The Shadow of the Wind | Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Mehso-so

Wh- ummm, okay, I acknowledge that if I read this as a teenager I would have been devastated and thrilled and singing it's praises. As a cranky adult however ... I guess I'm honestly hesitant to recommend it to teenagers given some of the content, even if generally, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? salacious tragic love stories followed by more fortunate endings for a younger generation definitely appeal to bundles of hormones (apologies for the reductive description of an age group).
Yes, the writing is beautiful, and transports you to a certain span of time and place in history (political upheaval and corruption, lot of bullies and tyrants),
4d
Robotswithpersonality 3/? and suggests a grand mystery which as it turns out has little to do with books and a whole lot more to do with fucked up relationships.
For the most part it's about a lovely group of people getting yanked from pillar to post emotionally and physically for the sake of its impact on the reader.
4d
Robotswithpersonality 4/? The artful descriptions and cathartic, then kindly denouement does not quite make up for the extensive misery on the page, in my opinion.
There is a certain weight given to telling the origins of a young man, paralleling fathers (too many of which are abusive) and sons or daughters, looking back and back to the past, lost loved ones,
4d
Robotswithpersonality 5/6 I just wish Ruiz Zafon had not felt the need to go quite so melodramatic with the reveals, quite so dark with the bad things that happened.
If you like historical dramas with a strong mystery component, and don't mind it getting gritty, have at thee.
And no, no I will not be continuing in the series.
(edited) 4d
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 ⚠️Spousal abuse, child abuse, physical, verbal and sexual abuse, SA, homophobia, antisemitism, ableism, sexism, torture, incest, stillbirth, death in childbirth 4d

I loved the ending and the beginning, actually. It was a slow book and sometimes I wondered at the direction but it was always intriguing and beautifully written. I was very invested in all the characters and knowing their stories. There were mysteries upon mysteries. The author also took you to dark places, but the innocence of the main character grounded the narrative in hope. It had all the feels. Keep with it when it slows, it‘s worth it.

Nebklvr I love this book 3mo

#AudioCanning? Is that a thing?
At any rate, I got halfway through TSotW while putting up two boxes of apples. Chunky applesauce, cinnamon applesauce, apple slices in cinnamon-vanilla syrup, and apple rosemary jam.
Rereading this one for a book group, and I liked it a lot more this time around - the audio version, narrated by Jonathan Davis, is fabulous.

jlhammar Yum! And so pretty. 1y
Aimeesue @jlhammar I feel kind of bad about having to store it all downstairs (in “The Larder” as my ridiculous family calls it) until it‘s needed. 😋 1y
emz711 Oooo this is one of my favorite series and I never thought to do the audio for it. Is it good?! 1y
See All 6 Comments
Aimeesue @emz711 The audio is great! Davis does a spectacular job with all the voices. The only drawback for some people may be the weird music that plays at the beginning of some - but not all- chapters. Doesn‘t bother me, but YMMV. 1y

My all time favorite book. I just love it so much and the Cemetery of Forgotten Books is an amazing idea. The tradition is that when someone visits the cemetery for the first time, he or she must choose a book and adopt it, promising to always keep it alive. 1/5⭐ The two women in the first 10% of the book only exist in relation to their desirability to men, including the main character's obsession with a woman a decade older than him (he starts out at 10 years old). It makes a point out of the woman making sure not to be alone in the same room as him. It's weird and icky along with the general grittiness that authors employ to make themselves seem edgy. I'm not interested. #buzzwordathon

Daniel takes a book from the Cemetery of Lost Books and it changes the course of his life as he becomes dangerously fascinated by its author. Whilst I had to keep very focused to keep track of large cast of characters and the many threads of storylines, it certainly paid off as I became entirely immersed. There‘s a real mix of genres here; love story, thriller, mystery, a little fantasy, that makes it feel quite unique.

TrishB I remember loving this! Seems like a long time since I read it. 1y
JillR @trishb I think it came out 2004 or something like that. I‘d never heard of it, it was a random choice by my mum for my birthday, a good one as it turned out! 1y

📚 Shadow of the Wind
✍️ Jose Saramago
🍿Stardust
🎤 Sza (loving her new album)
🎶 Someone you loved (Lewis Capaldi)

Librariana I believe I have a book by Jose Saramago on my TBR! Are there any in particular you recommend? 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Librariana oh fun! Something to know about Saramago is that he disliked punctuation. Many do not like him because a sentence of his can be a page or 2 - which is how my brain works so I love it. My favorite is about Death who falls in love with a musician and stops working how how that affects the world. It is beautiful. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Librariana his most known I think is Blindness which is a bit dark (the for assault, rape, violence) but is such an interesting societal study - what would happen during a pandemic of blindness. A pandemic book before our current pandemic was imagined. 2y

Today has been a good day. I found a new stylist I can trust with my wild curls. The salon just happened to be next to the cutest, tiniest used bookstore I‘ve ever seen so of course I had to check it out and buy the first 3 books in this haul. And of course I had to stop on my way home and buy 2 more books at my usual spot. It‘s been a bit of an expensive day, but I don‘t regret any part of it.

I always have way too many books going at once. I like to have a literary fiction, a genre fiction and a nonfiction going at the same time. Maybe throw in a graphic novel or poetry book. Also, I get distracted by the shiny new thing, the library hold that comes in that I know others are waiting for. My favorite read year is tagged, The Shadow of the Wind. Gothic novel set in Barcelona during 50s wartime, rise of fascism, love of books.

1. 25-30 years in the past. If more recent my personal recollections would overshadow the book & it wouldn‘t feel ‘historical‘ enough.

2. This was tough! I avoid creepy, spooky books because I‘m a scardycat. I‘m so glad October is over! 😂. I could find none of my favorites set in the fall, but I think the tagged book fits. It‘s a bit gothic, a bit spooky and the atmosphere feels Novemberish

Wow. 5 star read. Barcelona, 1950s. Gothic meets historical fiction. Love letter to words, books and the power they hold. Story includes impacts of war and rise of fascism, its brutality towards writers, artists, queer, anyone supporting freedom of ideas and people. Young boy is allowed to choose one book out of a shop. He finds one written by a mysterious author. So many twists and turns I could not put the book down. One of my best 2022 reads.

This was my October #BookSpin and I loved it! A new favorite for me, both the book and the author. Not sure why I waited for so long to read it, it had to be good with such a rec from Stephen King: “One gorgeous read.” The story and characters were great, writing was awesome and there is so much love of books from the very first chapter that it had to be a great read! A pick!

I loved dialogies and characters were likable too. My favorit was Fermín, he was awesome!

This was perfect for the season: it rained often and it was so foggy all the time :D This wasn't easy book to read because this made me feel so sad: there were so many dying or being old.

I liked the story, this had a mystery that revealed itself slowly. This was interesting but at some point dragged a bit.
