A wedding celebration turns dark and deadly in this deliciously wicked and atmospheric thriller reminiscent of Agatha Christie from the author of The Hunting Party. The bride ? The plus one ? The best man ? The wedding planner ? The bridesmaid ? The body On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It's a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride's oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast. And then someone turns up dead. Who didn't wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

It took a little bit for me to get into this, but when things started to unravel I couldn‘t put it down!

First Lucy Foley and I will for sure pick up another one of her books.

This is my book club‘s pick for September, and I have to catch up on two weeks worth of reading so that I can be ready for the discussion on Sunday 😅

It looks like a quick read, so I think I can do it.

Remote island. Despicable people. Dark secrets. Then, a body. While I liked The Hunting Party by Foley, I liked this one a bit more. There were twists I did not see coming—and a few gasps as they were revealed—set on an island with its own share of ghosts. Peat bogs? Cemetery? Abandoned houses? You know that‘s a recipe for a spooky atmosphere!

#52BookClub24 #TheOtherBookWithASimilarPlot (I‘m tying this to The Twelve Days of Murder).

Librarybelle It‘s a dark and stormy night at my house, so thought this photo would set the book‘s mood. 😂 3mo

Try as I might I just couldn't vibe with this one. I had moments where I found myself more immersed than others, and I quite liked the way the author drew her storylines together at the end. But all in all this was just okay for me. #audiobook

I basically kept picking up this novel because I wanted it finished. The premise drew me in. I love a good Christie-like closed room mystery/thriller. But I‘m learning I should just stick with the master. Let‘s have all completely unlikeable characters, all with a mix of a dark secret and hatred for one another, be invited to a wedding no one really wants to be at, on an isolated island. What could possibly go wrong?! 🙄

This was a pretty quick and fun read but surprised that it was a finalist in 2020 for BOTM. Some of the twists were pretty outlandish and it really felt like a mediocre thriller. I feel like some of this could be solved by ordering some of the chapters, but I‘m not an author so 🤷🏼‍♀️

👰🏻 This story takes place on a small Irish island where an extravagant wedding is about to take place. The only problem is that by the end of the night someone winds up murdered.
🤵🏼An excellent mystery that I could not stop reading after the first twist, & there are a lot of twists. My photo is from Wednesday night when I read with Nova past my bedtime to finish. Taken at La Posada in Winslow, Arizona.

I flew through this book. It kept you engaged the entire time. It starts at the end then works it way back but not in a linear way. I loved that it was in many people‘s different voices and perspectives. She created a puzzle to put together from different people accounts of current and past events. And most importantly the author had me guessing right to the very end. Excellent book! I have already recommended it to others.

5feet.of.fury I‘ve liked all her thrillers, I thought this one was so good. 11mo

Personally, I believe this is the best Lucy Foley book, by far.
Full of atmosphere, suspense, and mystery. I love a good "whodunit" and the multiple narrative in this book is perfect for it. Every person has motive. I did guess the two big twists about 60% in.
Overall, very good.

5feet.of.fury I liked this one, she has a formula but it works well 12mo

A good little break from decorating for Christmas. I definitely liked this story more than Foleys last trapped somewhere remote book The Hunting Party. Lots of suspects in this one but only one has the balls to murder.

This one took me a bit to get through to be honest. It didn‘t hold my attention as well as other similar books. It wasn‘t bad and didn‘t end up being a DNF but wasn‘t as much of a page turner like I had hoped

I got this book out of a blind date with a book. Good, but it didn‘t live up to the thriller vibes I expected. I wish the murder had been sooner. I had wanted it to happen early and then have a Clue-style mystery. The plot was still good and I liked the twists at the end, but it wasn‘t the murder mystery I had hoped for. 4⭐️

I thought this was going to be a thriller, turns out it's a murder mystery. That's not really my genre, but I liked it! I will definitely be checking out more from this author. Short POV chapters, made it a quick read. I enjoyed the twist at the end.

5feet.of.fury I liked this one! Hunting Party is the same type of vibe! 1y

#Booked2023 - wrongly incarcerated main character (don't worry - that isn't a spoiler. Happens at the very end when you already know whodunit.)

Started this one! I bet it's a great thriller but I'm not sure I'm in the mood of it right now...

Maybe because I recently finished And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and I didn't fully realize this story is based on the classic.

I may put this on the back-burner for a bit and start a new physical read.

Wish I read this before Paris Apartment!! Constant game of cat & mouse with the reader on who the victim & culprit are. Multiple POV, creepy atmosphere, characters have depth without over/underwhelming. Fun murder mystery on an island with recognizable characters completely trapped. Really enjoyed this one especially on audio.

Brings me to 2 bingos! Will post my final bingo board in a few.

A bit of white wine and a thriller while on holiday.

Let‘s see how this one goes; I seem to enjoy a lot of current thrillers until I get to the ending. Anyone else? 🤷🏻‍♀️

batsy Yes! The endings tend to ruin what was a perfectly good book. 2y
sarahbarnes Sounds like a great holiday! 2y
tpixie @batsy @LeahBergen I agrée! I do recall Stephen King, saying the ending is always the hardest part of the book! 2y

TheLudicReader Yep. So much promise until the end and then it all falls apart. 🙁 2y
Cathythoughts Yes ! Or I enjoy the first half and the author loses me. 🤷‍♀️ 2y
LitStephanie Yeah, I love thrillers, but sometimes the endings are this huge complex mess being crammed into a quick wrapup, and I am left thinking "Wait, what? What about x, y, and z." Enjoy your holiday! 2y
vivastory Don't get me started on the problem with the endings of contemporary thrillers *sigh* 2y
LeahBergen @batsy And yet I don‘t usually find that to be the case with a lot of vintage thrillers. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
LeahBergen @sarahbarnes It was. Thank you! 2y
LeahBergen @tpixie It must be! 2y
LeahBergen @TheLudicReader It‘s like they try to hard for “the twist”. 2y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Yes! About 80% of the time. It‘s probably why I enjoy vintage psychological suspense so much more. They don‘t seem to try so hard for the big twisty finish. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
LeahBergen @LitStephanie That‘s exactly it! 2y
LeahBergen @vivastory Right? What‘s wrong with a quietly malevolent ending? 😆 2y
Cathythoughts Great discussion! I really wish the modern thriller writers could see this thread 👍🏻 2y

I read this b/c of the Agatha Christie comparisons, which is silly because I don‘t think I‘ve ever read an AC book. The victim isn‘t revealed until the end, but I kept thinking I spaced some portion. I often feel like I‘m reading great books, but don‘t know it.

Holy Beep! This book was a ride! It started off slow for me and I had to push through for a bit, but oh my stars am I glad that I did! I love the authors style of writing of you now knowing the killer or victim until the end, it makes the guessing so much more exciting. In fact I think with my reaction to the ending I have convince members of my family they need to read her books. Highly recommend!

Another hugely entertaining and moreish mystery novel from up-and-coming crime author, Lucy Foley.

They aren't top quality literature, but they are readable, fast-paced and full of twists.

Remote, eerie location, some thoroughly HORRIBLE characters and a satisfyingly dramatic ending.

This was a fun “closed room” thriller about a wedding on a secluded island that seems perfect but there are many cracks in the veneer. I wasn‘t sure I was going to stick with this one because it is full of unlikeable characters, but it has some great twists and a highly satisfying end. 4⭐️

A sort-of locked room mystery where the characters weren't likable. Some were even assholes (talking to you, men-who-still-behave-like-demented schoolboys). The constant chapter switching got to be a bit annoying as well; some chapters were only 1-2 paragraphs! One had to suspend her disbelief as well, especially the link between the victim and several wedding party guests. Still a fun read, but it didn't leave me feeling satisfied at the end.

It' was good at times like the setting are devilish characters. But the book was too long..... Like... Get to the point!! I think this book would of been so much better if it were shorter. It took me all summer to read because.... I didn't really care what happened... But I kinda wanted to know??

DrexEdit It takes me a long time to decide to DNF a book like that. I usually end up finishing them, like you did. 2y
