I read this one solely for the purpose of meeting the Book to Movie prompt for #Booked2019 because it was "available now" through Overdrive. I was definitely pleasantly surprised how much I ended up enjoying it. Maybe I should watch the movie now ?

I'm giving this one a so-so. The idea was a good one, but I found the writing to be lacking. It was off to a good start, but the end was pretty messy and jumbled. Definitely had some plot holes.
My main issue with it was his overuse of analogies. I understand the use of them as a writing tool for "supernatural" concepts, but damn Bennett, don't you have anything else in that toolbox?

I picked this one based on the cover on Overdrive to finish up the spring subjects of #booked2019, so I went in with no knowledge of what it was about. Definitely an odd read. There were some things I liked about it, but the subject matter was pretty unusual.
Spoiler in comments with my thoughts.
@Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Canndor I didn't like that after YEARS of her outbursts that her dad never thought to mention that his father could smell people in the same way or to tell her about why he stays out of hospitals. The ending was too far out there for me too, the tasting people's emotions in their food and smelling it is one thing, but her brother turning into furniture? I don't get it. 6y

This memior was my #Booked2019 pick for #indigenousauthor.
There were things I enjoyed about it, mainly the depth and rawness of her emotion.
I am giving it a so-so because it was pretty hard to follow, jumping around in time. It is written like a letter to a past love and took some liberties with shared knowledge that left me feeling like I was missing something or not understanding fully.

It took me a while to get around to finishing this one, not bc of a problem with the book. I just get like that sometimes, but I was determined to do so tonight.
The story was gripping, but I hated the characters, especially Christopher. I found the ending to be unsatisfying too, maybe she intends for there to be a sequel?

Mehso-so

Completed my #CliFi #Booked2019 pick. Overall I gave it a so-so.
Was expecting more cli-fi and less cult-fi (?). I enjoyed the damaged world Watkins created, but I could have done without some of the odd erotic scenes. To me they were more off-putting than adding to the story.
I found some of the writing style grating also, like the or, or, or/she would, she would, she would sections.
@Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Cinfhen I agree, this book was very erratic ~ I found certain elements (like the opening chapters about the devastated landscape and squatting in Beverly Hills mansions) really well done but the second half of the book was just bizarro. I think she‘s a talented writer but maybe I‘m just not sophisticated enough to appreciate all of her ideas. 6y
Cinfhen That scene with his haram was really uncomfortable 6y
Canndor @Cinfhen I agree. I can appreciate her writing talent, but I wish the book had been more focused on the devastated landscape, I really enjoyed those parts but there was too little of that and too much of the weird stuff. And yes to your spoiler post. Lol that scene was a little too much. 6y

My first blurb!

I always call YA lit my guilty pleasure, but honestly I don't feel very guilty about it. ?

This book had all of my favorite things about YA lit. Namely, addressing the subjects often ignored in "adult lit": depression, suicidal thoughts, the struggles of being lbgt, codependent relationships...
Overall I loved this book, but I did not care for the reader perspective changes between characters. Not a deal breaker, but not for me.
