The Good Girl | Mary Kubica
"I've been following her for the past few days.I know where she buys her groceries, where sheworks. I don't know the color of her eyes orwhat they look like when she's scared. But I will."One night, Mia Dennett enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. At first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life. When Colin decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota instead of delivering her to his employers, Mia's mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them. But no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family's world to shatter. An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a propulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems."Kubica's powerful debutwill encourage comparisons to Gone Girl."Publishers Weekly, starred reviewLook for Pretty Baby, the next sensational novel by Mary Kubica. Opinion needed: this is a #BlameItOnLitsy so, I humbly ask for some help here.

I had been getting ready to start this, until I saw Lisa Gardner‘s review on the cover comparing it to Jillian Flynn‘s book. I love Gardner but absolutely abhorred ‘Gone Girl‘ (same goes for ‘Dark Places‘ & ‘Sharp Objects‘ as well🤦🏻‍♀️😬).

My question: What were everyone‘s thoughts on this one? Was it like Flynn‘s or was it a good read?

TheSpineView I have not read this one yet. 😏 9mo
DieAReader @TheSpineView 😉Figured I‘d ask lol 9mo
TheAromaofBooks Oh dear, I haven't read this one yet, either!!! 9mo

So, my iPhone shows me random pictures of myself and it‘s been really fixated on this one. It was my first time out of quarantine after having Covid and I was sitting at a brewery outside reading this book and the waitress looked honestly so jealous and said “I want to just… go somewhere by myself and read a book” #soloyolo “you can.” (I‘m not perturbed in the photo I just couldn‘t see the screen in the sun) lol

I didn‘t expect much,Just wanted a quick thriller. Very solid. Didn‘t disappoint.

25 y.o. Mia is kidnapped. She survives, returns to her family suffering from acute stress disorder, thinks her name is Chloe. Told from 2 timelines &multiple perspectives, her mother & the lead detective seek the truth about how &why she was taken.

I forgot this is a Christmas story & I meant to save this for #Wintergames 😅 but, it‘s book 7 for #BigJuneReadathon

Clwojick Hahahah! I‘m sure you‘ll find some more picks for the Games before December! 😏😆 2y

Couldn‘t put it down (even when brushing my teeth and flat ironing my hair!) Told in 2 timelines: before, after the kidnapping. 4 POVs: Mia (kidnapped woman), Eve (her trophy wife mother), Colin ( the kidnapper) and Gabe, the police investigator. I enjoyed the non linear style and Mia‘s amnesia because we know she gets rescued, but we don‘t how . Moral - don‘t be a horrible, controlling father.

Mia thinks she is having a one-night stand. Instead, she is kidnapped and taken to a cabin deep in the woods while her family, well her mother, desperately waits for her to be found. Her father doesn‘t really seem to care too much about anything but himself. Meanwhile, as Mia and her captor coexist in the cabin, things get a bit interesting. The story is told in multiple narratives and it is also told on differing timelines as well.

IIRC, this was a book that rode the tail of “The Gone Girl” rage a few years ago— so the only expectation I had going in was that there might be an unreliable narrator. I was so busy trying to figure out who was lying, that I didn‘t see the end coming!

Told in “Before” and “After” sections relative to a kidnapping and from different POVs, I might categorize this a Suspense novel rather than a Thriller.

🎧 Tom Taylorson and Andi Arndt nailed it.

As far as the story goes it was pretty interesting (though I didn‘t really care for the parts told from the detective‘s POV). Though a bit predictable at times and not exactly a thriller I did enjoy the story and how it unfolded. The big problem I had with the book is that the tone felt racist at times.

MySharonaK It was also very far from being pro-choice (I felt the author lectured the reader about that) 4y

I don't read a lot of thrillers and the reason being I find the endings often overstretch plausibility or fall flat. Whilst this did not fall flat, I was disappointed in the ending. The flashback and multiple perspectives work really well to grip the reader and keep them guessing. ⭐⭐⭐ and a 1/2.

Mary Kubica's The Good Girl was *great* on audio--I listened on Audible, which featured a full cast reading--as it unraveled the story of Mia's kidnapping by Owen. The book alternates between past and present ("before" and "after") and a series of points of view through different narrators. There's a mystery in what happened when, in who is at fault, but there's a deeper mystery at the center of Mia's family: (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod her sister Grace, her father James, and her mother Eve, all of whom have a different view of who Mia is both before and after the kidnapping. As the story circles around the truth, spiraling toward a center, the tension increases, and I as a reader/listener felt I might truly undersatnd these characters. And then, another truth is revealed. Strong, compelling, and suspenseful thriller. 5y

I blew through this quickly and did like the way the author utilized time shifts and different POVs (tho the detective parts were meh), but overall I found this lackluster and trite. The “twist” was predictable if you‘ve read even a few thrillers or watched a few cop shows. And there was a lot that still made no sense even once we got that reveal. Also, a pet peeve of mine: much of the dialogue sounds nothing like how people actually talk. 2/5 ⭐️

Megabooks She is one of the few authors whose writing I just can‘t stand. (edited) 6y
alisonrose @Megabooks I‘ve read one other book of hers and it was okay, but yeah. She relies too heavily on metaphors that don‘t even fit and has her characters speak in prose rather than normal human dialogue 6y
8little_paws @alisonrose @megabooks also, to be blunt, she's racist. The bad guy here she kept commenting on how dark he was. 6y
See All 8 Comments
alisonrose @8little_paws YES. That really bugged me, how often she mentioned his skin color, and how the detective kept talking about how many POC lived in a certain place and such. 6y
Megabooks @8little_paws I read Don‘t You Cry and Pretty Baby. Those were enough to turn me off! I haven‘t read this one. Honestly, it doesn‘t surprise me that she did this. Plus, using “dark” as a descriptor rather than “black” or “Latino” I‘m sure makes some people feel like they‘re less racist. 🙄😤 6y
alisonrose @Megabooks Yeah, although she also compared his skin to like, whale blubber or something???? Like what white nonsense is that? 6y
8little_paws Yes that's right she tied race and poverty together closely. I read this like 4 years ago and still cannot get over how many people gave her racial comments a pass 6y
alisonrose @8little_paws Seriously. After this one I‘m not interested in reading more from her. 😒 6y

You know how sometimes you read a line in a book and you just get the feeling it‘s the author speaking through their character? I could be wrong, and I hope I am, because this is some anti-choice bullshit, the definitive statement that of course she will feel nothing but guilt “for the rest of her life.” What next, is she gonna insist that getting an abortion will also give her cancer? 😠😠😠

We get about twenty cans. Chicken noodle, tomato soup, mandarin oranges, cream corn. The kind of food you find in a survival kit. The girl realizes this and says, “Maybe you don‘t plan to kill me right away,” and I say no, not until we‘ve eaten the cream corn.

[Okay, that made me snicker.]

I was not a huge fan of the way this book was organized. You find out the end result really early on, and then the rest of the book is filling in the details from the middle. Overall, it was a good book. A story about a young woman that is abducted, The Good Girl is told from three different perspectives, the kidnapper, the victim‘s mother, and the detective in charge of the case.
