The Cold Dish
The Cold Dish: A Longmire Mystery | Craig Johnson
Introducing Wyomings Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Any Other Name and Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for LONGMIRE, the hit drama series now on Netflix Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyomings Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, and full of memorable characters. After twenty-five years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmires hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle. With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I am making progress through my “debt“ spins and roll picks. Since my last post, I finished:
- the tagged book: a great read, looking forward to more Longmire: this was my November #BookSpin and my December #Roll20 pick #3;
- a shorter read that I enjoyed quite a lot: The Bookstore Sisters by Alice Hoffman: my December #Roll20 pick #4;
- Catherynne M. Valente's novella Comfort Me with Apples: my December #BookSpin.

#20series20days Day 15
Walt Longmire
Walt is the Sheriff of fictional Absaroka County in Wyoming where significant intrigue is the order of the day. I love that Walt is a truly decent human; also that he isn't some young, gorgeous stud. He's starting to feel his age but that doesn't stop him from giving his all to solve crimes. The supporting cast is wonderful (Henry Standing Bear 😍) and the harsh landscape has a starring role.
@Andrew65

Andrew65 I need a book for Wyoming so might give these a try. 4y

#wintergames #merryReaders #winterReadsBingo #whitecover I‘m so happy to have finally listened to this book 1 in the Walt Longmire series - it‘s got great characters and humor that had me laughing out loud. The audio narrator was George Guidall and he did an amazing job with all the character voices. Loved it! Ready to read more in the series!

KathyWheeler I had watched the tv show, which is good, before I read the books, so I was surprised at how funny the books are. The show is not anywhere near as funny. 5y

(Day 18 - #WhereHaveAllTheCowboysGone)

*Perhaps they‘ve gone to television heaven, after the characters from Craig Johnson‘s (pictured, center) Walt Longmire series was adapted for TV. The show, titled simply “Longmire,” began life on the A&E network, then moved to Netflix, where it was cancelled after season 6. Walt Longmire is my idea of the classic cowboy. There are 15 books in the mystery series. (Photos from Google Images) 🤠

My first thought for #coyote was the Longmire series by Craig Johnson. Set in Wyoming, Walt Longmire works to maintain law and order in his county. For those who are not familiar with Wyoming...it‘s one of the least populated states in the US, with coyotes and other wild animals roaming. This is the first in the series. #TimbitTunes

I watched the Longmire television series before I knew it was a series of mysteries, and also before I knew that the town where the novels are set is based on a northeastern Wyoming town I‘ve visited. I have long loved Walt Longmire as a television character. Now he‘s my favorite crime novel protagonist. This was the most fun I‘ve had with a mystery since I met Philip Marlowe, and I‘ll be seeking out the other 14 books in the series.

Another one I. The books for #24b4monday I enjoyed this book way more than I though I would. It‘s definitely a different genre than I typically read, set in Montana. It was rich with Cheyanne culture and history. A fast paced mystery that kept me guessing up until the very end. Filled with plot twists and beautiful imagery, this novel was definitely a pick for me. 22 hours and counting!

This book was okay - nothing exciting or riveting; at times I had to put it down & come back to it later. I‘m accustomed to faster moving plots ... this being the first book of this author I imagine he‘s evolved & grown so I may read more of his work. Part of the problem for me is that I‘m always trying to read books quickly before they‘re due back at the library & this kind of book doesn‘t like to be rushed. Now I‘m ready for the Netflix series!

Tamra I hope you like the Netflix series! 6y
Dragon I enjoyed the TV series, I hadn‘t realized their was a book series. Stacking. 6y
Tomigirl44 @Tamra @Dragon I‘ve watched the first 2 episodes so far - I‘m enjoying the series, although surprised that the plot the book portrays is the final episode of the first season not the pilot episode so I‘m still looking forward to the movie version of the book. And I like the actor who plays Longmire. 👍 6y

I read this book several years ago and am now listening to the audiobook through my library‘s digital library. The dialogue could be better sometimes, but the descriptions of the Wyoming terrain more than make up for it. I love murder mysteries, and Craig Johnson has done very well creating this county, its history, and the storylines. The Native American world interwoven into it was the biggest thing that drew me to this series.

This was a quick, fun read. I am spectacularly bad at guessing who the villain is in mysteries, and this one is no different. I love Walt and Henry's relationship, and how much Walt cares about his whole team. There's definitely some funny moments in there, too. As a fan of the show this was based on, the hardest part was letting go of what I know of the TV show characters, because the book characters are just different enough to be confusing.

Well I listened to this book on the basis of the TV show and that I got it cheap. Overall an good detective story which kept me guess until the end, set in an interesting location which adds another dimension to the story (Native American Culture, Reservation Politics etc). I found myself comparing the TV characters to the book, with some being accurate, but several being quite different;

Oblomov26 most noticeably the Walt of the book is I found a less likable character than the Walt of the TV series, more maudlin, more easily angered. 7y

I finished this book during the #24in48 readathon. The first in the mystery series featuring Sheriff Walt Longmire, this book takes readers to Wyoming. Prejudice, murder, crime and deceit all play a role in this. The setting is rough; the language at times is rough too. I liked this and will read more to see the characters develop. The former A&E and now Netflix show Longmire is based on this series.

Smrloomis I love the show! Have you seen it? I wonder if it's completely different from the books. 7y

The last panel I went to was The Old West Made New: Western Fiction Across the Centuries with Jeff Guinn, Bill Wittliff & Craig Johnson. I'm currently listening to the 3rd Longmire book so it was neat to hear Johnson talk about his books. The book festival made my TBR grow as I saw a number of unfamiliar authors. I don't know if I'm going to make it. I find Walt almost annoying but probably ok once you get to know him. He keeps oggling all the women in town but is clearly in love with his best friend Henry Standing Bear, and I have no clue what year it is or how old anyone is because he talks about Vietnam like it just happened. Also, he doesn't seem all that keen on solving the murder. Ploughing along...

Still struggling. Have to finish before the library's tractor beam takes the ebook back. Have resorted to ploughing through whether I know who said what. It should be enough that somebody said it, right?
