Quiet as a Nun | Antonia Fraser

Pickpick

Finally had a few hours to devote to this short mystery. I liked it and look forward to watching the adaptation that aired in 1978 as part of the ITV Armchair Thriller series (and later on PBS Mystery!). YouTube link in comments below.

Suet624 Shoot. I keep forgetting to see whether I can find these books. 2mo
Librarybelle Thanks for the link! 2mo
kspenmoll Thanks for the link! I enjoyed this one too- quite surprised with the end! The movie was fun- old time effects-dramatic music, sounds that go bump… (edited) 2mo

As we know from the movies, sometimes a young lady will never be a nun. I‘m rooting for Hermione and Alphonsus.

I really enjoyed this book and plan to read the sequel. And I would love to taste some of the Shoppe cookies.

Sr. Boniface is a gem and I loved her letters to Sr Emelda. A Pinterest search on orange peel boxes and I‘m compelled to make one! Artists have crafted marvelous little peg nuns and even a few priests. But alas, the Pinterest pipe cleaner people exist without perforce of clergy. …And can someone give me a ⭐️ if I correctly used perforce in a sentence. 🤣🤣

#NunLitQuarterly These books have been so interesting to read. Thank you @jlhammar

jlhammar Love the photo! I was also curious about those orange peel boxes. You remind me that I want to order the sequel 5mo
AnnCrystal Lovely, the way you've arranged this book pic 🤩👍💝. (edited) 5mo
Suet624 Darn! I‘m still on a waitlist!! 5mo

marleed @jlhammar @AnnCrystal Thanks! It‘s so much fun to pull those little nuns together - and I forgot one! The nun with the mic was a 1st communion gift oh so long ago - I can‘t believe she has survived all this time! …I have the sequel added to my TBR, as well. 5mo
marleed @Suet624 My Libby libraries didn‘t carry this nor did my mortar library have a physical copy. I ended up purchasing the kindle e-book. 5mo
AnnCrystal @marleed I love these little figures, they are just too cute 🤩👍💝. 5mo
rubyslippersreads I love your little ceramic convent. ❤️ 5mo
marleed @AnnCrystal @rubyslippersreads Oh thank you! Each one of these figures has a family history to it. I became the steward of that sweet angel last summer. My eldest sister passed in 2021 and my BIL has a gf now (good for him). I was home and at their house last summer and my sister‘s life story remains in every corner so I picked out this beauty. Then on the bottom Monica had written her name in likely 6-yr old writing. I saved the angel! 5mo
AnnCrystal 🫂🙏💝 how lovely a keepsake 😘💕💝. They are all Sweet Keepsakes 💝. (edited) 5mo

What a charming read! An epistolary novel, the reader discovers the good and the bad in a year at St. Winifreda‘s convent. I laughed out loud a few times and think this would make a wonderful TV series. A great pick for #NunLitQuarterly !

jlhammar I agree, this would make a great TV series! So glad you enjoyed it. 5mo
Suet624 Jeepers! I‘m still on a library waitlist 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5mo
Librarybelle @jlhammar I see that this is the first in a series. I may have to add the others to my tbr list! 5mo

An epistolary novel, concerning the Sisters of St.Winifreda and their struggles with a crumbling bell tower, a rat infestation, and a leaking roof with no money to pay for repairs. Through kindness, prayer, ingenuity, good neighbors and some luck, the Sisters build a community while rebuilding their convent. A cheering and uplifting tale.

jlhammar Oh my gosh, those clothes-pegs! 😂 Love it. Wonderful review! 5mo
charl08 Always here for the #nunlit. Stacked 5mo
Aimeesue @marleed Flying nuns are the best kind, imo! 😂 5mo
Aimeesue @Deblovestoread Aren‘t they great? I pulled the image from a Catholic kids website. Who knew there was such a thing? 5mo
Aimeesue @quietjenn 🖤🖤🖤 5mo
Aimeesue @kspenmoll Thanks! Borrowed the pic, but I do love them. I‘ve made wooden soldier ornaments from this kind of clothes peg, but nuns would be fun to try too! 5mo
Aimeesue @jlhammar Aren‘t they great? Thanks! 5mo
Aimeesue @charl08 I think I love the #nunlit because a convent is one of the spaces in which women were “allowed” to manage and run things in days of yore. I love seeing how they overcome all the obstacles that are deliberately thrown in their way. 5mo

So nice and heartwarming. I‘ll be reaching for the sequel, The Power of Cake, when I next need my spirits lifted.

This light and warm-hearted book was quite the change from The Forever War! The story of a group of nuns trying to save their old convent from being sold is told in a series of letters from Sister Boniface to another nun, Sister Emelda, who is working in South America. It‘s a lovely book and was just what I needed. #NunLitQuarterly

jlhammar Oh good, I could use a lovely read. Excited to get started! Did you see that there is a sequel? 6mo
KathyWheeler @jlhammar No, I didn‘t. Thanks! 6mo
