Sanctum | Madeleine Roux
In this chilling, fast-paced sequel to the New York Times bestselling Asylum, which Publishers Weekly called "a strong YA debut that reveals the enduring impact of buried trauma on a place," three teens must return to the asylum that still haunts their dreams to end the nightmare once and for all. With the page-turning suspense and horror that made Asylum such a standout, and featuring found photographs from real vintage carnivals, Sanctum is a mind-bending reading experience that's perfect for fans of the smash hit Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Dan, Abby, and Jordan remain traumatized by the summer they shared in the Brookline asylum. Much as they'd love to move on, many questions remain, and someone is determined to keep the terror alive, sending the teens photos of an old-timey carnival, with no note and no name. Forsaking their plan never to go back, the teens return to New Hampshire College under the guise of a weekend for prospective students, and there they realize that the carnival from the photos is not only real, it's here on campus, apparently for the first time in many years. Sneaking away from sample classes and college parties, Dan and his friends lead a tour of their ownone through the abandoned houses and hidden places of a surrounding town. Camford is hiding a terrible past, and the truth behind Dan's connection to the asylum's evil warden is more terrifying than Dan ever imagined.

Following the events of their previous summer at New Hampshire College & the towering presence of Brookline asylum, Dan, Abby, & Jordan have remained in touch but can't seem to move on. Dan is persuaded into going to see Felix, another summer school student who has been institutionalised ever since, by Felix's mother & he tells Dan that he has to return to Brookline & gives him the co-ordinates for three addresses there.

OutsmartYourShelf So the three friends find themselves on campus once more, this time as 'prospies' (prospective students). They will need to sneak away from their guides to check out the addresses, but Dan has more problems - namely he has started to see the ghost of a young boy everywhere. Is he literally haunted?

OutsmartYourShelf I actually thought this was an improvement on the first book. It was much pacier, less focus on Dan & Abby's romance, & Jordan was at his best with the sarky comments. There were no big surprises but the story is unfolding nicely & I'm looking forward to the conclusion. 4🌟

3✨ As most seconds books, I didn‘t like this as much as the first one. It still was pretty creepy involving a hypnotist causing the campers to do horror things. It ended on a sadish note too. 😭 #SeriesLove @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

Although I feel the book started a tad bit slow, I soon found myself engrossed in the continuing story of Asylum. Roux does a great job of building up suspense while also adding humor to the characters conversations. I am excited to continue onto the series to see what kinds of twists and turns await!

I don't think I liked this one as much as Asylum but there were several creepy and slightly disturbing parts in it that made me wonder. Very atmospheric, engaging and quick read.

Hoping to get to the next book soon and check another series completed for #seriesread2021

MaleficentBookDragon What did you think of it? 5y
jnichole @MaleficentBookDragon I really liked it. It was a good follow-up to the first book. Once I finish my current book I'll start the third and final book. The first two have been pretty fast paced.

A return to the asylum. Dan, Jordan, and Abby have tried to let go of what happened over the summer, but mysterious pictures of a creepy carnival, nightmares, and a visit with Felix, send them racing back to the campus just in time for Halloween. I love this series full of the paranormal. 1 more book down for the #scarathlon. +Points (5 Related to Halloween) #TeamStoker

BeansPage Sweetie I know you want to rack up extra points and I want you to too LOL that is awesome the way you are scoring this but unfortunately it's just the 5 pts for the related to Halloween book + 1 post pt. I'm excited to look into this book though because we just finished Asylum in my Facebook but club and I thought it was pretty good. I loved all the haunting pictures that are inside the book!!!! 5y
BeansPage And I want to say that you are doing fantastic!!! You have one of the highest scores on the board so far ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 5y
Jadams89 Ok - so just so I‘m clear on points (I reposted this three times editing) so you can earn either 2 points for a book that falls under the theme or 5 for a book related to Halloween? But not both. Sorry I‘ve been trying to stick to things that fall into a single category- otherwise it‘s confusing (case and point) 5y
See All 7 Comments
BeansPage No problem sweetheart. Let me clarify... It's either or. You get either 2 points for the book under the team theme or you get 5 points for the book about Halloween. No double points. 5y
BeansPage I'm so sorry for the confusion 🤪🤪🤪 we are still trying to perfect it ourselves LOL 😂 5y
Jadams89 Gotcha! No problem! Thanks for sorting it out. 5y

A very fun and enjoyable book. I was curious where the author was planning to go with this one as I felt the first novel was quite complete by itself. However I felt this was a plausible story and didn‘t feel tacked on to the original. It was fast paced and had great visuals, which really enhanced the tale. Still not sure where the author goes with the third, but I‘ll be getting into that soon.

I found this book to be a bit better than “Asylum”, even in spite of how the dialogue in the “showdown” scene was a bit cliche. While it‘s not without problems, it was still enjoyable. I rather enjoyed the whole “spooky carnival” subplot, and the twists & turns are quite creative. A breezy read— interesting, but not “scary” (at least for me). Am still eager to read the final book of the trilogy.

This one didn't really hold my interest. I flew through it, but wasn't captivated by the story. I think I liked the mystery/plot more than the first book, but the writing didn't appeal to me.

Sanctum by Madeleine Roux. Trashy YA? Yes (in the sense that the writing isn't Pulitzer Prize level and the story might not be completely air tight). Fun, creepy read? Also yes. I'm a sucker for books with pictures. #guiltypleasure #trashyya #madeleineroux #sanctum #asylum #bookstagram #northerngothic

Roux did a nice job tying in SANCTUM to its predecessor, but to be honest I had a harder time finishing this book than I did ASYLUM. I felt the beginning of the story was not as fast paced, so it took me a bit more time to get into. Once I reached about the 25% mark, however, things started to pick up & I was hooked again. The end of the story also had some really great twists I didn‘t see coming, which is always a plus. Overall, I'd say pick.

This was a pretty good addition to the first book. I enjoyed the first one better. This just seemed to take a while for me to get through. I'll read the next one but I think Poochie and I are going to do something other than YA next. Poochie is exhausted.

(Book 2 of Asylum series)

Someone is determined to keep the terror alive, sending the teens photos of an old-timey carnival, with no note and no name. Forsaking their plan never to go back, the teens return to New Hampshire College under the guise of a weekend for prospective students, and there they realize that the carnival from the photos is on campus, for the first time in many years.

🌟🌟🌟3/5 not good as the first. But still creepy 😊👍

BekahB I agree. I think the plot of the first book was more streamlined and it was definitely creepier. I've also read Catacomb but I still need to read the prequel Escape from Asylum. 8y
PrezBookster I was wondering if the next one was good! 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings I agree, first one was better, but I still gave this a pick because I usually find horror/suspense sequels lacking, but I still enjoyed it, which is so rare. 8y
