The Ice Princess: A Novel | Camilla Läckberg, Steven T. Murray
96 posts | 127 read | 63 to read
In this electrifying tale of suspense from an international crime-writing sensation, a grisly death exposes the dark heart of a Scandinavian seaside village. Erica Falck returns to her tiny, remote hometown of Fjällbacka, Sweden, after her parents’ deaths only to encounter another tragedy: the suicide of her childhood best friend, Alex. It’s Erica herself who finds Alex’s body—suspended in a bathtub of frozen water, her wrists slashed. Erica is bewildered: Why would a beautiful woman who had it all take her own life? Teaming up with police detective Patrik Hedström, Erica begins to uncover shocking events from Alex’s childhood. As one horrifying fact after another comes to light, Erica and Patrik’s curiosity gives way to obsession—and their flirtation grows into uncontrollable attraction. But it’s not long before one thing becomes very clear: a deadly secret is at stake, and there’s someone out there who will do anything—even commit murder—to protect it. Fans of Scandinavian greats Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell will devour Camilla Läckberg’s penetrating portrait of human nature at its darkest.

The first in a series, I liked this story about a woman investigating the death of a former best friend. The small town setting in Sweden is interesting and while many of the characters are familiar types, there are juicy secrets to uncover and a satisfying ending that leaves you marveling at the terrible reasons people do even worse things. Pacing is slow but the translation is good. I‘ll probably continue with the series at some point.

Characters felt super realistic!

I loved the setting that was a small island. Crime solving was interesting to follow - new information & details were slowly revealed. This was pretty cozy, even though some events were disturbing.

Some things were possible to guess quite early but this still kept you guessing.

Swedish noir. At least I'm pretty sure it was Sweden. They mention Ikea a lot. Lol. For once, I liked both the writer and the detective in this (such a popular combo) and the mystery wasn't easy to figure out. Per usual, it was a small town with hidden secrets. Probably gonna take a break from all the winter murder now. At least until next week when I read Five! 26 pts #HolidayRead #MerryReaders #WinterGames2020

Based on Litsy ratings, I have an #unpopularopinion on this one, except I liked it. 🤣 It‘s not the over-the-top graphically violent novel typical of the Nordic noir I‘ve tried (like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Rather it‘s more the small town murder with characters who have dark secrets like you get with Ann Cleeves procedurals. Well written, but I do rather feel like I need a shower. TW in spoiler comment.

DGRachel TW for domestic violence on page and child sexual abuse mentioned as history, but not detailed on page. 4y

Set in #Sweden a woman revisits her past when her childhood friend is murdered. Together with her new lover (also a childhood friend who is now a police officer) they start digging into the past. Lots of characters, scenery, snow, cooking, and plot make this a typical Nordic Noir but not the best one in the genre. Enjoyable though.

#BFC28 week 3 check-in. This week I realized that I need to focus on one habit and go bigger on it. So I walked just over 19 miles this week. I did 2 of my workouts. I dropped the smoothies because that obviously wasn't something I wanted to do right now. I listened to 7 books. Walking has been a good habit to develop.

#10) Finally finished this book as part of #ReadingEurope #Iceland. It turned out to be an alright book. I did have trouble getting through the middle, but it picked back up about 2/3 of the way through. There were a few bits that I could guess, but also some that kept me perplexed, so overall enjoyable. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

And this is where Fjällbacka and Tanumshede are on the map.

The grey/blue line is the border to Norway.

I actually felt a little bad, when Erica talked about summer tourists buying up the houses and turning them into summer cabins when I saw how close to the border the city was. The book was first published in 2003, and I know that in this period a lot of Norwegians was buying up houses along this coast down to Lysekil.

Erica Falck returns home to Fjallbacka Sweden. Her friend Alex has committed suicide. She teams up with Patrik Hedstrom, police, to find the truth. Old family secrets surface and someone committed murder to protect them. Nice debut. Book was slow in the beginning. Ending was a surprise. Interesting characters. Plot twists. Looking forward to book 2. Recommend to those who love mystery thrillers. #Murder2020 4/4

EadieB In The Ice Princess, Fjallbacka seems like a peaceful, beautiful small town which is remote, quiet and calm – but like the water, there are currents underneath the smooth surface. The book had three psychopaths. Lucas, bully and wife beater, Nils and Jan were two psychopaths in one family. Can't always tell a town by it's cover! Looking forward to the next book! (edited) 5y
AnneCecilie I thought the beginning was slow and it wasn‘t until 50 - 60 p in that I got invested in the story. Fjällbacka seems like a nice place to live, and it‘s hard to believe that anything bad can happen there. I‘m looking forward to the next book. 5y
Butterfinger Here is where I want to vent. How dare these people put fear of gossip over their 10 year old children. It makes me furious. These children had to take care of the problem themselves because Jan, like @EadieB says, a psychopath. The family didn't even offer counseling. She was 10 and going through pregnancy 😡😠. I wanted to slap those selfish parents. 5y

EadieB I think Anna will wise up and leave Lucas as he is too controlling. 5y
AnneCecilie I‘m not sure. Women who are beaten and abused, tend to take some time leaving their partner. This seems to be the first time Anna has left, and they tend to go back. I hope Lucas hurting their oldest kid and breaking her arm, was what was needed for Anna to leave him for good. I kept expecting him to show up in Fjällbacka, he seemed like a guy that would to that. 5y
Butterfinger Can't answer. I know. But I will say I was proud that Anna went back to Erica. She definitely couldn't deal with it herself. 5y

One of the better #NordicNoir that I‘ve read... I haven‘t read many because I feel like they can be really drawn out. The chapters were ridiculously long and I know I saw someone else say something about it. Good read!

Crazeedi It was definitely worth reading 5y
gradcat @eanderson I think you‘re absolutely right about Scandinavian mystery/suspense authors...in that vein, the books in one of earlier mystery series, by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö—the Martin Beck series—have very long, drawn-out sequences. But I‘m glad you liked this one. I thought it was good, too. â™¥ï¸ (edited) 5y

Another great start to a series! Lovely little town, great characters I want to get to know better and intriguing small town secrets. Andrew65 @gradcat No one would expect you to reread books, great to have you join us whenever you haven‘t read the books. 😠5y
gradcat @Andrew65 Some people do reread though, so thanks for your response. Feeling any better? â™¥ï¸ 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Thanks for asking. Unfortunately Doc given me some new medication to try and get on top of the acid issue, but instead of making it better has made it worse. 🤔 1 step forward, 2 steps back! 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 Oh, Andrew, I am sorry. I wish you well, my buddy. Btw, have you seen @EadieB on here? I seem to be missing her...I hope she‘s not sick. I should just go look her up to be sure. I hope you feel better by the holiday, Andrew...I‘m sending you my best wishes for feeling better! â™¥ï¸ 5y
EadieB @gradcat @Andrew65 I'm right here! Where have you been? I'm still coughing and feeling like my sinuses are starting to act up again. Maybe because my grandkids are sick again too! (edited) 5y
gradcat @EadieB I did get the flu, and it took me a while to get over it. And for some reason, it really set off my Meniere‘s—I‘ve been nauseated for what seems like a month! It makes it very hard to read because my glasses and my attempt to focus just add to the dizziness. But I‘m feeling lots better now, so I‘m reading like a student! I sure hope you feel better soon, because I would really hate for you to be sick over the holidays! Crossing my fingers! 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Doctors frightened life out of me on what was a bad and stressful school day. Text message to phone them following ECG yesterday. Worry etc! 😬 Only to be to,d ECG normal! Why phone and stress you just to say that. At least day finished on a positive note with Christmas Carol Concert at school tonight. @eadieb 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat hope you are feeling better. â£ï¸ 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB And you too Eadie â£ï¸ 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 We are starting to sound like a hospital ward with all our problems. @gradcat 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I think we resemble that comment! 😂 @gradcat 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 & @EadieB I have had similar things happen to me, Andrew, and it is very nerve-wracking! Hopefully someone will figure something out for you—and SOON—and you will have a calm holiday...Sheesh!! And yes, Eadie, we do sound like we‘re in the waiting room, right? But I try to keep it within our series group, ha ha ha! So @Crazeedi — would you like to sit in the virtual doctor‘s waiting room with us? 😂🤣😂 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat @Andrew65 @EadieB I've been complaining much too much lately, but I feel all your troubles! I'd say its cause we're getting old, but I'm not going there! We're still young! 😉💖 5y
Tove_Reads @Crazeedi @gradcat @eadieb @andrew65 You need to read more! This is what Doctor Me prescribes! 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I like that medicine and it‘s easy to swallow! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I take plenty of that medicine! 📚 @Tove_Reads 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Best medicine there is! 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Thank you for that perfect remedy...I‘m looking so forward to our #NordicNoir reading in 2020! 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi I know I‘m old, and I‘m sure you‘re right in my case!! (But sometimes I think I‘m still in my 20s!) 😂🤣😂 (edited) 5y
AnneCecilie When do the discussions start? I see that Jussi Adler-Olsen is the first week. Does that mean discussion on the 5th or the 12th? 5y
Tove_Reads @AnneCecilie 5th. I will finish a book first and then post stuff on Litsy. 5y
AnneCecilie @Tove_Reads Thanks. Then I‘ll have the book read by then 5y

Ice Princess | Camilla Läckberg
post image

1. The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg immediately popped into my mind 📚
2. Frozen, and ditto the above (however, I never saw the movie & I hate that damn song that was everywhere for a while—sorry!) 🎥
3. Baby, It‘s Cold Outside by Esther Williams (which I understand is now considered sexist—I can‘t help it—I‘m so suggestible!) 🎼

Mehso-so

I‘m relatively lukewarm about this mystery. The writing was ok, however it was translated so maybe that‘s where my issue with the book lies. I wasn‘t moved in any way by the plot line. I‘ll the second book a chance and hope that it improves.

Pickpick

Book 1 of the new year done! It was an interesting little town with a murder mystery. I did not see the end coming. It was a bit of a surprise. I am usually very good at guessing.
