What a hauntingly beautiful and sad story. Set in Paris during late 1860, it is a story about the Haussmann era in Paris and how the modernization of the city uprooted entire neighborhoods destroying homes the houses generations of families.
I am surprised by the low ratings for this book. Very different from the story behind Sarah‘s Key, there is no way to compare, but I found the writing to be lyrical and lush and the story to be beautiful.
