The Nix
The Nix | Nathan Hill
From the suburban Midwest to New York City to the 1968 riots that rocked Chicago and beyond, The Nix exploreswith sharp humor and a fierce tendernessthe resilience of love and home, even in times of radical change.
Its 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Andersoncollege professor, stalled writerhas a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasnt seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now shes re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: shes facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuels help.
To save her, Samuel will have to embark on his own journey, uncovering long-buried secrets about the woman he thought he knew, secrets that stretch across generations and have their origin all the way back in Norway, home of the mysterious Nix. As he does so, Samuel will confront not only Fayes losses but also his own lost love, and will relearn everything he thought he knew about his mother, and himself.

Pocked this up for $1 at my awsome library bookstore, anxious to begin this morning as it has been on my TBR since publication.

Loving this book ❤📖

HOLY S@&% chapter 3 of part 8 was one long sentence, amazing writing! I didn‘t even realize until almost at the end of the chapter it was so engrossing.

On my list of most favorite books of all time love this book. If you are a fan of Michael Chabon you will become a fan of Nathan Hill...I sure am.

This was my book club book of the month. It did provide the catalyst for some good conversations. Hill did a nice job on his debut novel of writing a compelling but in some places open ended story.

A college professor finds himself in a tricky spot that leads him to seek out the mother who abandoned him as a child. This sharp social commentary gives a trickle of the current story while telling extensive character backstories. I found the structure a little hard to get into at first, but ultimately I thought it was great.

1. Tagged. I think it was 700-something pages. I really enjoyed it! 📖
2. Sometimes, but when I do decide to dive in, I give myself permission to take my time, reading just a little bit a day, usually a chapter or two. 🕰

I went back & forth w/ this one. There were elements I thought pulled me out of the story (Laura Potsdam) & there were elements I thought could have been beefed up (Henry, Bishop/Bethany, Pwnage). But overall, this is Samuel & Faye‘s story and it‘s a sad, funny, beautiful, tragic one. I‘m glad I stuck with it. I quite enjoyed The Nix. Nathan Hill has used real events of the protests during the 1960s, including that of Alan Ginsberg and his “Om” chanting at Chicago. The characters were really interesting and both Faye & Samuel are well described. Overall definitely a good listen. Full review on my blog, link in bio. www.anushareflects.com

Easily among the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The Nix is wildly entertaining - a confection of satire, sci-fi, sentimentalism and witticism. This is a work of genius, this is that rarity in contemporary fiction. This is a novel to dive and immerse yourself in -- "about a son, the mother who left him as a child, and how his search to uncover the secrets of her life leads him to reclaim his own." ??

Megabooks This is one of my favorite books! 5y

This book...if it was my patient at work, I would refer to it as “tangential and verbose” but as an audiobook with an AMAZING narrator (Ari Fliakos) I just want to call it a masterpiece. There are several plot lines and several characters, but they connect in a way true to real life. Lots to think about here in regard to the choices we make and the way they affect our lives and relationships.

HeatherBookNerd One of my favorite audiobooks ever! 5y

I've gotten super behind on my TBR this year already--for those thinking about grad school while working full time, make sure you know what you're getting into!

I've picked out some titles that have been sitting on my shelf for a while. Not sure if it's time for a small #unhaul to keep my sanity, or if these should stay. All have great reviews (though I think I saw a spoiler for the tagged a little while back).

Any thoughts, fellow Littens? 😁

ljuliel I read I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark. It was ok, but from someone who reads true crime a lot, it wasn‘t anything to write home about. This Tender Land ... so- so for me also. * Others in here have really liked both , so they may have a different opinion than me. 5y
Carolyn11215 I absolutely adored The Snow Child! (edited) 5y
RainyDayReading I‘ve only read I‘ll Be Gone In The Dark and I thought it was fine. The narration was a bit hard to follow since it jumped all over the place. It‘s not a bad book, but I read a lot of true crime so it didn‘t really stand out to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y

CatMS Loving THE NIX / THE OVERSTORY read for bookclub and probably would not have read otherwise but glad because I really liked it, still think about the photographing of the elm tree each year / I'LL BE GONE IN THE DARK fascinating and scary. 1mo

I started listening to audiobooks three years ago when I gained a commute. This is the best I could narrow down the 371 titles that have joined my #audible library in those years!

Megabooks @Cinfhen huh? I liked both, but it almost made my nonfiction best of! Honestly most of my favorite audiobooks are done by a professional VO artist. I usually don‘t like ones read by the author. The author-read ones on here like Heavy and Beauty Queens are the exception. 5y
Megabooks @Cinfhen honestly you can‘t go wrong with Therese Plummer! She‘s the reason that this book is one there. She made it so funny! 5y

Megabooks @Cinfhen I wish I could lend you some of my hoopla loans because I never use them all!! Anyway, I hope this doesn‘t change your opinion on my taste in audiobooks!! 🤪😘 5y
Megabooks @Graywacke Thanks! I didn‘t include overdrive and hoopla. With all three, I‘m well over three months of total listening time! I never listen to music anymore, and I used to live alone, so I would listen a lot!! 5y

Day 6 of #adventrecommends ... a favorite from 2019.

Yes. It‘s a chunkster (737 pgs.) It‘s also a smart novel with big ideas that packs a hell of a punch. A sprawling puzzle that goes back and forth in time, it delves into family secrets. It touches on relationships, trust & loyalty with friends, lovers, parents & children. It‘s also a satire of today‘s politics and media with timely observations and insights captured in a clever way.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Written about the protest in the late sixties. You see the sides of the police, politics and “hippies.” The main character dives into his mom‘s past who abandoned her family when he was young. The twist and turns are so entertaining. The length intimidated me because I tend to get bored with long books, but it was such a fast read!

I enjoyed this satire on academia, publishing, U.S. politics, gaming etc. It is a little overstuffed maybe but ultimately satisfying. The prompt #sitdown made me think of it because the protagonist‘s mother was photographed at a “sit in” in the 70s which has a lot to do with the plot. Convoluted but it‘s the best I can do.😅 #RedroseSeptember

One of my favorite #audiobooks, the MC, Samuel, is in what I consider my tiny Gen Y, born between 1978 and 1982. I love when I find books that cover #mygeneration that tightly.

Plus this book has a lot of other generations, too. It‘s one of the few books I can easily say is “deftly woven.” #anglophileapril

Just finished this sprawling, 732-page novel about a man‘s search for the truths about the mother who left him, the girl he loved and lost, the country he lives in —and about himself. I enjoyed it immensely. I know some have criticized it as being stuffed with superfluous or unnecessary characters. But I think the point is to show that we are all connected by random, seemingly insignificant events and people who impact our individual paths.
