characters with some depth.
A retelling/twist on the Old Testament story of Jacob. It is not his story but that of his only daughter,Dinah. Told from her point of view and it is her life. I love the way Diamant takes this briefly mentioned in the Bible character and creates this entire life for her.
4.5⭐️ badass females all around.

This book had a slow start for me that I would have stopped if not an audiobook but I understand why the author set it up the way she did. I really appreciated the way sex, childbirth and menstruation were portrayed in this story. Since this book was originally recommended to me by my grandma when I was 15 I was surprised by the amount of sex talked about in the book, but nothing graphic. Soft pick because it did reel me in.

In the first chapter of this book I really thought I was going to toss it out the window, so many names, so much going on but I'm so glad I pushed though. Chapter two really pulled everything together for me and I found myself extremely invested in the story of these mighty mothers of Dinah.

I loved their battles but underlying sisterhood, their joyful rituals and traditions of their monthly cycles, their strength and determination.

MatchlessMarie I keep forgetting this is a movie. I have the book too and have yet to read it lol 3y
KathyWheeler I loved the book but haven‘t seen the movie. 3y

Michellesibs @NikkiM5 Same, it didn't pull itself together but I was so confused to start with. It might be easier for those who know more about these people from the religious books they appear in but I had no prior knowledge at all x 3y

🎧 Bible retelling from a female perspective? Sure. I‘m in.

The red tent is where women were sequestered “monthly”, when they gave birth, when sick. Dinah hears stories told by her 4 mothers & becomes a midwife/servant & mother. Told in 3 parts & spans 3 locations, Mesopotamia, Canaan, Egypt.

Good on its own but even more interesting taken as a criticism of the Bible & it‘s unequal treatment of men/women.

Definitely not my genre. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was good, though I didn't connect with it as much as some people have. I found the writing to be good, albeit a little sterile, and I had a had time getting emotionally invested in the story. The narration of the audiobook felt very 90s- the narrator had a good, kind of generic voice that I don't feel like embodied the character very well. All in all though, I'm glad I finally got to this one!

This was a reread for me. While I enjoyed it, it was not the blow-me-away good that I remembered. It could be that as a younger reader just started to question the Bible, I revelled more in the feminine / sacrilegious interpretation of the “word of God”.

I loved rereading this & appreciated the way the women support each other. There are so many moments in the Bible where the woman‘s story is glossed over. This doesn‘t claim to be biblically accurate, but it does give readers a glimpse into that time period.

“Why had no one told me that my body would become a battlefield, a sacrifice, a test? Why did I not know that birth is the pinnacle where women discover the courage to become mothers?”

What an interesting read! As a Bible reader, I found it fascinating how a few small chapters were drawn out (fictionally) in this novel to tell the story of Dinah, only daughter to Jacob and Leah. The red tent brought to life the struggles and irreplaceable bonds of women during this time period. Our book club is tackling it for our next read and I can‘t wait to discuss!

This book amazed me. I grew up learning bible stories of men from mostly men and the stories of women told through such skewed lenses. I was told so constantly about what my role as a christian woman needed to be from so early... i cant even remember the first time I heard it. This is the story of Dinah reimagined and told from her own perspective. so much love and lust and strong relationships between women. I loved every tale in this book.

The story of Dinah, Jacob's daughter. The only things that I remember about Jacob are that he was tricked into marrying the older sister and his youngest son was sold into slavery by his other sons. As it's been 30+ years since I've read Genesis, thought I should reread his story. So, The Red Tent made me read another book at the same time. ☺️ I can't praise this book highly enough. Fantastic! I ended up really liking this one! I wasn't sure if it would be confusing not having the Bible knowledge background, but most of the negative reviews I saw on Goodreads were from people familiar with the original stories.

It ultimately didn't really feel all that religious to me, and I really liked the kind of insight into what ancient women's lives might have been like.

The is one of my top five favorite books of all time, and this was probably the 7th or 8th time rereading it. Diamant has taken a barely mentioned biblical figure, Dinah daughter of Jacob, and brought her vividly to life on the page. Not only that, but she's illuminated the world of women in a complex and realistic way. I'm already looking forward to the next rereading. ⁣
