Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs | Judi Barrett

The beloved, bestselling tale of edible weather is brought to life in this interactive book and CD package. The tiny town of Chewandswallow was very much like any other tiny town, except for its weather, which came three times a dayat breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Life for the townspeople was delicious, until the miraculous food weather took a turn for the worse. The food got larger and larger, and so did the portions. The flood of huge food caused chaos, and the people feared for their lives. Something had to be donebefore it was too late! An imaginative story of amazing food weather whose premise was also the basis of the Sony Pictures 2009 hit movie, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs has sold more than 1.9 million copies and is a favorite of grown-ups and children everywhere. This package includes a paperback book along with a CD of the beloved bestseller being read aloud.

“The food kept coming, and it kept getting bigger and bigger. Soon there were pancakes the size of cars and spaghetti as long as the street.”

I could use this book in my classroom and do a lesson on creative writing and imagination. This is because the book inspires creativeness with the weather and food. I could do an activity where students write and illustrate their own “weather“ stories and describe what kinds of objects or food they want to fall from the sky in their own invented world.

My husband loves Chicago Dogs and used to get them at Sonic. I don‘t know how long this place has been around, but we just discovered it and tried it out. We liked it. The old posters with huge hotdogs floating on the water next to a normal sized city made me think of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs for sure!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs! A great storytelling, Science Fiction picture book for the classroom! This is a story about an inventor who invents a machine that can turn water into food. When it rained, it rained FOOD! All types of weather now just brought in food. What a life!
Again, I found a great YouTube Read Aloud video you can adapt in your lesson plan.
https://youtu.be/q5uXp4694sE

MFlowers With this link, your providing a visual for all students, hopefully deepening their comprehension of the story. When you do so, you are meeting EL strategy 17 (Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions) and UDL principle 5.1 (Use multiple media for communication). Videos are exciting for students and helpful for teachers.
You could also use this book as an excuse to
4y
MFlowers eat as much food as possible! You could have each student bring in a dish for a “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs“ party!

StephanyNunez I love the idea of having a food as part of the lesson. I also like the read aloud included. 4y
DrSpalding This is considered modern fantasy rather than science fiction however I can see why you may have thought this. Go back and look in your genre flip guide for more information regarding the elements of science fiction. I love the idea of using the book and having a food related party. Nice alignment with your strategies and principles. 4y

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is a SF picture book written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett. In it, man tells his grandkids a bedtime story about a town where it rains food. This book begs to be used in an RA with potential for vocab, writing, or even science extension activities. This site has excellent teacher resources for the book: https://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs #ucflae3414su20

nquintus Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs can be paired with the activities linked above, whether they involve students making up their own food weather in a writing assignment or creating a weather report in a science lesson with weather words for vocabulary. No matter which, these would work best when paired with ESOL strategy 11: placing language in meaningful context and 12: teaching to language and content. This coincides with UDL 2.1: clarify vocab. 4y
Zoes_Human I adored this book as a child! 4y
DrSpalding Isn‘t it wonderful to see how many ways great books can be integrated into the curriculum? The weather report in science is such a fun and educational activity. Wonderful resources along with principle and strategy alignment. 4y

DGRachel @Cinfhen @Hooked_on_books The Calhoun is really good so far. Very readable and emotional. I feel seen, and that‘s huge. I think it has a very specific, narrow audience (Gen X women), but I‘m curious to see if she expands her thoughts at all to relate to more people. 5y

This MF book is a classic, and one of my favorites growing up. It was written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett. Chewandswallow is a special town with special weather. The residents never have to buy food, because three times a day food falls from the sky for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Until the weather takes a turn, and gets extreme. How will the residents of Chewandswallow react? #ucflae3414f19

Jgolub13 This classic book recieved many awards including the 1980 Colorado Children's Book Award, 1984 Georgia Children's Book Award, and the 1990 Delaware Diamonds Award. 5y
Jgolub13 This book has fantastic illustrations that help capture the imagination of its readers. My ESOl strategy is #30 Encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships. Also, my UDL principle is Use multiple media for communication (5.1). 5y
Jgolub13 This lesson plan takes a classic MF book, and creates a science lesson. This lesson helps children understand how living things rely on their environment like the residents of Chewandswallow rely on the weather for food. https://teachers.net/lessons/posts/1467.html 5y
Jgolub13 This book would be a great RA, but an even better RT! 5y
DrSpalding This is a classic book and obviously a multiaward winner. Read aloud for sure and if you can create or find a readers theater to assist in fluency… That would work well! 5y

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is a F picture book written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett about a small town named Chewandswallow where it rains food. As great as food falling from the sky sounded initially, it caused problems that the people of Chewandswallow now have to face. An activity that I would like to do with my students after doing a RA would be for them to make newspaper articles from the Chewandswallow newspaper.

Mwinship I got this idea from https://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs The EL strategy 50 about using a variety of comprehension activities and UDL guideline 5.1 and 2.3 about illustrating and using multiple media for communication align with this book and assignment. #UCFLAE3414F19 5y

rretzler I agree with @LibrarianRyan I read the book first and enjoyed it and just shook my head and the movie and sequel. I suppose they may have been okay if I hadn‘t read the book, but I‘m a purist and it bothers me if the movie doesn‘t follow the book. In this case, the two aren‘t really even in the same universe 🤣 5y

This book is a Fantasy. This book is based on a grandfather telling his grandkids a story about how the people in the town never have to go hungry because food rains from the sky. Although, it seems like a joy it begins to get very messy and destructive. This would be a great storytelling.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is an American children's book written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett. This book is a fantasy and did not win any awards but, the author has wrote many other books as well that deals with food coming to life and taking over the world. This book will make you very hungry while you read and is funny as well. #ucflae3414F17

Jaquessial UDL strategy I would use in my class 2.3. With this book you are able to teach on some mathematics and symbolism of science as well. Compare and contrast the weather in the book to the weather outside in the real world. 7y
Jaquessial Esol strategy best for teaching with this book would be #46, use discovery learning activities( hands-on-activities). Because this has a lot of science and math within the book you could have students create projects like a cloud with different types of food coming out of it and many other fun things. 7y
