Been a bit quiet on here the last couple days. My grandmother passed away on Friday. Today is the last day of #JoyousJanuary. I am going to try to finish my goal books for that readathon by Wednesday when I leave and I thought the tagged book would be appropriate “on deck†book if I find downtime during my trip to Nebraska for her service. My grandma actually owned a bookstore and visiting it was one of my fondest childhood memories. #RIP

This #audiobook made me laugh out loud, but I kept on putting it aside for other books. The humor was fairly crass for me, which I don‘t enjoy as much. Lots of fighting and f***ing.

A large family gets together to sit shiva for their dad. Lots of revelations. Lots of funny moments. Lots of arguments. In the end, a big-hearted book.

marleed It‘s not often that I have to stop reading for tears in my eyes from laughing so hard - but the description of Judd walking in to see his boss ass-up upon Judd‘s wife is about as funny as I‘ve ever read an author write. 3y

This is my plan for the #booked2021 winter prompts! I completely gave up on all of the reading challenges that I set out to participate in last year. I just couldn‘t stay focused when life became overwhelming. Hopefully I‘ll have better luck this year!

1. Set in Australia
2. Nonfiction science written by a woman
3. Baked goods on cover
4. #covidheroes
5. Mustache on cover
6. Author‘s first name starts with an A, B, or C

alisiakae Lots of great picks! 🙌🽠4y

marleed @Cinfhen I dare anyone to read aloud the description of walking in on your wife while she is in heated a compromising position with your boss - and not find tears in your eyes from laughing so hard. 4y
Cinfhen For me it was all of the Jewish family references and synagogue moments. They just rang SO TRUE @marleed but that first scene WAS hilarious 😆 4y
britt_reads @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve been curious about Sourdough for awhile. Sweetgrass was recently recommended to me by one of my professors, and I ended up getting it for Christmas. I‘m really excited for both! 4y

âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸ Much to their surprise and chagrin, the grown Foxman children are asked to sit shiva when their nonpracticing father dies. Personal lives are falling apart rather spectacularly, yet despite all the drama, their flawed and nurturing sibling relationships bring them closer. Dark humor carries them through the collective shit storm. I love these authentic characters. Secured a spot in my all-time favorites. #reread

I felt like I was inside Judd Foxman‘s head sitting shiva with his dysfunctional family for his father following the collapse of his marriage. As a woman it was not a comfortable place to be, but it was interesting. I saw the movie several years ago, but film can‘t adequately capture Judd‘s retelling of walking into his bedroom to find his beautiful wife in a, ‘ahem, compromising position with his boss - LOL!

elisebarker I LOVED this book so much!! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Oh my! 5y
marleed @elisebarker I did too. It‘s an interesting story to me because as a family saga I would assume a female audience yet I felt it was completely written from the perspective of a man not really thinking about who his readers would eventually be. It just felt honest. 5y

marleed @TheAromaofBooks Seriously, if you don‘t read beyond the first chapter, reading that description would still be memorable! 5y
plemmdog I loved this book and was curious about the female audience. It felt very real and I think the narrator‘s raw vulnerability was what ultimately won me over. Thanks for sharing 5y
britt_brooke I just finished Matthew Norman‘s We‘re All Damaged (which I recommend) and it made me think of how much I love this one ... so, I‘m rereading it now. The movie is also fantastic! I‘m not usually a fan of adaptations but it was dead on. (edited) 5y

Mehso-so

I ended up liking this more than I expected. I still don‘t like some pronunciation habits of the narrator (🙄) but after that ridiculous Schiwa-thing was finally resolved I felt milder about the plot of „your average messed up family ties“. It actually pictures real life properly, I think. And that some men in their (late) 20‘s still act like pubescents ain‘t also new. It‘s more a „Deal with it.“

A bit excessive but overall okay.

blurb
Buechersuechtling
post image

I started listening, yesterday. It‘s about a family having no strong ties to one another. Then the father dies and his last wish is, that his family sits Schiwa for him …

I liked this summary but I‘m not sure the story and I will become friends. I don‘t like the narrator very much, he here and there has an accent that disturbs me.

Content-related, I‘m where the kid spilled his full potty-chair on the eating table. A bit too weird for me.

This was good, a quick read, funny, poignant, and entertaining. A very Jewish aesthetic, I felt, with the layering of existential sadness over everything. Strong themes of how families communicate, how people live up (or down) to their familial roles, and a heaping helping of what-might-have-beens. As an ex-northeasterner, I enjoyed all the comic characters that dropped in.
