Flying Too High
Flying Too High: Phryne Fisher's Murder Mysteries 2 | Kerry Greenwood
76 posts | 95 read | 40 to read
The second in the classic Phryne Fisher series from Kerry Greenwood, featuring the irresistible heroine Phryne. Whether she's foiling kidnappers, seducing beautiful young men, or simply deciding what to wear for dinner, Phryne handles everything with her inimitable panache and flair. Danger, excitement, and love-this is how the glamorous Phryne Fisher is determined to live her life in her second enticing adventure. Walking the wings of a Tiger Moth plane in full flight ought to be enough excitement for most people, but not Phryne Fisher, amateur detective and woman of mystery, as delectable as the finest chocolate and as sharp as razor blades. In this, the second Phryne Fisher mystery, the 1920s' most talented and glamorous detective flies even higher, handling a murder, a kidnapping and the usual array of beautiful young men with style and consummate ease-and all before it's time to adjourn to the Queenscliff Hotel for breakfast. Whether she's flying planes, clearing a friend of homicide charges, or saving a child from kidnapping, she handles everything with the same dash and elan with which she drives her red Hispano-Suiza.

Am on a Phryne Fisher kinda kick recently. This book is as entertaining as the first with more concentration on the mystery this time.
If there is a small quibble - there were a couple of characters named Jack.... couldn't the author have picked another name? 😅

My first finish for #marvellousmarch. The second Phryne Fisher book. It was fun and quick, although it did touch on some very serious topics. I adore Phryne and her spunk and look forward to more in the series.

Another reread, to cope with Brexit Day and other awfulness. Odd moment that struck me especially this time: Phryne perfectly understanding Bear and what he means to Candida.

I was browsing on BorrowBox the other day, just looking for something relatively short and easy so that I can #AudioWork, and came across this. Never heard of the author or character before, but Phryne Fisher is a kick-ass 1930s detective, and she flies aeroplanes, and that‘s good enough for me. In this one, she solves a kidnapping and a suspected murder. Think I‘ll track down some more of this series.

xicanti There‘s also a really fun TV show based off these books! It‘s called MISS FISHER‘S MURDER MYSTERIES. 5y

Charming and fun as expected from a Phryne book. I enjoyed that she was on multiple cases in this book and the way it switched back and forth between the two. Perfect for when you need a quick read!

#BookMail Pt2 The 2nd book in the Phryne Fisher series is about a kidnapped child & a rich old man who is found dead in suspicious circumstances. It‘s also the first mention of her abilities as a pilot, with the prime suspect for the old mans death running a flying school. These covers really are fabulous aren‘t they? #phryneappreciationclub

#ifeelfine reading by the pool. I finished this #whodunitbymail mystery today and really enjoyed my second Phryne Fisher mystery. I love these quick and fun adventures that are short and fast paced. This one involves a murder as well as a kidnapping and Phryne comes through solving both while getting help from her ladies maid and her friends that dabble in detective work.

How many sex scenes are appropriate in a book you‘ve given your mother in law in a moment of “I love this series and she‘s needs a distraction but the first book is a little all over the place so hey, the second?”...🤦🏻‍♀️ Honestly, it‘s a great book and the 2 intimate scenes are only just above fade to black territory but so not MIL gift appropriate 🤦🏻‍♀️ Read it, don‘t gift it. Also Puff who saw an eagle out the window ♥️😊 #catsofLitsy

benchley1 Unless she's very square, she wont care. You should see the book the old ladies ar my library check out. Woowooo 6y
CarolynM If she comments you can come over all innocent "What do you mean? Are you sure? I didn't get that impression..."? 6y
Pamwurtzler Ha I have a hard time thinking of books for my mil too. I love Phryne, but won‘t be sharing her with mom. 6y
See All 16 Comments
Zelma 😂 this is my current reality in that my mom has been pushing me to try the J.D. Robb series and finally pushed the first book in my hand. Just finished and am 😳 that my mother and I are reading the same sex scenes. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM unfortunately they are NOT that subtle 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Pamwurtzler 😂😂 I don‘t think there would have been a worse one in the series to be honest! Between the sculptor, the sculpture itself, the doctor, the sexual assaults and the child molestor... WTF WAS I THINKING (“it‘s about Melbourne and better than book 1” was literally about it & I hadn‘t re-read it in a while...🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️). @benchley1 ... still MIL appropriate? 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Zelma 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂 that‘s a HARD one! I suspect in my case MIL would be better about it than Mother but .... man alive & it makes it a rather awkward “Did you like the book” conversation doesn‘t it??? 6y
benchley1 @GlassAsDiamonds I give all kinds of books to my mom, I never think twice. I mean, she obviously has had sex...you could say these are quite good, but there is some sex, would it bother you? 6y
Pamwurtzler Haha yeah maybe she should have worked up to that one 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @benchley1 oh how I wish I‘d remembered enough of the content to have such a reasonable conversation at the time of gifting (it was a scramble as she headed interstate for her own mothers medical emergency but it‘s a good quality diverting book, that‘s for sure!) 😊😊😊 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Pamwurtzler and I specifically didn‘t give her Cocaine Blues!!!! 😂😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂😂 6y
Pamwurtzler 😀 6y
ladym30 Beautiful kitty!! 6y
Zelma @GlassAsDiamonds it‘s not that big a deal but I try to ignore the awkward feeling when reading. She keeps wanting to talk about them, and I am meanwhile avoiding the sexy factor. 😂 I am now leaving her house with the next 6 books. She is very happy about this. Thank goodness she didn‘t recommend 50 Shades. 6y
Nute Cool photo! 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Nute thanks!!! I‘m a fan of hers but I‘m told not necessarily everyone else needs to be...! 😊😊😊😊 5y

I'm a fan of the TV 📺 series. I adored Cocaine Blues. Even though I have the book, I listened to the audiobook. The reader is wonderful and changes between believable character voices seemingly with ease. However, this story just didn't grab my interest. I'm not done with Phryne though, and will read more of the series.

Bookquilter I am listening to this audiobook this week... I enjoyed the first one but I am struggling with this one. 7y

CarolynM If you enjoy this can I suggest you try Sulari Gentil's Rowland Sinclair series starting with A Few Right Thinking Men? Set in Sydney in the 30's they have the hero and his friends involved in real events of the times, as well as the fictional mysteries, and feature quite a few real historical figures as minor characters. They are good fun and IMO much better written than Phryne. 7y
