This is a heavy book, literally and figuratively. If you haven‘t read Hyperbole and a Half, read that first. This book benefits from that prior knowledge. It‘s raw and honest and at times absurd, but worth reading.

Some books are windows and some are mirrors; one need only look at our matching yellow ponytails & shifty googly eyes to know that Brosh‘s book is the latter for me. Her awkwardness, her anxiety, her indomitable creativity. Sure, she‘s much stranger (& I think much smarter & more daring) than me…but I find her so relatable. I love her EveryMillennial stick figure drawings & her sense of humor. I laughed out loud at the same time my heart hurt.👇🏻

monalyisha @BiblioLitten I think you should, too — especially if you‘re already familiar with her style, her humor, & have a(t least a vague) understanding of her battle with her mental health. It shed some light on her as a person, & and it was pitch-perfect funny, too (while not shying away from her/our struggles to find connection & make meaning). (edited) 3y

The story begins:

“A kid said hi to me. I said, “Hello, how are you?” She said, “Good, how about you?”

The end of the story is that, working with children as I do, this is me…every day of my life.

I love Allie Brosh 💚💚💚 Like Jenny Lawson, her honest, and often humorous look at life, anxiety, depression, and just day to day activities always leaves me in a good mood.

This book has some dark, emotional sections and I love that the author didn't shy away from sharing them.

This book was a lot different from her last one. This was mostly dark humor and seemed to be Brosh working through the absolute series of tragedies she had over the last few years. I laughed and wanted to just give her a giant hug, sometimes at the same time

Also, we got a new kitten! Meet Archimedes. The boyfriend named him. He was a street cat who jumped into my car and told me to take him home, so I did.

I managed to finish a book for the #20in4 and it was a wonderful choice. By turns funny, absurd, heartfelt, devastating, and honest, I enjoyed every single page. Made me realize just how much I‘ve missed Allie‘s voice and humor over the last 7 years. Recommended if you like her stuff already - don‘t know how this would hit if it‘s your introduction to Ms Brosh.

Allie Brosh‘s follow-up to her first book has a very different tone and feel to it. The humor is still there, but it also feels like an outlet for the author to work through the traumas she experienced in the last few years. Some chapters are more meandering and drawn out, but others are incredibly moving. It‘s a hard book to rate or review.

It‘s been an emotionally draining month. I‘ve been seeing a lot of clients in our HIV clinic lately that fell out of care during the pandemic and are just surfacing again. All of them are worse off than before, esp mental health wise, including the return of some risky behaviors, but I‘m so glad they are returning for care and case management. There may be a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, but are we prepared for the aftermath? ⬇️⬇️

I find this book difficult to rate, possibly because of my expectations. I expected humor, and there‘s some of that; what I didn‘t expect was outright nihilism. I know Brosh has dealt with mental issues in the past, but this was beyond that. I came out of this reading experience feeling almost hopeless. Pics are from this evening‘s walk where I continued to listen to The Southern Side of Paradise. #audiowalk

This is a big book. A 500+ page hardcover book of illustrated memoir to be exact. I don‘t know if it needed all 500 pages. I had high expectations because I enjoyed Allie Brosh‘s first book, Hyperbole and a Half, and unfortunately I could never quite get into this in the same way. Some essays I slogged through. Some were hysterical. Most were a pit of misery. If I was reading this pre-COVID, would I have found it more enjoyable?

This is, as expected, perfect. Allie Broch is extremely to the point about the arbitrary weirdness of the universe, whether that's about personal disasters or a very, very stubborn five-year-old neighbor. Or, like the story shown above, about taking a lot of drugs and going into the forest in attempt to conquer all your fears at once.

While this book was hilarious at times, and had me snorting in glee, it was also very poignant and sad. The mix of graphic novel and memoir was an interesting concept and it really brought together her stories. Her drawings are also PERFECT, for portraying the innocence of being a kid, the loneliness of being on your own and the sadness of losing one you love.

I will definitely go back and get Hyperbole and a Half. Loved it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

PatriciaU The author posted a huge collection of personal photos to her FB page which were taken during the time she was writing this book. Your descriptors of hilarious, poignant, and sad apply to those photos and captions, but also hopeful, strong, and persistent. 4y

Allie Brosh has had a lot happen to her since Hyperbole and a Half so this book was often darker and more introspective. But I liked it! She still had plenty of stories and illustrations that made me laugh out loud (the way she captures that derpy dog expression kills me every time) and I could appreciate her struggles even if I haven't been through the same things.

It‘s a very different tone from her first book, but I almost think I liked it better. Life is full of random hilarious moments and moments of deep tragedy and loneliness. It felt honest. Allie Brosh has definitely been through a lot since her first book was released, but once again she found a way to communicate difficult exhorting and to write and illustrate such funny stories that I laughed outloud so much my husband asked what I was doing.

She talks about depression, death, and guilt a lot, so a warning for anyone who doesn't feel up to that right now.
