The Guineveres
The Guineveres: A Novel | Sarah Domet
103 posts | 55 read | 1 reading | 152 to read
A first novel whose tone echoes that of Jeffrey Eugenidess The Virgin Suicides...This phenomenal, character-driven story is mesmerizing. --Library Journal (starred review) To four girls who have nothing, their friendship is everything: they are each others confidants, teachers, and family. The girls are all named GuinevereVere, Gwen, Ginny, and Winand it is the surprise of finding another Guinevere in their midst that first brings them together. They come to The Sisters of the Supreme Adoration convent by different paths, delivered by their families, each with her own complicated, heartbreaking story that she safeguards. Gwen is all Hollywood glamour and swagger; Ginny is a budding artiste with a sentiment to match; Wins tough bravado isnt even skin deep; and Vere is the only one who seems to be a believer, trying to hold onto her faith that her mother will one day return for her. However, the girls are more than the sum of their parts and together they form the all powerful and confident The Guineveres, bound by the extraordinary coincidence of their names and girded against the indignities of their plain, sequestered lives. The nuns who raise them teach the Guineveres that faith is about waiting: waiting for the mail, for weekly wash day, for a miracle, or for the day they turn eighteen and are allowed to leave the convent. But the Guineveres grow tired of waiting. And so when four comatose soldiers from the War looming outside arrive at the convent, the girls realize that these men may hold their ticket out. In prose shot through with beauty, Sarah Domet weaves together the Guineveres past, present, and future, as well as the stories of the female saints they were raised on, to capture the wonder and tumult of girlhood and the magical thinking of young women as they cross over to adulthood.

I wanted to love this, but my feelings are mixed. I appreciated the convent boarding school setting, how the story follows the liturgical year and the tales of female saints peppered throughout. Unfortunately, I didn‘t enjoy the writing style. Domet is definitely a more is more kind of writer. So many similes! Felt unnecessarily descriptive and drawn-out. #NunLit

Tamra I‘ve not been drawn to this one - doesn‘t sound like I‘m missing much. 1y
jlhammar @Tamra Yeah, can't say I'd recommend it. In addition to the writing, I found some other things to be problematic. The time and place is never given and so things don't add up and everything feels off. The mass details clearly are post-Vatican II, but everything else feels more 40s/50s. That vagueness didn't work for me. And a storyline involving a comatose soldier (and what is done to him) is really disturbing, but not treated as such. 1y

#NovemberNarrative

I don‘t remember all that much about this book that I read in 2016 except that four girls named Guinevere are “dumped” at a convent & the stories of the female saints they learn about are featured in it. Seems a good pick for today‘s #SaintsDay prompt.

The picture is from a historic church in Montreal, taken when I went there for work in 2014.

#ThankfulThoughts

Meant to post this yesterday & got distracted. I read this book about 4 years ago & I don‘t remember much about it beyond there being 4 girls named Guinevere, all dumped at a convent by their respective parents & them taking care of comatose soldiers. However, I do recall there were stories of the Catholic #Saints throughout the book.
(Also I still really love this cover!) ❤️

Eggs Great post! I see this is on my TBR stack-maybe I should try reading it 4y

Between a pick and a so-so
Four girls, all named Guinevere, form a bond after they‘re dumped at a convent orphanage by their parents. Interesting coming-of-age story, but I could never pinpoint the time period and the ending was somewhat unbelievable.
Audiobook was well done!

I finished my last selection for this season of #booked2018. Four girls named Guinevere end up in an orphanage run by a covent. Each of them has their own story of loss and abandonment and, desperate for love and a sense of belonging, they cling to each other as they keep their secrets and plot how to escape the convent. The writing is lovely but the pace is slow. Still I ended up loving it. #friendship

✨I think #theguineveres by #sarahdomet sounds so unique. I can‘t wait to read this one eventually. I have so many books on my bookshelf that I own or that I borrowed that I still haven‘t read yet. 😂😂 I need two whole days out of the week to dedicate only to reading or something! Lol! QOTD: What do you do that helps make more time for reading??✨

librarypoweruser I put reading on my "to do" list every day so it makes me serious about making time and checking it off :) it's been helping! 7y
Kaye I listen to audiobooks at times when I can‘t read a physical book, like driving, laundry, you know...all the boring stuff ? You can get some extra reading time in that way. 7y
jpmcwisemorgan I do what @librarypoweruser does. It helps that I commute by bus, though. And I do what @Kaye does too. I made a decision about 8 years ago to read more because while I was in school I rarely read unless it was for school. About 2 years ago I started reading almost every day. It‘s my me-time. 7y

So I got a little sidetracked with the photo here but it IS a book about teenage girls trying to escape a convent so it works, right? 🤷‍♀️ Their families have abandoned them to the convent, a War is happening, and the girls are praying fervently that four comatose, unknown soldiers will be their way out. I don‘t think this book will stay with me in a deep way but it‘s deft, funny and dark- always a good combo for me.

The story of 4 Guineveres who were dropped off by their families at a convent during different points of their lives. United by their names the four girls have a close bond as they navigate life in a convent. The main story covers a year of their life that changed everything. Lots of good quotes in this book and I appreciated the Catholic focus.
