Bottom's Dream
Bottom's Dream | Arno Schmidt
9 posts | 1 read | 19 to read
"I have had a dream past the wit of man to say what dream it was," says Bottom. "I have had a dream, and I wrote a Big Book about it," Arno Schmidt might have said. Schmidt's rare vision is a journey into many literary worlds. First and foremost it is about Edgar Allan Poe, or perhaps it is language itself that plays that lead role; and it is certainly about sex in its many Freudian disguises, but about love as well, whether fragile and unfulfilled or crude and wedded. As befits a dream upon a heath populated by elemental spirits, the shapes and figures are protean, its protagonists suddenly transformed into trees, horses, and demigods. In a single day, from one midsummer dawn to a fiery second, Dan and Franzisca, Wilma and Paul explore the labyrinths of literary creation and of their own dreams and desires. Since its publication in 1970 Zettel's Traum/Bottom's Dream has been regarded as Arno Schimdt's magnum opus, as the definitive work of a titan of postwar German literature. Readers are now invited to explore its verbally provocative landscape in an English translation by John E. Woods.

Here I am perched on my #bookmail , Bottom's Dream. It came in a huge box so I had to rest, or as we say down south: sit a spell. I'm not really sure what I've gotten myself into. I like books that challenge me and I like mid 20th century modernism, but EGADS! Whew! Maybe I'll just use it to reach my books on the top shelves😄. #blameitonlitsy and in this case @MrBook & @BookBabe and @shawnmooney

quirkyreader Time to get one of those display cases that the Audubon bird books are kept in. 8y
LeahBergen 😂😂 Great pic! 8y
shawnmooney Great! The more I researched the book, the more I decided it wasn't going to be for me. Maybe your review will change my mind yet again! Have fun! 8y

#Coale is loving "Bottom's Dream" ?! He can use it as a bed, or he can hide behind it when playful. And it won't move around on him like a flimsy cardboard box since it weight only a pound less than him ?. He likes its smell too, but who could blame him for loving a book's scent ?.

Cupofjo I love seeing the adventures of #coale! 8y
Kathrin I can't wait for your review on this, but I assume it's going to be a while! 😂 8y
Tanner Smart kitty! 8y

That could be quite interesting ???! @Tcip Not yet, I'm waiting for the next extended weekend to get through this behemoth ??????. This is a whopper, for sure ☺️. @Dragon Thanks ☺️??! 8y

No, I didn't buy it, but at least I saw it in real life! Flipped through it randomly. What a hoot! I'd love to spend a day at least trying to get the gist of the "story".

@BookBabe already posted about our incredible #bookmail from yesterday, but she showed this 14 lb. behemoth from its side, here it is head-on. 1 of only 2,000 printed. 1,500 pages & 1,325,000 words (twice as many as "War & Peace")! The UPS guy had a heck of a time getting it from his truck to the house, lol. We need a bookstand for this puppy! ?????? So, what do you think?!

acc5446 good grief!! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage That is a book with a capital Booyah. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 8y

LukkiAnn Please swear you will read all 1500 pages and 1,5 million words😈😈😈 8y

Leelee.reads "It shall be called 'Bottom's Dream'...because it hath no bottom..." The perfect title for the longest book ever! Love it! 8y
meggofrank Holy cows 8y
DeborahSmall I'm tempted...description @Litsy states 300 pages, is this a different book or did they just get it wrong 🙃 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @kmdartist @MrBook I think lifting it up counts as weight lift! 💪🏻 8y
moranadatter @erzascarletbookgasm It's heavier than the free weights I use. 8y
Theresa @DeborahSmall I was just about to say the same thing. Could just be REALLY large print in @MrBook 's version. 😂 8y
LauraBeth I want to see this listed in your October reads recap 😂 8y
brendanmleonard Holy cow! That's crazy (and amazing). And crazy. 8y
HotCocoaReads All I can say is wow!!! I'm a slow reader and am overwhelmed by the idea of this book. I do have a book with the same name "Bottom's Dream" by John Updike. I'll probably have to stick with that. But I am intrigued by yours! 8y
MrBook @Leelee.reads 😊👌🏻🙌🏻! @meggofrank ☺️😉👍🏻! @DeborahSmall @Theresa Did the glasses give it away 😂? There's a 3-volume set, so maybe they used one of those volume instead. Yeah, this is 1,495 pages, plus some blanks, lol. @erzascarletbookgasm @kmdartist Aye, that 😂👍🏻! @Crystallinegirl It'll be a heck of a go 😁👍🏻! @LauraBeth Of course you would 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! @brendanmleonard 😊👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! @HotCocoaReads 😁👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! 8y

PurpleyPumpkin Wow, impressive!👌🏼 8y
Alma That's what I call a birthday present! 🎁 8y
Adam_Z You're not really going to read more than a few pages of that, are you? More of a conversation piece, is it not? 8y
Qemorio Happy early birthday! 🎉 8y
JPeterson You know what an early birthday present means? The you'll just need to buy more books for presents on the actual day(s). 😉😄 8y
quirkyreader Now you just need to find a super cool two seated reading desk, so you can booth read a book together. 8y
MrBook @Hornsby78 About 14 lbs 😂. We watched the UPS guy pick it up and even he grunted, then huffed and puffed walking it over to the house, poor guy. And he's used to this stuff!!! @Lynnsoprano 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 A barrel of Jack Daniels!!! How's that sound 😆😉👍🏻? @Adam_Z 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It has crazy prose. I think the translator left the German punctuations et al., and just translated the words. It'll be interesting. @JPeterson 😆😁🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 8y
Gayan What sort of crispy tater tots go with it? 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled This is crazy! Oh, how I love you guys. 8y

My  Watch ⌚️ tapped me on the wrist to tell me some bookish news it thought I would like. 😁👍🏻 Does it know me, or what? 📚

FYI, this novel is 1.3 MILLION words, weighs over 13 pounds, has a 14-inch spine, is more than double the length of Atlas Shrugged, and is NOT available as an ebook. 😱

Tempted to order it on Amazon, but my mailman would never forgive me. 😬

BookBabe @MrBook, you say you like big books...do you accept the challenge? 😉 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Depends on what it's about.... 8y
KafkaKitten Whoa! I'm tempted... 🤔 8y

barry 14 INCHES??!! 8y
barry That must be the height not the spine width. 8y
I-read-and-eat Very curious to know what this book is about 8y
Aseleener Wow. 8y
DeeLew 😳 8y
Alfoster Yikes!! Gonna have to work out more if I want to read that one! 8y
PatriciaU So this is a translation of a book published in 1970? Anyone read the original German? 8y
ApoptyGina69 Is this house we toyed with the idea of ordering it, but really...just no. Especially after reading a few lines published in the WSJ this morning. 8y
MrBook 😳 *blink blink* 😱.... We. Are. Ordering. This. Yesterday!!!!!!! 8y
OrangeMooseReads Interesting 8y
Adam_Z After reading the WSJ article, I think it looks like more of a conversation piece to sit on a coffee table than something anyone is likely to enjoy reading. 8y
IndyHannaJones What book is it? 8y
IndyHannaJones Nvm haha 8y
Yournewfriendsams Too perfect 👌🏽 8y
KellyKate This sounds interesting! 8y
KVanRead Blogger in the WSJ article says 5pgs/day too ambitious 😱http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-seasons-biggest-novel-has-1-3-million-words-and-outweighs-a-bowling-ball-1474642359 8y
LauraBeth ❤️ this!! 8y
Horrortorte Good luck to every brave soul who dares to try to read "Zettels Traum". I've never met or heard from anyone who mastered this wordy monster, not even in its original German language. But I guess Don Quixote would love it ? 8y
BookBabe Well, I bought it for @MrBook and me for our birthdays, so we'll see how we fare! 🙈 8y
Rizz @BookBabe hmm, the @Litsy notation on this book, or the information on this book says it only has 300 pages? That doesn't seem right, or am I not reading this right? 🤔😆😅 8y
MrBook ☺️ 8y

OSChamberlain I just got a little turned on. @BookishFeminist 8y
shawnmooney @bookishfeminist @OSChamberlain I'm completely off my rocker, but I haven't been able to get this book out of my mind since posting about it. Which means I'll probably have to buy it more or less immediately once it becomes available. And read it WHEN? Lol 8y
OSChamberlain Lol that won't matter as long as you have it in your possession and can get to it eventually! 8y
