Anne's House of Dreams
Anne's House of Dreams | Lucy Maud Montgomery
116 posts | 180 read | 28 to read
Anne's own true love, Gilbert Blythe, is finally a doctor, and in the sunshine of the old orchard, among their dearest friends, they are about to speak their vows. Soon the happy couple will be bound for a new life together and their own dream house, on the misty purple shores of Four Winds Harbour... A new life means new problems to solve, new surprises. Anne and Gilbert will make new friends and neighbors: Captain Jim, the lighthouse attendant, with his sad stories of the sea; Miss Cornelia Bryant, the lady who speaks from the heart - and speaks her mind; and the tragically beautiful Leslie Moore, into whose dark life Anne shines a brilliant light.

I continue to make my way through the Anne of Green Gables books 💚

This one was new to me.

This book comes up as book 4 in my Kindle collection, but I'm seeing that, according to Anne's age, Anne of Windy Poplars should have been next (??)

Either way, this was delightful, and I am sure to enjoy all of the books no matter which order I read them in.

BarbaraJean Anne of Windy Poplars was written later, so that‘s likely why this one is listed as # 4! Also I‘m not sure if Windy Poplars is in the public domain yet—the Kindle collection of Anne that I have leaves out both Windy Poplars and Anne of Ingleside, because they weren‘t yet public domain when the collection was published. 7mo
jdiehr @BarbaraJean Interesting...I'll have to check the titles in my collection. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! 7mo
BarbaraJean You‘re welcome! I‘d always assumed Montgomery wrote them chronologically—didn‘t realize she wrote Windy Poplars and Ingleside later until I got that Kindle collection and wondered why they weren‘t included! 7mo

“Our library isn‘t very expensive. But every book in it is a friend.” I absolutely loved seeing Anne become a wife and mother in this book. The first half of this book made my heart sore and sometimes cry. I will admit, about half way through the story I feel like Anne became an observer as apposed to the main character. It‘s still a great book though and I dearly love relate to a the newly wed wife and the dreams of her home.

I adore this one because it reminds me of the first book with its intense emotions. This is the adult version of little Anne‘s melodrama. This book has the most idyllic romances, the strongest friendships, and the most joy, the most tragedy, desperation and sadness, the eeriest scenes… but after that roller coaster this chapter ends sweetly.

Jane was not brilliant, and had probably never made a remark worth listening to in her life; but she never said anything that would hurt anyone‘s feelings—which may be a negative talent but is likewise a rare and enviable one. #rereadingsummer

I didn't love this one. The sad thing that happens isn't dwelt on long enough (I know, I know, it's a children's book) and the dated language of the Dick Moore storyline made me uncomfortable.

On my first read of the series 10+ years ago, book 4 (Anne of Windy Poplars) was my favorite. Now, I think book 5 may be it! Anne‘s House of Dreams is full of whimsy like her other books, with laughter, heartache and lots of great characters. I do wish we got more of the story from Anne‘s POV but I‘m really enjoying this reread. Better late than never to the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead !! 5⭐️

BarbaraJean I‘d always thought of Anne of the Island as my favorite, followed by Windy Poplars—but rereading the series for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead, this one was definitely my favorite. I just love the friendships between Anne and Gil and Cornelia and Captain Jim and Leslie and Owen. #squadgoals 😆 3y

I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting Anne‘s newlywed life in Four Winds. I love the new characters Montgomery introduces—Leslie Moore & Captain Jim are up there with Marilla & Matthew on my list of favorite AoGG characters. More than the other Anne books, this is the one I want to step into: evenings of Captain Jim‘s stories at the lighthouse, rambling along the rock shore, and having a heart to heart with Leslie in the garden. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

LeahBergen I loved this one and the new characters, too. 💖 4y

Just barely a pick for this one.

I loved the beginning where we get an update on what have happened with characters from previous books due to Anne‘s wedding. And it went a little down hill after that for me. I can‘t really explain why. I think part of it is that I thought there would be more Gilbert now that they‘re married, but no. I liked the new characters and how Anne always seems to make friends wherever she goes

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

xicanti I feel like Montgomery totally lost interest in Gilbert. 4y

4a. What will stay with you from this reading of Anne‘s House of Dreams?

4b. What are your favorite or most memorable scenes and themes from this book?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

And—something I keep meaning to post: please let me know if you‘d like to be taken off the tag list! No worries if you‘re quietly following along, but I don‘t want to keep tagging people that don‘t want to be tagged. 😊

Hooked_on_books I was quite surprised at the choice to kill off Anne‘s first baby after only a few hours. That was shocking! I know it happens now and happened much more then, but I was really surprised by the choice, especially in a children‘s book and after taking such great pains to avoid saying she was pregnant. That and Anne‘s general delight and contentment settling in there will stick with me. 4y
Clare-Dragonfly My favorite has to be Owen and Leslie falling in love. So natural, and so romantic. 🥰 4y
See All 6 Comments
BarbaraJean @Hooked_on_books Seriously - Montgomery couldn't write about pregnancy, but having an infant die is totally appropriate and not disturbing for children?! Seems a leetle inconsistent to me. But I guess anything even remotely connected to sex must be left out! @Clare-Dragonfly I love the Owen and Leslie love story so much!! It has major Miss Lavendar vibes for me. 4y
BarbaraJean What sticks with me is the way Anne has matured. Katherine Brooke talked about Anne living a charmed life, and that feels true--everything seems to go right for Anne. But seeing real grief come into her life with the loss of Joyce, and seeing her wrestle with the realities of the hardship Leslie faced...it made her feel more realistic. And it gave greater depth, I think, to all the friendships in this book. 4y
quietjenn I just really love the setting in this one. I am very down for my own remote, windswept cottage on the coast and a gnarly old lighthouse keeper friend with a million stories. 4y

3a. In this book, we get a much closer look at Anne and Gilbert as a couple (and we finally get more of Gilbert!). What did you think of how their relationship is portrayed? What did you think of how Gilbert is portrayed?

3b. How did you feel about the way Montgomery handles Anne‘s pregnancies, with little allusions like “Anne‘s dear hope for the spring”, etc.? Did you find it quaint, annoying, forced?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

AnneCecilie I thought it would be more of him. I picked up on Anne‘s first pregnancy but the second came as a complete surprise to me (edited) 4y
Hooked_on_books I thought the refusal to use the word “pregnant” or any other synonym felt so forced! And then having an actual stork bring the second baby?!? Really?!? I was rolling my eyes a bit there. I get that this was written in a different era and for children, but the verbal gymnastics to avoid it was a bit ludicrous. 4y
See All 13 Comments
Hooked_on_books Like @AnneCecilie , I expected to see more of Gilbert. It feels like in the first half of the book that he practically isn‘t there! I felt like their courtship was pretty egalitarian, but now that they‘re married, it‘s so much more traditional, and that grates a bit. When he steamrolls her to tell Leslie what she should do with Dick, that bothered me. That‘s not partnership. And then her defending him to Cornelia even though she didn‘t agree. 🤮 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I liked seeing more of Gilbert but I felt like their relationship was very stereotypical. He‘s the Man and he is Wise and he Leaves the House. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really didn‘t like the pregnancy hints, or much of anything around Anne‘s pregnancies. I‘m sure a lot of it is the time period but the lack of detail frustrated me. The worst was when “they” didn‘t let her see little Joy after the first hour. If you‘re so sure she‘s going to die… 4y
Clare-Dragonfly (And how do you know that? Why?), give her mother MORE time with her, not LESS! 4y
BarbaraJean @AnneCecilie I think it's proof of how little Gilbert we get in the other books that I felt like there was a lot more Gilbert in this one! @Hooked_on_books is right now that I look back, there's very little Gilbert in the first parts of the book, which now that I think of it, is super weird seeing as they're newlyweds and have been apart for most of their engagement! 4y
BarbaraJean @AnneCecilie @Hooked_on_books @Clare-Dragonfly The pregnancy avoidance (especially that stupid stork passage) felt very of its time to me--cautious against mentioning anything inappropriate for children. But I think there are better ways to do that. I mean, it's possible to MENTION that a child will be coming to the Home of Dreams without being graphic about the process! I don't remember being annoyed by it before, but it grated on me this time. 4y
BarbaraJean I was bothered by the mild paternalistic sexism in this book, too. @Hooked_on_books @Clare-Dragonfly I agree that their courtship seemed more progressive for its time, but their marriage feels very sterotype-y. With Dick Moore, I actually agreed with Gilbert, and really disliked the way Anne went about her disagreement (stereotypically “feminine“ manipulation). Then how she spoke about it afterward felt very “Hubby Knows Best.“ Cont'd ⬇ (edited) 4y
BarbaraJean Cont'd from above... I actually liked how Gilbert said he welcomed Anne's disagreement and didn't want her to just go along with everything he says. But then so much of their life is unilaterally decided by Gilbert... I was mad about his decision about the house at the end of the book! 4y
Clare-Dragonfly The way the pregnancy was talked around did not feel like it was for kids! Kids wouldn‘t get it, but adults might understand what “her hope for the spring” and “she‘s not supposed to be on her feet too much” meant. (OK, the stork bit was more childish.) It felt more like the way Jane Austen refers to Charlotte Lucas‘ pregnancy at the end of Pride & Prejudice: “his dear Charlotte‘s situation.” More like you can‘t say “pregnant” in polite company. 4y
quietjenn I did feel like we got more Gilbert and if he wasn't much in the first half it didn't register. And I agree that I was more irked by Anne than Gilbert, when it came to Dick, because for him it was a professional duty, not emotional decision based on their relationship with Leslie. But I supposed that does play into traditional gender roles. 4y
quietjenn The approach to her pregnancies did have me rolling my eyes a bit, most especially 🙄 that stork scene. 4y

2a. New characters! What did you think of the cast of characters we meet in Four Winds: Miss Cornelia, Captain Jim, Leslie, Owen, Susan Baker? Who are your favorites?
2b. Anne‘s friendship with Leslie has a much different tone than her girlhood or college friendships. What do you think of their friendship? What makes it different from Anne‘s friendships with Diana; Priscilla, Phil, and Stella; or even Katherine Brooke?
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Jerdencon I loved captain Jim! I want to meet him! I felt bad for for Leslie and was happy at how things ended up for her. Miss Cordelia kind of got under my skin at times and couldn‘t have put up with her as much an Anne did! (edited) 4y
Jerdencon And I think her relationship with Leslie is so much based on adult experiences of loss and love which is what makes it so different from the other relationships she had in the past that while true friendships seemed more frivolous in nature. (edited) 4y
See All 9 Comments
BarbaraJean @Jerdencon Captain Jim--💜 I want to sit in the lighthouse with Captain Jim and the Four Winds friends, and just listen to his tales all night! And I agree with you about Anne's friendship with Leslie. It's a friendship between women, instead of girls--there's so much depth and maturity there. I think it's significant that they have such a breakthrough in their friendship only after Anne loses little Joy. Shared loss opens up a bridge for Leslie. 4y
AnneCecilie I loved captain Jim and Miss Cornelia, and I love to see how Anne seems to connect with people no matter where she is. The race of Joseph will always find each other. I never thought much about Anne and Leslie‘s but I think @Jerdencon is on to something 4y
Hooked_on_books I liked all the new characters. I do think in person Ms Cornelia would drive me a little crazy, but she‘s a lot of fun on the page! And I agree there‘s a definite richness to Anne‘s friendship with Leslie. Some of her previous friendships felt more like projects as she tried to fix/mend/change people, but this one felt more real. Plus, we got to see it play out by having Leslie so much more present on the page than Diana ever was. 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I liked the new characters! Miss Cornelia was annoying, but funny. Leslie and Captain Jim were wonderful. I agree with what others said about the depth of Anne‘s friendship with Leslie. 4y
quietjenn @Jerdencon 100%! And I think their relationship is made all the stronger for it. It is hard won - it's not an immediate think and not to discount instant kinship, it is all the richer for that. 4y
quietjenn I (almost) always enjoy the characters that Montgomery introduces and these were no exception. But Leslie and, most especially, Captain Jim have my 🧡 I for sure want to sit around the lighthouse all night, listening to his stories, @BarbaraJean. Happy that he got his great Canadian book in the end. 4y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead discussion time!

1a. What do you think of this book compared to the other books in the series so far?

1b. House of Dreams returns to a more traditional narrative, with more of a plot than we‘ve seen in the other books. How did you like the shift in writing style? What does it add (or take away) from the story for you?

Jerdencon I think this was definitely one of my favorites that I‘ve read so far - at times I had a hard time putting it down after a chapter. It definitely has a more grown up tone than the other books. 4y
AnneCecilie I‘m not sure. I really like the first few chapters where all the old characters are mentioned and we get a catch up. I guess I was just expecting more Gilbert now that they are married and we don‘t. I liked the new characters though. 4y
See All 7 Comments
rjsthumbelina I remember this one being my favorite of the series when I read them all in 5th/6th grade! I loved how grown up it felt 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I liked this best of all the sequels so far. The more traditional plot is a big reason! I also felt like this was the first book in which Anne was the girl who had loved Matthew. In some of the others she points out that she had a hard life before she came to Green Gables, but in this one his death finally seems like a trauma that affected her whole life. 4y
Hooked_on_books I think the more traditional narrative served the book really well. I liked that the focus was on the progression of their lives moving forward and keeping up with just a few other characters. We got to know those others so much more deeply. This is the best book of the series so far for me as a result. 4y
quietjenn I really enjoyed this one. I am always very fond of “newly married couple set up home and make their way in the world together“ stories, and this was no exception. And I appreciate Anne's maturity here and the view of her wrestling with the harder, more difficult realities of life. I love young Anne, full of wonder and mischievousness, but can relate more to her as a grown-up, I think. 4y

BarbaraJean @meghathecloud Aw... I know how that goes! If your reading does pick up and you want to join in again, the next end-of-book discussion (on Anne of Ingleside) isn't until May 8. These are pretty quick reads if you feel like catching up and want to jump back in then! 4y
BarbaraJean @Hooked_on_books I think this is my favorite, too! But then, I think I feel that way at the end of every Anne book. 😆 I'm so glad you've enjoyed the readalong, and I understand stopping at this point as well. House of Dreams is a good one to end on. Thank you for reading along this far--I've really enjoyed your posts and comments on the books! 4y
BarbaraJean @AnneCecilie @EclecticBookLover Glad you're continuing to enjoy these! It's been so fun to read along with everyone. @Jerdencon Such a joy to be discovering them for the first time! 4y
BarbaraJean @Clare_Dragonfly Oh, I know--those last two chapters are tearjerkers! Lots of both joy and sorrow in this one. @quietjenn This one especially was hard to portion out to only a chapter a day--more plot! 😄 4y

Anne and Gilbert move into their house of dreams to start their life together. Despite some silly inclusions (including ludicrous gymnastics to avoid using the word “pregnant” or any synonym), I think this is the best book of the Anne series so far. It keeps its focus on a few characters, allowing the reader to get to know those people more deeply.

One morning, when a windy golden sunrise was billowing over the gulf in waves of light, a certain weary stork flew over the bar of Four Winds Harbour on his way from the Land of Evening Stars. Under his wing was tucked a sleepy, starry-eyed little creature. The stork was tired, and he looked wistfully about him. He knew he was somewhere near his destination, but he could not yet see it.

(This reminds so much about the scene from Dumbo.)

This has been a bit of a stressful week for me, and my chapter-a-day of Anne has been such a needed oasis. It delights me that Anne‘s caller brought her “work” with her! Let‘s make this popular again. Anytime I go to someone‘s house I‘ll bring my knitting or my embroidery. Anyone coming to my house is welcome to do the same! (You know, when we can visit people again. Lots of people took up crafts during lockdown, right? Perfect time to revive crafting during visits!) #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

ravenlee Years ago I taught a friend to knit, and when one of our coworkers found out about our knitting sessions she was mad for not being invited. So we had a knitting party, and another friend wanted to come too, but didn‘t knit so she brought the papercrafts she was working on for her wedding. It was a lot of fun and we should definitely bring this back! 4y
Clare-Dragonfly @ravenlee I do have a weekly craft group (knitting, sewing, cross-stitch, crochet…) but I want to make crafting together just a normal thing instead of a special craft party thing! 4y
ravenlee I have been known (well, before motherhood) to carry my knitting project with me and randomly pull it out and start working. I was actually reprimanded at my training base early in my USAF career because I was knitting while on “casual status.” I was told it looked unprofessional to sit at a desk answering phones and knitting, and that it was honestly better to stare into space or play games on the computer. 🙄🤨 4y

🤣I do love Marilla and Rachel... and these conversations where they shake their heads at her “queer” notions crack me up. You can tell they love her dearly, even as they shake their heads at her... and even as they seem to be completely talking past each other! #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Time to catch up on the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead!

Which one shall I read: Edwardian Anne or 1940s Anne? 😆😆

readordierachel Both of these are 😍 4y
MsMelissa Definitely Edwardian 😊 4y
Ruthiella I saw a set once at a library sale that was 1970s Anne and I just couldn‘t bring myself to purchase them, they were so off the mark! 4y

Singout I have two copies of Anne of Green Gables from my childhood because the first one literally had the cover destroyed. The second one at all the sequels just have covers that are heavily wrinkled. 4y
BarbaraJean I vote Edwardian! That cover is gorgeous! Meanwhile I‘ll be over here reading my old Bantam paperback which seems to depict Gilbert as a redhead... 4y
KVanRead Wow! What beauties. I‘ve never seen that ‘40s cover before —love her hair! 4y
Hooked_on_books I vote for Edwardian. Mine is an ebook from the library, so much less interesting than these! 4y
batsy Read 1940s Anne and pause every once in awhile to admire Edwardian Anne? 😆 4y
Cathythoughts Fab 💫 4y
Leftcoastzen Nice ! 4y
MemoirsForMe I‘d gladly purchase an exorbitant admission ticket to tour your amazing vintage book collection! 😍🎟 4y

It does seem so strange to think of Anne being married. In a way she just seems to me the little girl Mathew brought home here fourteen years ago. I can‘t realize that she‘s grown up. I shall never forget what I felt when I saw Mathew bringing in a girl.

(Another glimpse into the past that I just love)

I remember telling Matthew, that evening when he brought me to Green Gables, that I never expected to be a bride because I was so homely most one would ever want to marry me -unless some foreign missionary did. I had an idea then that foreign missionaries couldn‘t afford to be finicky in the matter of looks if they wanted a girl to risk her life among cannibals. You should have seen the foreign missionary Priscilla married. He was as handsome

AnneCecilie I just love the glimpse into the past. And who Anne used to be. 4y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead starts Anne's House of Dreams tomorrow! Here's the first piece of the chapter-a-day schedule if you're reading along with us daily. And you can mark your calendars for the book-end discussion on March 27. 😊 Just looking over the chapter titles brought back so many memories--I'm looking forward to re-acquainting myself with all these characters!

Mehso-so

Nice to see Anne grow & mature, but a bit of a bummer that she also got...boring. Anne Shirley of books 1-4 had so much to her; Anne Blythe is this milquetoast woman playing house & not doing much beyond reacting to ppl around her. Did love the descriptions of Four Winds, beautiful writing that puts you there, & appreciated the smaller cast of new ppl & heavier topics addressed. New Anne is apropos of her time but still a bit of a letdown. 3/5 ⭐️

Leslie Moore stood apart, a tragic appealing figure of thwarted womanhood. Anne resolved that she would win entrance into the kingdom of that lonely soul & find there the comradeship it could so richly give, were it not for the cruel fetters that held it in a prison not of its own making.

“Lord, dearie, I don‘t hate them. They aren‘t worth it. I just sort of despise them...”

I haven‘t been loving this series but I‘m committed to finishing it, and this one does seem to have better reviews from my friends on Goodreads.

My first box checked off for #BoonSpinBingo (besides free spaces haha) Revisiting this one for #HeyCarrots (yes, it was July's book, but y'know) and, as always, I loved every page. Captain Jim can get a little rambly sometimes, but I love him so much that I don't mind. More than most of the books - except Rolls - this one really gets me in the feels as Anne has a lot happening in her life. The whole part of the story with Leslie's husband and ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) choosing to do the right (hard) thing - only to have the truth set her free in the end - hits me every time. Captain Jim says, “It ain't our feelings we have to steer by through life - no, no, we'd shipwreck mighty often if we did that. There's only one safe compass and we've got to set our course by that - what's right to do.“ Amen, Captain Jim, amen.

Anyway, a delightful addition to the series that I never tire of reading.

TheAromaofBooks @Enchanted_Bibliophile - My old editions are pretty worn out, so I've been collecting these as I reread the series. I'm totally in love with them!! Each one is a different color, too. 4y
Enchanted_Bibliophile I might just need to also start a recollection 🤭. These are really pretty 😍 4y
Addison_Reads Captain Jim is one of my favorite characters. 💚 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Addison_Reads - Right?? I cry every time I read this book when he crosses the bar! 😢 I love the way Montgomery ties together the story of him getting his life book written and that he gets to read it. So perfect! 4y
Flingogal Super pretty cover!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Flingogal - Thank you!! I can only find this cover style for some of the series, but I'm getting the ones that I can!! 4y

🏖 Tagged book. I can‘t remember any other book connected to ocean.

🏖 I spotted around 12 different species of butterflies in my garden 🦋😊 I was able to capture few beauties in my camera.

🏖 I usually listen to flute music in summer. It gives soothing feel. Can‘t think of any song in particular.

Thanks for the tag @MoonWitch94

I enjoyed reading this book, unlike the 2 previous books. I was excited to read about Anne‘s wedding, & her new life! Beautiful narration of the location & new characters. Interesting & quick read. Lots of love for Leslie & Captain Jim 🥰 4🌟

Better late than never, starting Anne of Ingleside this weekend 🤦🏻‍♀️ #heycarrots #bookspinbingo #4

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I'm behind, too - I just read Windy Poplars this month! 4y

What a delight to finally have Anne married and in her little house of dreams. We meet another cast of quirky characters and see the Blythe family grow. Anne is just what my soul needs during this dumpster fire of a year.

One of my favorites in the series so far. 💜 I loved all the new characters in this one, especially Leslie and Captain Jim.

I never thought I'd love seeing Anne anywhere but Green Gables, but in this one she and Gilbert begin creating their own life in a new place and its a wonderful thing to experience with them.

#heycarrots I know why I think she looks haughty on my cover. Poor Gilbert knows he made her mad. @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Flingogal

I loved everything about this book. Captain Jim's kindness, Miss Cornelia's resentment of men, Leslie's and Owen's sweet romance, and Anne's and Gilbert's love and loyalty. I truly think if I could live in a book, this would be the one I choose.

MynameisSnow These were my FAVORITE movie series as a child. My fav was the first one, espwhen she breaks the blackboard on Gilbert‘s head. I tired to read it to my 7 year old a few month back, because I‘d not read it before either, and I think it was just too much for her attention span. At some point I need it to pick it up for myself again. My friend says there is a series about a girl named Emily that the author ore wrote as well, and says it‘s quite good. (edited) 4y
Scochrane26 @MynameisSnow I think I read them somewhere in my pre-teen years-maybe 12 or 13 years old. So, maybe try again in a few yrs with your daughter. I didn‘t know about the Emily series until I saw it on Litsy. 4y
Butterfinger @Scochrane26 @MynameisSnow I was in middle when I first read them. I love Emily as much as I do Anne and mean to read her series again too. 4y
