Neverwhere
Neverwhere | Neil Gaiman
The #1 New York Times bestselling author's ultimate edition of his wildly successful first novel featuring his "preferred text"and including his special Neverwhere tale "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back"Published in 1997, Neil Gaiman's darkly hypnotic first novel, Neverwhere, heralded the arrival of a major talent and became a touchstone of urban fantasy. Over the years, a number of versions were produced both in the U.S. and the U.K. Now Gaiman's preferred edition of his classic novel reconciles these works and reinstates a number of scenes cut from the original published books.Neverwhere is the story of Richard Mayhew, a young London businessman with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he discovers a girl bleeding on the sidewalk. He stops to help heran act of kindness that plunges him into a world he never dreamed existed.Slipping through the cracks of reality, Richard lands in the Neverwherea London of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth. The Neverwhere is home to Door, the mysterious girl Richard helped in the London Above. Door, a noblewoman whose family has been murdered, is on a quest to find the agent that slaughtered her family and thwart the destruction of this underworld kingdom. If Richard is ever to return to his former life, he must join the journey to save Door's worldand find a way to survive.A hallucinatory fantasia of mystery, mythology, and terror that "draws equally from George Lucas, Monty Python, Doctor Who, and John Milton" (USA Today), Neverwhere is an "Alice in Wonderland with a punk edge" (Poppy Z. Brite), "that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune).

Finally got around to reading this one, the story was brilliant and the illustrations furthered the immersion into the whirlwind of the story. This story is one of few that I immediately wish I could re-experience for the first time.

From the prologue: The night before he went to London, Richard Mayhew was not enjoying himself.

From Chapter One: She had been running for four days now, a harum-scarum tumbling flight through passages and tunnels.

"Whatchyouwant?" She asked Richard, suspiciously.
"Nothing," said Richard. "I really don't want anything. Nothing at all." And then he realized how true that was; and how dreadful a thing it had become. "Have you ever got everything you ever wanted? And then realized it wasn't what you wanted at all?"

This book spoke to something in my heart that has been trying to find its voice as I adjust to life back home after traveling around East Africa for a while...although I don't plan to follow in Richard's footsteps at the end, I miss my friends there dearly and I would definitely like to return...

One of those times where the blurb does not do the scope of the story justice. Neverwhere brought to life a world lived between the cracks and within the shadows. For once the heroes of our story are not wise nor particularly brave, but they are determined. I enjoyed discovering London Below and all its dangers.

Thank you @behudd for the recommendation! The audiobook was a fun time.

REALLY enjoyed this - interesting to discover this was originally a TV script that became a novel. I really like Gaiman‘s writing style, and his very British (and Pratchett -esque) humour! This got me a little further in #PromptMaze and I‘m including as a theme read for #TeamMonsterMash as definitely filled with nasty creatures! #Scarathlon

I liked it. It was fun to read. I guess I am looking for something to make me think about it long after reading. This is not it. No fault of its own. Except I was angry about Huntress. That fight scene was lame for someone of her prowess. A lifelong planned fight so quickly killed. And was it his fate to face the boar? I don‘t know. I get it. Made for show movie turned book. It was fun.

Working my way through Gaiman's novels. I enjoyed this one immensely.
I loved the world of London Below. Such a dark and gritty yet magical place. I liked seeing it all from Richard's perspective as an outsider, or 'upworlder'. He gets pulled into the world unwillingly and ends up tagging along with Door on her quest to avenge her family.

This was my first book by Gaiman and i really enjoyed his style. I would've loved to get to know more about London Below though, the world of the lost and forgotten, about how it came to be, how did things “fall through the cracks“. Maybe in the sequel...?
⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

starlight97 But I can't stop thinking, wasn't the Marquis's death irrelevant? He got the information he wanted about who killed Door's family, sure, and he managed to get back to them and he did save Richard from Lamia indeed but Door would've fooled Islington without the two of them there, right? 4y
starlight97 Or maybe Door, Croup and Vandemar might not have gotten to the end of the labyrinth without Hunter killing the Beast? But Hunter would've gone with them if the Marquis wasn't there... ugh. 4y

This was fun and I enjoyed it a sort of Alice in Wonderland for the modern age. Richard has a normal life until he gets entangled with a mysterious girl he comes across on the street. I liked the weird demi world of London below and found the bonus story of the Marquis and his coat to be the best part. I would definitely read more stories set in this world.
