Hello, Litsy! It‘s been awhile since I‘ve posted here, but I‘ve been non-stop active on Goodreads recently. I‘ve been thinking about it for awhile, and I have decided to retire my Litsy account. I would love to follow along with some of you on goodreads, so if you would like to drop your URL in the comments, go for it! Here is my link: www.goodreads.com/UnravelingReader

Bookzombie I‘m sorry to see you go, but I know you have not posted much lately. This is my Goodreads info: https://www.goodreads.com/Bookzombie08 7y
Josie @Bookzombie aw you‘re so sweet! I have just been having a hard time keeping up with Litsy. I really love writing reviews, but I hate the character limit on here. Writing longer reviews on goodreads has been very cathartic for me! So I‘ll see you over there :) 7y

Bailedbailed

Had to bail. 2018 is the year of “Don‘t keep reading shit you don‘t like just to finish”. I loved the first book in the series, but this one I just can‘t do. I‘m listening on audio and I am 6 hours in and so bored. The thought of another 10 hours...nope. I just don‘t care enough about the story. Or the writing in this one. A lot of stereotypes, and the female characters are horribly written. Sorry, JKR, just can‘t do it.

[DELETED] 206653737 I have that same attitude this year. Too many books to read to slug through ones that I‘m not enjoying. 7y

This was a reread for me and holy shit, Batman. I don‘t like flying anyway, and this book does not give you the warm and cozies about flying. A supersonic jet traveling at 63k feet becomes compromised, with over 200 passengers on board. This book is hella nasty, thrilling to the core and is full of a hot mess of officials who only think about themselves. DON‘T READ THIS BEFORE FLYING. If you do not heed my warning, best of luck to your nerves.

Sent a kindly worded email (yeah I can be professional, who knew) and received my first ever ARC!!! It seriously couldn‘t be a better one. How am I supposed to wait 5 months for the last book in this trilogy? That, ma‘am, is not right. Thank you so much to Harper Voyager for the review copy! I have a few writer friends on Facebook, and one of them posted that he wrote 2k words for his WIP!!! So I went to comment with a “fuck yeah dude” and some lady, another aspiring writing, actually commented and told him “Talent has nothing to do with it. It‘s all about who you know. I‘m bitter.” BITCH. Just because no one wants to publish your comedic noir poetry doesn‘t mean anything. It pisses me off when unsuccessful people put others down.

I always forget how much I love historical fiction. This one takes place during the yellow fever outbreak in Philly in 1793. The plot was a little slow, but I think I only feel that way because the blurb on the book says “The plot RAGES like the epidemic.” No, sir, it doesn‘t, who pays you? HOWEVER, I still liked the plot. After finishing I think it was paced perfectly. I just hate #bookbait

Book 2 in the Queens of Renthia trilogy. Once again, Durst has salvaged YA and made it immensely enjoyable. No cheese, no unbelievable and irritating romance. A FULLY GROWN WOMAN WITH CHILDREN AS THE MAIN CHARACTER. If you like dark fantasy, I don‘t know why you‘re still reading my review and not picking up this series. Go away.

Leniverse What makes this YA? It seems to have none of the defining traits! 7y

It‘s a good thing ol‘ Charlie isn‘t alive anymore. Otherwise, I would have to get drunk and talk about how it‘s bullshit that he‘s lived so long. People I don‘t even know would hear about it. I liked this one well enough. It‘s one of those books that is not heavy on plot, but heavy on untrustworthy and dislikable characters. Mainly the main character, Mary. She irritated the shit out of me. That tends to happen in books where the main character is SO GORGEOUS ALL MEN DIE. I enjoyed it, though, because it was light and easy.

Josie @BrainyHeroine hmm. Interesting. 7y
Josie @wrenaymuhree OH DUH. I read the first one, and have the second one but forgot all about it! 7y
wrenaymuhree Haha! @josie I have yet to read the 3rd...2nd was definitely more gruesome, but both were smart mysteries nonetheless! 7y
Bookzombie I second the Cormoran Strike series. Also, The Millenium Trilogy. There have been new ones by a new author but I won‘t read them. 🙂 7y
Bookzombie @wrenaymuhree @Josie I think the third was even darker. 7y
Bookzombie I know you like horror and even though I haven‘t finished this trilogy I think you would like it. 7y
Josie @wrenaymuhree I can handle gruesome as long as it doesn‘t involve small babies or animals. You lose me at that point. 7y
Josie @Bookzombie I am dying right now because I have said those exact same words when recommending the Millenium Trilogy 😂😂 literally, verbatim “there have been new ones by a new author, but I WON‘T read them!!” 7y
Josie @Bookzombie no joke, I was looking at that on Overdrive just a few minutes ago!!! We‘re twinning out the ass right now 😂😂😭😭 7y
wrenaymuhree 👍 you should be good, then, @josie. And @Bookzombie YES YES YES the Millennium Trilogy is THE BEST. I always forget how much I love that trilogy...def great for a reread, too! 7y
TheNextBook Ooohh yes! @BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree with The Strike Series too. Have you read The Hunger Games or The Fifth Season series!? Both really good and quick 7y
EvieBee There are only three in this one and it still kills me! 7y
Josie @TheNextBook I have read The Hunger Games, but not The Fifth Season! I‘ll look it up! Thanks girl :) 7y
Josie @EvieBee haha thanks!! I‘ll definitely check it out. Good to know 3 series books do still exist 7y
Bookzombie @Josie if Larsson had written more I would have continued. I like a lot of Jonathan Maberry‘s books if you want to check out more of his. (edited) 7y
Bookzombie @EvieBee That sounds really good. Stacked! 7y
Bookzombie If you like historical fiction, I would say check out Caleb Carr. I only read the second one but really liked it and have the first one on my shelf. Tagging the first one. 7y
Bookzombie Also, there are only four in this series. The author died and I understand the fourth one ends in a cliffhanger. I‘m hoping to get to it this month. (edited) 7y
Bookzombie For detectives, Rick Riordan wrote a series set in Texas. There are 7 books and I think he is done. I‘ve read the first 3 so far. 7y
Bookzombie I know you aren‘t looking for a lengthy series but I think you might like the Pendergast series. Or they have standalones also that you might like, i.e. Thunderhead and The Ice Limit. I would recommend exploring their website. 7y
Bookzombie Okay, one more because I can‘t help myself. YAish series with 5 books. As far as I know, that‘s all there will be. I‘ve read the first 2 and really liked them. 7y
sprainedbrain I was actually 😂 when I read your post. 432 years 😅I also love the Strike series mentioned above, and The Passage series by Justin Cronin is one of my favorite things ever... only 3 books, but they are long books. 7y
BooksAtNight I recently read City of Stairs and absolutely loved it. There are only 3 books in the series. 7y
EvieBee @Bookzombie I am obsessed! Wish more people knew about it. Can‘t wait to hear what you think. 🤓 7y
Josie @Bookzombie YOU ARE A ROCK STAR!!!!! Thank you thank you! I am going to check out all of those!!! 7y
Bookzombie @Josie I hope you like some of them. ☺️ 7y
minkyb Try Lindsay Faye. There are only 3 books set in NY around the time the police force was being created. The main characters are 2 brothers. Loved these. 7y
Josie @minkyb that sounds amazing!! And so different from stuff I normally read. I will definitely check it out, thank you! 7y
Sapphire It is 6 or 7, but Dee Henderson's O'malley series is great. Each one stands on its own, but it is the story of a group of now adult orphans who chose to be a family and each one has a different heroic job. A crisis negotiator, a doctor, a fireman, etc. Their lives and loves are interwoven 7y
Josie @Sapphire that sounds so good!!! I will definitely look into it 7y

The Madman's Daughter | Megan Shepherd

Have you read this book???? I need to know, on a scale of 1 to 5, how gruesome it gets with animals. I don‘t care about people. Just the animals. Help. I don‘t want to keep reading if it gets worse because I just can‘t handle it.

FountainBookstore It gets worse. I love the book and the author, but it is gruesome. 7y
Librarybelle This is good to know...the book has been on my radar, and while I know it‘s based on a classic (I‘ve slated to read it next year, though I‘m having second thoughts), I can‘t stand animal cruelty in books. My number one trigger warning! 7y
Josie @FountainBookstore that‘s a bummer. I‘m really interested in the story aside from the animal cruelty. I‘m trying to decide whether it‘s time to start working through this trigger or if I should just stop!! What do you think @Librarybelle? 7y
See All 16 Comments
Librarybelle @Josie Personally, I have a hard time reading anything where an animal dies. I‘ve read quite a few books that have animal cruelty issues or death of animals, sometimes unexpectedly, and it doesn‘t get easier for me. I loved Water for Elephants, for example, though there were parts of cruelty in there. I think I‘m going to skip this one, but I‘m a bit of a chicken! I‘m the extreme; if I know there are upsetting parts with this trigger, I pass. 7y
Josie @Librarybelle I think what I‘m going to do is continue with it, but with no guarantee that I will finish. I‘d like to see if I can handle it. Like you, I was able to read Water for Elephants without being too upset over it. It‘s just a tough decision to make when you think a book has the potential to be great. 7y
Librarybelle @Josie Good plan, and good luck! You‘re right...tough decision when you think the book has potential to be great. 7y
Josie @Librarybelle I will let you know how far I make it! 7y
TrishB Not for me then either! 7y
FountainBookstore @Josie Hope you make it. It's a good book. Good luck! 7y
Notafraidofwords “I don‘t care about people just the animals “ lol 7y
Josie @Notafraidofwords hahaha it‘s true! I can read about people being tortured and it doesn‘t bother me (obv human torture in real life is a different story) but I can‘t handle animal cruelty at all 7y
rubyslippersreads I can't handle animal cruelty either, but this must have been okay for me because I read it for my YA Book Club and gave it 4 stars on Goodreads. I can't remember specifics, but I do remember being very sad for one "animal" character. 7y
Josie @rubyslippersreads that‘s good to know!! I‘m hoping I can power through it 7y
Josie @Librarybelle @FountainBookstore I can‘t do it, guys. I just got to the part where she lists off all these animals that are going to her dad and I just can‘t. 7y
Librarybelle @Josie Oh no; that would certainly do it for me! At least you tried. I know for sure now I‘m not going to read it, and I think I‘ll revise my list for #litsyclassics . Thanks for letting me know! 7y
Josie @Librarybelle you‘re welcome!! So sorry for the minor spoiler, but I wanted to let you know that it‘s causing me anxiety even before anything bad happens! 7y

Absolutely, positively, definitely loved the shit out of this one. I listened on audio and the narrator was brilliant. Sure, the book had a ton of characters, but what did you expect when you saw the size of it? You‘ve read a King behemoth before, right? It‘s all in the characters. All 29374829292 of them. I only gave this book 3 stars. I really enjoyed the story that Harris was trying to tell. However, his writing was horrible. It took me 2 weeks to read this book, which is a long time for me. I literally had a headache after reading 30 pages. It just felt like he was trying too hard, and I don‘t think he had to. The story itself was enough to make me finish.

My October BOTM! I've read Ready Player One, but the boyfriend wants to read it before the movie comes out!

After taking a month off, I am jumping right back in to my chronological Stephen King reread! This is one of the few books I have never read from King. I am so excited for Shawshank and The Body!! #epicstephenkingreread #book15 #1982

While I don't put too much emphasis on "stars" on Litsy, I rate the shit out of books on Goodreads. I hardly ever give anything 5 stars, but this book made the cut. Maybe it's because it's getting cooler and that makes me happy. Maybe it's because I am a sucker for survival fiction. Either way, I really enjoyed the story of Wolf. Wolf decides to end his life on the mountain, but he soon finds himself lost on the mountain with three women.

I don't know how the author creates the most perfect characters ever, but he has done it again with Britt-Marie Was Here. I loved/hated every character so fully that I became emotionally invested in this small town. Britt-Marie leaves her cheating husband and ends up in the small town of Borg. She's never worked. Never had any children. But she's about to take over the towns soccer team. She learns so much about herself and life.

Good morning/afternoon/evening Littens! I hope everyone is having a great day, or is at least surviving a horrible one (you can do it!!!). Just wanted to share another #currentlyreading with you all. I'm not very far into this one, but I'm definitely intrigued. The novel is written by a man named Wolf. When he was 18, he became stranded on a mountain with 3 women. Alright, my lovely littles of Litsy, I have spammed your feeds over the last 24 hours with all of the books that I read during my Litsy absence (and yes, I am back, it's good to see you all!) Not only did I take a Litsy hiatus, but I also took a break from my #EpicStephenKingReread. Now, im ready to continue it, but I have made the decision to DNF this one. It's actually the reason I took a hiatus in the first place. Continued in comments...

Josie While I love King, I have found that I am not too interested in the horror genre from 1950-1980. Call me a basic bitch, but I just don't have the interest. I have also decided to remove the remaining Bachman books from my reread as well. I am ready to get back into King novels and storytelling! 7y
TheNextBook I had the same issue. And what really sucked with this book was how few of the references I got. So while I was enjoying learning, a lot of what he said went over my head!! 7y
TheNextBook Ok, I know you cut Bachman but if you make it through Desperation read the Regulators because the way he did those two novels is really cool! 7y

This book turned out to be so much better than I expected. The narrator, R, is a zombie who slowly finds himself changing into...something more human? He isn't sure. His journey begins when, instead of eating a young girl, he saves her and takes her home to protect her. The adventure that follows is heart-warming and exciting! I definitely plan on finishing the series.

I LOVED this book. It spins the tale of Gina Royal, who, after a drunk man plows into her garage, learns that her husband is a serial killer (not a spoiler, in the description, don't come at me, bro). The book follows her struggle to run away from all of the people who believe that she helped her husband murder multiple women. Fast paced, chilling and beautifully written, I definitely recommend this one to all thriller fans.

The Good Girl | Mary Kubica

Ughhhhh. I hated this book so much. I finished it, for some reason, but I did not enjoy it. It was boring and made me feel gross half the time. It tries to come off as this thriller/mystery/love story. All I got out of it was racism and Stockholm syndrome. I figured out one of the big reveals pretty early on, it was pretty obvious. The second "big reveal" comes in the epilogue. It actually made the book make less sense. Continued in comments...

Josie This was my first Mary Kubica, and I was not impressed. Is her other stuff better? Should I give it a shot? I really don't want to, based off of this one. The first bad book I have had in months. 7y
Jess7 Yikes! If you didn't like this one than you may not want to. I absolutely loved this book. It is definitely my favorite of her books. She has others I liked too though - pretty baby, don't you cry and her newest one, Every Last Lie (but I haven't read her new one yet). 7y
Josie @Jess7 thank you for being honest!!! Maybe she just isn't for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y

Jess7 You're welcome. I think I like reading about flawed dislikable main characters though - it sounds like you really didn't like the main character and that may have shaped your opinion of the book - if that's the case I would stay away from books by Mary Kubica and Gillian Flynn and maybe even Amy Gentry. You might like Kate Morton? She wrote The Lake House and her characters (while complicated) are more likable. (edited) 7y
Jess7 I would also avoid Jessica Knoll - her main character is beyond unlikeable - the main character in Luckiest Girl Alive was so terrible it made it a little hard to connect with. 7y
Jess7 Have you read Kate Morton before? If not I would highly recommend this one. It's written very different than Mary Kubica, Gillian Flynn, Amy Gentry, Jessica Knoll, Abigail Haas, Gilly Macmillan, etc. I think Kate Morton's writing is BEAUTIFUL. She really takes you there. The characters are well developed and it's engrossing. I've only read this one, but I've heard great things about there other books. 7y
Josie @Jess7 I'll check it out! I am actually a big Gillian Flynn book! But that's the only author you mentioned that I have read 7y
Jess7 Have you read Flynn's book Sharp Objects? It's my favorite, but the characters are very dark and unlikeable. 7y

So, this is a so-so for me because there was just a little bit too much teenage romance. I know, I have a cold heart. It's just not my thing. HOWEVER, if it is your thing, I think you will enjoy this. It's the tale of a teenage girl who is in a coma after a car accident. However, her consciousness is awake and walking around, watching herself and her family.

Lindy This wasn't my thing either. It's been a few years since I read it, but I still remember rolling my eyes when the ghostly spirit-girl admired a nurse's manicure. 7y

My father is obsessed with Scientology. OBSESSED. Not in a "you're in a cult, call your dad" kind of way, but in an interested-about-the-facts kind of way. So, when my bookish soulmate sent me this book for my birthday, I was excited to read it! I found it to be surprising and hilarious. Remini is indeed funny. Scientology is indeed crazy. I recommend this if you like her and if you have an interest in Scientology.

IamIamIam I loved this!!!! It was my first audio book!!! Crazy stuff!! 7y
Josie @IamIamIam seriously! It was really nice to have something to talk about with my dad, who is a little bit of a self centered twat. I love the man, but refuses to take interest in anything that doesn't interest him personally, even if it's something his children love. So this was fun. But now he won't stop and what have I done... 7y
OSChamberlain I‘m like your dad but my obsession is with religion in general. Specifically how people actually believe in it. So this should be an interesting read! 7y

Texreader I'm in the "they must be a cult/crazy" category! Most certainly not a religion. Go Leah! 7y
Josie @OSChamberlain I do think that you will enjoy it. However, I also recommend that you watch Going Clear before or after you read this. I don't think it will matter in which order. I learned so much more about Scientology itself from the documentary than I did this book. Which was fine, but my mind was blown by the documentary. 7y
Josie @Texreader agreed! I love Leah Remini. I grew up watching King of Queens, it was a childhood staple so I just adore her and her crazy personality. 7y
OSChamberlain @Josie oooooh thanks for the rec! Gonna check both out for sure. 7y

Josie @Bakingbookworm I couldn't agree with you more. I love the part of the book where they are all at his house and his crazy ass wants to play hide and seek in his mansion! So so weird. 7y
Bakingbookworm @Josie Agreed. And the amount of power Tom wields within that organization. He's totally smarmy to me now. Ew. 7y
Josie @Bakingbookworm yeah, it's really gross. I refuse to watch his movies. I just can't support him. 7y

Finishing the Percy Jackson series was bittersweet. There is no better feeling than the accomplishment of finishing a series of books. However, I was not ready to say goodbye to the characters and their world. All five books were enjoyable because there is great comic relief in all of them.
