Arabella | Georgette Heyer
Celebrate the 80th birthday of Regency Romance with great books from Sourcebooks Casablanca! Georgette Heyer had a handful of unforgettable heroines, of which Arabella is one of the most engaging. Daughter of a modest country clergyman, Arabella Tallant is on her way to London when her carriage breaks down outside the hunting lodge of the wealthy Mr. Robert Beaumaris. Her pride stung when she overhears a remark of her host's, Arabella pretends to be an heiress, a pretense that deeply amuses the jaded Beau. To counter her white lie, Beaumaris launches her into high society and thereby subjects her to all kinds of fortune hunters and other embarrassments. When compassionate Arabella rescues such unfortunate creatures as a mistreated chimney sweep and a mixed-breed mongrel, she foists them upon Beaumaris, who finds he rather enjoys the role of rescuer and is soon given the opportunity to prove his worth in the person of Arabella's impetuous young brother... PRAISE FOR GEORGETTE HEYER: "Our Georgette Heyer display of the Sourcebooks reprints has been a huge success, not only to those early fans like myself, but to many new readers who appreciate her style and wit." Nancy Olson, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC "Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen." Publishers Weekly "Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to." Katie Fforde

1. My parents named me Cindy with the reasoning that it‘s what everyone would call me if I was named Cynthia, but I much prefer Cynthia (SO many people call me that!). I love long, traditional names like Arabella, Letitia, Catherine, Sabrina, etc. We named our daughter Victoria Elizabeth! 😁

My third Heyer and not my favorite. I think I might have read too many of them back-to-back and so this one shared too many of the familiar tropes. A sweet girl accidentally makes everyone think she's an heiress. A rich man falls in love with her despite that. Fun, but not memorable. If you're trying her out for the first time, I definitely recommend The Grad Sophy.

Heyer aficionados, I need your help! Hoopla has several of her titles on audio. Which one do you recommend reading first?

CindyMyLifeIsLit Oh my gosh, why don‘t you just ask me which of my children I love the most😂?!? So hard! Okay, I think that I love Venetia the most, but Sylvester and The Grand Sophy are tied for an extremely close second—I mean, photo finish! I don‘t think you could go wrong with any of them—Arabella and A Convenient Marriage are extremely good, as well. I don‘t know if my waffling indecision helps at all, but I‘m very interested to see which my one you choose! 5y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘m no help, but Happy Birthday, Margot! Hope you had a lovely day. 😘 5y
batsy Happy birthday! I'm sorry I'm late with the wishes; hope you had a special day 💕🎂🎊 I haven't read much Heyer, but I adored Venetia. 5y

TheAromaofBooks I would start with Arabella or The Grand Sophy. I haven't read Venetia or Sylvester yet, but the other two I don't think were quite as sparkling. But it's hard to go wrong with Heyer!!! 5y
AlaMich The Grand Sophy was fabulous on audio! It was my very first Heyer and it‘s what made me want to read more. But I was so disappointed to find that Sarah Woodward did not read any of the others because she was so great. 5y
merelybookish @CindyMyLifeIsLit I decided on The Grand Sophy. :) But I know Heyer has devoted fans so am excited to finally read her!

merelybookish @erzascarletbookgasm Thanks Jessie! We went for a hike and then ordered some Indian food for dinner. And I managed to finish two books. So all in all, a pretty good day. :)

merelybookish @batsy Thanks Suba! No need to apologize. :) I'm excited to start her. I'm in the mood for easy, fun reads and I get the sense Heyer fits the bill.
5y
merelybookish @TheAromaofBooks Thank you! I have decided to try The Grand Sophy. I'm excited to read some Heyer.
5y
merelybookish @AlaMich Perfect! That is what I'm going with. I'm excited! 5y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @merelybookish Great choice! I love The Grand Sophy and hope you do too. As you can probably guess, my recommendation is to read all of them, eventually! 😁 5y
AvidReader25 @merelybookish @AlaMich I just read The Grand Sophy last month and it was my first Heyer! It was wonderful! 4y

This was my favourite so far of my Hoopla audible books. Arabella is a minister‘s daughter who finds herself masquerading as a wealthy heiress during her London season. This one is so funny and has one of my favourite male suitors. There‘s a very cute puppy 🐶 rescue. 👍👍#romantsy

Moray_Reads I love the chats Beaumaris has with the dog 😂 6y
Dragon Thanks @Moray_Reads it makes Beaumaris so much more human. 🐶 6y

Dragon Thanks @UnidragonFrag it‘s kind of a spooky sky. Hope we get some rain in the fire zones soon. 🐉 6y

Georgette Heyer is definitely who I turn to when I want a happy book. I‘ve read all 66 of her books a gazillion times, and they‘re the perfect light, funny thing when I‘m having a bad day! (If you‘re not familiar with her, she basically invented Regency romances. But hers are not bodice rippers - More Jane Austen-esque.) #2018bookbinge

One of my favorite Heyers. Maybe because of the dog. 💕

Currently listening to the audiobook - excellent narration by Phyllida Nash.

Heyer first edition covers are so fun.
