Misty of Chincoteague (Anniversary)
Misty of Chincoteague (Anniversary) | Marguerite Henry
56 posts | 88 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Nobody could capture the Phantom. She was the wildest mare on Assateague Island. They said she was like the wind, that the white "map" on her shoulders was her mark of freedom. Paul and Maureen Beebe had their hearts set on owning her. They were itching to buy and tame her, and worked hard to earn the money that she would cost. But the roundup men had tried to capture her and for two years she had escaped them.... Pony Penning Day holds a surprise for everyone, for Paul not only brings in the Phantom, but her newborn colt as well. Can Paul and Maureen possibly earn enough to buy them both?

It is a beautiful story, though some part felt sad. I am not a horse person, but I love to read about these beautiful creatures. I especially like the vivid geographical descriptions in the book and illustrations. Thank you for selecting this book for #childrensclassicread2024 @thebookhippie 😍 😻 😻

#ReadAway2024

Like many of the #ChildrensClassicRead2024 group, I wasn‘t a horse girlie & beyond Black Beauty, I didn‘t read horsey books as a child. My best friend in junior high had a horse & I did get to ride him. Still, I enjoyed this sweet & mostly fun story (OK, the Pony Penning Day made me sad). My friend did collect 🐎 figures & although the covers show Phantom as the same color as Misty the collector figures show her as black & white.🤔

Spent a lovely Saturday morning doing some laundry and baking while listening to this #childrensclassic2024 pick. It's a simple story but the writing has depth and nuance. Even the horses (Phantom and Misty) have excellent character development. I was never a horsey girl but I might have been had I read this when I was young. 🤎🐎 @TheBookHippie

One of my favorite books & authors from childhood. I always wanted to go to the pony round up. Now I‘m afraid to go because I might buy a pony! Now, as an adult I do question whether we really should be buying wild horses instead of letting them just roam…
I will always have a special place in my heart for Misty and Stormy, Misty‘s foal 🐴 🩷🐴

I reread this childhood favorite as I found it in my closet while cleaning. Based on the real real pony penning that takes place, it's a story of hope and believing from 2 children who do what adults couldn't. After my reread, I'm going to pass this old battered copy to my niece.

Day 28 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts - arguably Henry's most famous book, this story takes place on Chincoteague & Assateague, two islands off the coast of the Delmarva peninsula. It follows the tradition of Pony Penning Day, when wild ponies from Assateague are herded across the channel between the two islands and some of the foals are sold off, both to raise money for the island and keep the population of the horses under ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) control. Two children are determined to purchase a pony of their own, and this story is about their adventure of finding, claiming, and raising their own pony. I reread this book & its two sequels just a couple of years ago & couldn't believe how well they had aged. I absolutely loved every page & as always, Wesley Dennis's illustrations bring the story to life. The other books are far away on a different shelf so it will be a while ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) before I get to them, but I will say that when I reread them, I think Stormy was actually my favorite, despite being incredibly heartbreaking. What got me about that story was that it was based on a real-life storm that absolutely devastated the area in 1962. What is genuinely amazing to me is how, because of Henry's earlier books, so many people knew about these islands & cared about the people & horses there that when Stormy was ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) published less than a year after the storm struck, loads of people donated money to help with the reconstruction of Chincoteague & to purchase back ponies that had been sold over the years so that they could reestablish the herd - which had been almost completely wiped out in the storm - with the same bloodlines that had always lived there. It's just a beautiful story all around. All three books are definitely worth a read. 4y
See All 10 Comments
TheAromaofBooks As a side note, I published a review of Stormy when I read it in 2016, so if you are interested in more details about the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962, and how Henry's readers responded, feel free to check it out -https://thearomaofbooks.wordpress.com/2016/09/11/stormy-mistys-foal-by-marguerite-henry/ 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I remember loving Stormy when I was a kid, though I don‘t remember Misty as well. Someday I‘ll get to Assateague to see the ponies. I live in Maryland now so it‘s not that far away! 4y

Day 26 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts - this one doesn't seem to be in the database. Basically it's short letters from some of Henry's readers asking questions about her books, mostly about which parts are true and which parts are fiction. It's an interesting book with a mixture of photographs and illustrations by Wesley Dennis. It was published in 1969, though, so it only talks about her books published before then.

Charityann This sounds interesting! I love Marguerite Henry‘s books!😊 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Charityann - some of the answers are a bit simplistic, given that they are addressed to her target reading group of 10-12yr-olds, but it's still an interesting book. 4y
Pogue I need to get that book. I thought I had them all. 4y

Ok so this story is cute but I have some issues with it. First being WILD ANIMALS SHOULD REMAIN WILD! Nobody should be allowed to buy a wild animal, let alone children. Ok I get the Pony Penning was for population control, but come on now. As innocent as this story was intended to be, I personally found it to give off the wrong message to younger readers.
Maybe I'm being too harsh on this book I don't know, but it just rubbed me the wrong way.

LibrarianRyan I agree. I hated this book. I didn‘t read it until I was an adult. All the kids love it, and it‘s considered a classic and I‘m just like gag. No thank you! 5y
