The Christmas Card Crime and Other Stories
The Christmas Card Crime and Other Stories | Martin Edwards
20 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 10 to read
Mystery crime fiction written in the Golden Age of Murder A Christmas party is punctuated by a gunshot under a policeman's watchful eye. A jewel heist is planned amidst the glitz and glamour of Oxford Street's Christmas shopping. Lost in a snowstorm, a man finds a motive for murder. This collection of mysteries explores the darker side of the festive seasonfrom unexplained disturbances in the fresh snow, to the darkness that lurks beneath the sparkling decorations. With neglected stories by John Bude and E.C.R. Lorac, as well as tales by little-known writers of crime fiction, Martin Edwards blends the cosy atmosphere of the fireside story with a chill to match the temperature outside. This is a gripping seasonal collection sure to delight mystery fans

Ack! It was a crazy day yesterday so I‘m behind. It‘s my dream to spend a winter solstice in Banff. I think this would be the best holiday card.

A collection of seasonal crime stories by some of the crime writers of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. As with any anthology, there are some that don‘t personally hit the mark (I‘m not a fan of the seemingly popular at the time method of a character recounting a tale of a crime to an audience) but there are some that are a delight, my personal favourite being John Bingham‘s Crime At Lark Cottage.

Book no. 2 for the #WinterReadathon 25 pts

Andrew65 Brilliant, I know my wife enjoyed this one last year. 🎄🎄🎄 2y

Leisurely sipping French Roast and reading Paul Temple‘s White Christmas by Francis Durbridge. This collection has introduced me to several new detection/crime 20th c authors.Apparently many of Paul Temple‘s & his journalist compatriot, Steve‘s,adventures in crime solving were originally written as radio plays.Audible has some remastered; I plan to listen to one.

I've been rubbish at getting round to Christmas cards again this year, and I don't think they'll arrive in time by now anyway. So I've made a donation to Book trust again this year for our #jbuk group https://www.booktrust.org.uk/

TrishB Sounds fab 👍🏻 4y

A solid collection of Golden Age mysteries, some of which have clever twists indeed. Refreshing to read in the middle of a heatwave.

From the intro to the story Crime at Lark Cottage: its author is John Bingham, a colleague of David Cornwell‘s / John le Carré‘s who was a key inspiration for the character of George Smiley ???‍♂️

First finished book of 2020, and a fine Christmas read. I enjoyed the selection and range of these stories, and appreciated the background on each author.

Thank you @jhod @RachelO and @kathedron for the lovely Christmas cards!
I read the tagged book for book club. It was a mixed bag, but the only one I hated was the ghost story.

I am so far behind on my Christmas to do list that I am feeling less heartwarming (holiday romance) and more murderous (holiday mystery) so I chose this one for Day 9 of the #bookadventcalendar. @LeahBergen

Deifio I guess christmas is a time of opposites? Love and murder 😜😅 5y
eraderneely Reading this for book club at the moment 5y
BookNAround @eraderneely I hope you‘re enjoying it. Don‘t know if I‘ll get far enough on my to do list to actually crack it open this year or not! 5y
LeahBergen I almost ordered this recently. 😆 5y
