A story of a convent and the community surrounding them told through letters from Sister B. It was delightful to see how much prayer actually worked for all the travails experienced by the nuns. If only that worked for all of us! It was sweet to watch how they relied on each other and continually learned new things in order to navigate fundraising for their convent. #NunLit

For the most part, this meditative book of essays provoked reflective responses in me as evidenced by all the sticky notes that adorn the book‘s pages.I especially enjoyed all her musings on poetry& language, her role as a poet & the poetics in Benedictine chants, songs, prayers, & in the Bible. But for about the last 90 pages, I confessed I skimmed. I‘m not sure if it was just because became the book became repetitive or that I lost interest.#nunlit

TheBookHippie I lost interest in the end and sent it back to the library 😵‍💫🤪 6d
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie I totally get it. It could have ended in the middle. 6d

kspenmoll @Librarybelle In the first third or so when she writes of her life with monks & poetry, it‘s lovely. The book was published in 1996, quite a while ago now. I had to remind myself of that. I am glad I read it,but it needed to be shorter & lost my interest. It is worth reading. (edited) 6d
kspenmoll @Sparklemn I made it in 1998! 6d

My garden last summer gone to the wild- weeds as tall as the railings. My “ratty little garden.” I could not give it attention because of shoulder surgery. Life forced me to let go, let the garden reclaim itself.
“The garden I‘ve grown into…seems more a kind of Purgatory, but I love it. It‘s a rattly little garden, not much at all. But I can call it mine”(271).

Bookwormjillk That's my favorite kind of garden to be honest! 1w

AnnCrystal Weeds are just as beautiful! We sometimes allow ours to grow a bit unkept for the wildlife, then tackle before 4th of July due to neighborhood unlawful fireworks. Gorgeous 😍💝. 1w

#ReverendMotherMystery
1925 heavily Catholic Cork,Ireland.
Eileen has reneged her previous allegiance to the IRA cause when she perceived that its Machiavelli leaders‘ violence increasingly escalated as they enthusiastically embraced the idea that “the end justifies the means.” But she has not left behind Rev.Mother, nor her childhood friend Inspector Patrick. When a novice is found dead in a convent shed, both join in to help Rev. Mother solve 🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 the crime. Was her death connected to politics? To her father‘s recent death by similar means? Or to some hidden evil? #nunlit (edited) 1w

My favorite thing about my 3x3 grid is mapping out the back side of my #indexcard stack to determine who gets the tag. Brooke, turns out this one is for you!

marleed @eeclayton I basically hibernate during Kansas City‘s two Uary months so good books are a must! 2w
marleed @AvidReader25 I keep thinking about it. I just really liked the delivery of her 5th decade experiences. 2w
marleed @TheBookHippie I‘m really glad I read this. It wasn‘t an easy read for me but I liked how it centered itself on faith without being current-day American Christian Nationalist. I likely would have skipped the book had it been published post-2016 for fear of that narrative. 2w
TheBookHippie @marleed #nunlit section and I was wary but like you saw the pub date and figure it was probably okay. I checked the publisher too 😅😂. I think it‘s important to read different faiths than mine as long as it‘s not agenda propaganda this fit that pretty well. 2w

Beautiful Mystery | Louise Penny

From my nightly read. #poetryandpsalms #nunlit #nunlitquarterly
The author attended the Benedictines‘ chanting of the Divine Office, which often included psalms. This brings to mind Louise Penny‘s book,The Beautiful Mystery.
