I really wanted to love this book, but for whatever reason it didn‘t strike a cord with me. Maybe I‘m not in the right frame of mind. But it looks like I borrowed this book from the library once before and returned it. And I‘m doing that again. If you read this and you love the book, that‘s fabulous.

Another 5 ⭐️ read with a lady MC of the octogenarian set. A love letter to NYC in some sense, a trip through the history of advertising, and to some extent poetry, this was a wonderful read. This was such a sweet book. Lillian Boxfish is 85 years old and takes a walk through New York City on New Year‘s Eve 1984. The story is about the people she meets on her walk but also includes stories about her life as she remembers them.

I enjoyed this novel loosely based on a real person. The protragonist is an 84-year old woman who looks back on her life all the while walking over 10 miles on New Year's Eve in 1984.

This week I've been finishing up Holiday reads. I've a couple more Library Holds that if they come in soon, I'll go ahead and read. But otherwise with Lillian I'm shifting into Winter not Christmas.

Starting listening on NYE and finished in print last night. Delightful to revisit Lillian. 🎄➡️❄️

I would happily read a book about Lillian's aunt Sadie.

I have two more holiday books I hope to finish for the end of #WinterGames and I went to the library today to be ready for #RandomClassic chapter a day hosted by @TheAromaOfBooks and #NancyDrewBR 15th of the month discussion hosted by @LibraryBelle The tagged book has been on my New Year‘s TBR for a couple years; rec by Modern Mrs. Darcy. I started it today while running errands, and like it so far.

I really enjoyed her story and learning some NYC history along the way. But there was something about the writing that I can't quite put my finger on that makes me only like it and not love it as a whole.

The best scene, hands down, was the coat swap!

I absolutely love the character, Lillian Boxfish! What a perfectly quaint little old lady she is! For this reason, I also really liked this book. Lillian was so bold, energetic and unapologetic! She had a great philosophy on life that really got me thinking. I hope I age to be just like her in my golden years. I recommend this book.

Lillian is in her 80s and has lived in New York for 60 years. she was once the highest paid female advertising writer, until marriage, motherhood and a mental breakdown ended her career early. on New Year‘s Eve, she walks 10 miles through the city, interacting with people from all walks of life, thinking about her past and the present. a bit slow and didn‘t go where I was hoping it would but ultimately, it‘s a love letter to big city life.

It was... Okay. I was interested to read in the acknowledgements that Lillian was based on a real advertising woman, because that was the part of the book that I liked least. Some parts of the book were really charming and others were just so-so. I know all these protofeminist novels are very in right now. I consider myself a feminist so I don't really know what it is I generally don't like about them. Anyway, that's my #unpopularopinion. ⭐⭐⭐

I decided to read this book which I found someone posted about for the curious covers tag, and whilst I loved the idea of the plot, it just didn‘t quite reach the place I expected it to go. I would of preferred hearing more about the stories of the people Lily met through the night. There were some but I wanted more like that. This was in no way a bad read though

Lillian reminded me so much of my Gram—magical, complicated, rebellious and a poetry lover. They would be about the same age, and both have a tremendous love for New York City. So my whole experience with this book was colored by that connection. I loved it so much, even though it meandered (seemingly) aimlessly across decades, experiences and city blocks.

Today‘s Dollar Tree #bookhaul starts with #blameitonLitsy - the tagged book isn‘t something I‘d usually pick, but after all the love for it here I figured I could spend $1 to try it out.
