Some of the writing fell a *smidge* flat, for me. But, I stayed engaged enough that I wanted to finish. The narrative is split between a present-day FLDS plural wife who is charged with her husband‘s murder & her estranged son who tries to solve who-really-done-it & the story of Ann Eliza Young. Both women are the 19th wives. Ann Eliza to Brigham Young himself, & she documented their very public divorce. #ReadingAmerica Utah; February #BookSpin
2 timelines: historical fiction about the life of Ann Eliza Young, ex-wife of Brigham Young and campaigner against Mormon polygamy, and a modern mystery where a child of a polygamous marriage sets out to prove that it wasn't his mother who killed his father.
I found both parts compelling. I'd like to know more about the 19thC characters and I would read a mystery series with Jordan as a main character and Johnny and Tom as his sidekicks.
I liked the first 3/4 of this dual narrative story about Brigham Young‘s 19th wife who set the dismantling of polygamy in process and a modern day 19th wife living in a fundamentalist sect who stands accused of killing her husband. Both narrative threads are well written and very interesting. I was thoroughly absorbed, but then the end seemed to drag out a little too long and was a little less than satisfying. Still a pick. #doublespin
Wasn‘t in the mood to hop right into another Kindle book, so I‘m cheating this month and reading my #doublespin first. Kindle is great, and my used copy of The 19th Wife clearly has a heinous crease in the cover, but there‘s still something a little bit more special about holding a good old paper book in my hand. I was daunted by the size of this one at first, but I‘m enjoying it so far!
Husband got back from hiking in the wilds of Nevada and Utah (Bryce Canyon) yesterday and brought back this souvenir. He had no idea it was on my tbr list but I think he knows me well by now. Today‘s our 32nd wedding anniversary.
Recently sent to me by @Caroline2 (who enjoyed it). I haven‘t got round to reading it yet, but I would suggest that this is #groundsfordivorce...

Thanks so much for sending me this book @Caroline2 - it does sound really good! I‘m very much looking forward to reading it. As you can see I‘ve already tried to remove the stickers with my magic potion, but they were tenacious little so-and-sos this time! I think they‘d been on there for ever....
Love the llama card as well - it sounds like you need that holiday, hope you have a fabulous time! ⛺️ 😘
Thanks Helen @squirrelbrain for the lovely card. I was going to ask you if my package has arrived then I realised I hadn‘t even posted it yet!! 🤦♂️ 😆 I‘ll get it out today. 👍🏻
This is my current Bookclub read! It was actually really good! Loved the twist and turns that happened throughout and I highly recommend this book!
This was fascinating!! I loved learning about the early pioneer days in America from a woman‘s perspective and then the second storyline of a modern day polygamist wife was well written too. Really good historical fiction with expert research and complex female characters that I loved. At over 600 pages my only complaint was the ending (last 200pages) felt long winded. Highly recommend tho. (As for those stickers...🤬)
Another book from my unread shelf.

Peaceful Saturday night, hooked on this book! #Archlovesittoo #the19thwife #davidebershoff
Moving between historical and modern polygamy, this book shows that polygamy for men is exactly like #you&mebutmostlyme #musicalnewyear @Cinfhen @vivastory
Finished! I enjoyed this book even though it was a bit long. An interesting read, I learnt a lot.
I couldn‘t decide which of these books to read next, so I read the first few pages of each to help me decide and I‘ve gone with ‘The 19th wife‘. Thanks for the recommendation @MrsMalaprop
Starting a new book is sooooooo exciting!!!

The 19th wife of a polygamist has been jailed after her husband was murdered. Her son who was expelled from the community years before (as a minor) shows up to try to help her. Parallel to this story is the story of the 19th wife of Brigham Young. (she who tried to end polygamy) Good mystery. A lot of history. Interesting but a bit long.
#Aprella #selfishlove Brigham Young is guilty of a lot of selfish love in this book The 19th Wife.
My #bookhaul from the local library‘s used book sale. 😍 A lot of #historicalfiction this time around. Also a cute #chicklit title. Shopping at the used book sale is guilt free since I‘m paying only $.50 a book, and it‘s like recycling 😊. Has anyone read any of these titles?
#NuYear #Morals @Cinfhen @TrishB A great read & an in-depth look at polygamy. An example of how ones mans “morality” can be a life of humiliation & suffering for so many.
Reading my first book of 2018 with one of my all-time favorite shows in the background, The Great British Bake-off.
To quote Ann Eliza : *Interest in the harem , it seems, runs deep * Well, it certainly ran deep for me , I found myself reading & watching & mistrusting with the mind of a sister wife ! The writer really took me there. I found this book compelling & informative. I‘m giving this 5 ⭐️ & it‘s also one of my top 5 reads this year. Great characters & History & murder & some very beautiful writing. (Ebershoff also wrote The Danish Girl )
I‘m nearly finished this one. Review soon. Just a little taste of the writing 💫
This book is an excellent read. I remember watching the series Big Love , Bill Paxton & Jeanne Tripplehorn were outstanding in their roles. So , this book is giving me a real insight into the background of polygamy, & it‘s rise in Utah in the 1800‘s/ also a Murder investigation gives the book further depth. Sometimes it‘s hard to believe what I‘m reading. It‘s very well written. I‘m not finished yet, but I already know it‘s a 5⭐️
Littens ! Officially on holls. 🙏. Driving to Dublin tomo & then flying to Vienna...
We all have such varied tastes in books. , so interesting. & This book is holding me - best one in a long time for me. Chat tomo. 👍
I have been waiting to start this one. A recommendation from a friend, , whose book recommends I look forward to ( i. e. Stoner )
So, off to a good start. The writing is superb , the storyline is superb ( in my book ). 👍
OH I forgot to post this yest for #novemberbythenumbers
Sorry about the awful stickers, why do they deface books like this?!?!?! 😭
Having lived in Utah for 22 years, this has to be my pick for #19. #Novemberbythenumbers @JoeStalksBeck @Tiffy_Reads
Another from my TBR for #riotgrams day 6: #numbertitles !
"It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States. A rich account of her family‘s polygamous history is revealed, including how both she and her mother became plural wives."
@bookriot
Best historical fiction that I have read!!!! Mormon church history, Mormon cults in our days, mystery, LGBT are all in one the breathtaking book❤️ The Audio is narrated by several actors, but I checked out the actual book as well and could not put it down!
I am really not sure why I kept listening to this book. Maybe it was the hope that it would get better at some point but sorry to say I wish I could have that time back.
I really enjoyed this book. Not much of a mystery but the different perspectives across generations was super interesting. I would really only recommend to people who like Lifetime movies though.
Has anyone read this? It looks really interesting, I just wondered what everyone thought!

@RealLifeReading
I accidentally read these almost back to back. And I couldn't have planned it better. The 19th Wife is historical fiction, re-telling the life of one of Brigham Young's wives. Under the Banner of Heaven is all too real, and many of the issues that led to the crimes discussed here stemmed from the early days of Mormonism. I recommend both, and read them together if you can.
This engrossing novel has dual narrative threads: one follows Brigham Young's 19th wife and her struggle to end polygamy, the other is about the abuses in modern-day fundamentalist polygamist sects. Highly recommended! (And the ebook is on sale!)
