"A twisty, captivating, edge-of-your-seat read." --Megan Miranda, bestselling author of All the Missing Girls "Creepy and oh so clever!" --Alice Feeney, bestselling author of Sometimes I Lie A woman is forced to question her own identity in this riveting and emotionally charged thriller by the blockbuster bestselling author of The Good Girl, Mary Kubica Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that causes her to doubt everything she's ever known. Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by grief and a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessie's mind. Her judgment is blurred, her thoughts are hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between what's real and what she's only imagined. Meanwhile, twenty years earlier and two hundred and fifty miles away, another woman's split-second decision may hold the key to Jessie's secret past. Has Jessie's whole life been a lie or have her delusions gotten the best of her?

GidgetsTreasures75 Lots of trigger warnings about death and grief and mothers and miscarriages…it was quite depressing for a bit then the author turned it on its head! 2y

So, you have a woman who never sleeps, a woman dealing with infertility, some very unreliable narrators and a secluded carriage house on the property of a large house that has a third floor overrun with squirrels. Written in 2 time periods, I was intrigued but ultimately let down by the ending .

#LittensDressedInBlood Today's prompt is Enter Sandman

When I think of this song the first thing that pops in my head, other than the terrifying music video, is the lyric “Sleep with one eye open“. So I started to think about books where characters aren't sleeping and that brought me to the tagged book. The mc has insomnia and strange things are happening to her, and everything is messed up. I only gave it two stars bc I hated the “twist“, ⬇

So. I didn't like the “twist“. It felt like it was going somewhere, then it just went a bit lackluster. I was not super excited about it.

Not a fan of this book. I expected better, but the ending had me hardcore rolling my eyes. And the middle was so muddled that I had trouble finishing the book and the pay off just wasn't worth it in my opinion.

Definitely my least favourite from Mary Kubica. I was looking forward to something super eerie and creepy, but that‘s definitely not what I got. Not a fan if the “plot twist” at the end. Just seemed like lazy writing, and therefore a waste of my time. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Finished 2 from my Chirp #BookSpinBingo board, and I‘m on my second (tagged) book from my physical #BookSpinBingo board. So... 3/85 down for this month. 😂 Realistically, I‘ll probably finish between 40-50 books, but I‘m still shooting for the full 85, because why not?

If I had been anywhere other than on a plane when I finished this, I would have thrown it across the room with all the force in my body.
Maybe this is what some people want to read? I don‘t hate an unreliable narrator, but this is everything I hate about where the whole genre is at right now. The unreliability, the insomnia, the dreams, the infertile-woman/women-in-general-as-crazy. I‘m not here for any of this right now.

I wasn't really a fan of this book. From the beginning I was waiting for more to happen and to feel some sort of connection or sympathy towards the characters, but I felt none. The ending felt like the biggest cop-out, and because of how it ended and the nature of having an unreliable narrator, I know nothing more about these characters than I did on page one. Personally, I thought reading this was a waste of time.

wellreadredhead I‘ve felt this way about the two books of hers I‘ve read too! 6y
Kaylamburson Such a bummer! All the concepts sound so good. I probably won't try another as I've heard similar things a out all her books. @collegecatlady 6y
MicheleinPhilly I‘ve read 2 of her books and was disappointed in both. I think she‘s just not a good match for me. 6y

Another ok book from Mary Kubica— I think it‘s safe to say I don‘t need to pick up another. I‘m most disappointed with this one though because of how excited I was to pick up a story with an unreliable narrator who is such from sleep deprivation, not from drugs/alcohol/sociopathy. The ending wasn‘t a total shock, nor did it feel like a cop out, but overall it didn‘t seem like Kubica pushed the possibilities of either woman‘s storyline far enough.

This book is a bit difficult for me to review. It starts off slow, with nothing but the tiniest of hooks to keep you reading, then gets EXTREMELY good in the middle, but the end is just not what I expected at all. It totally veered off course for me and in my opinion, would have been better if the author had gone down the path it seemed to go down in the middle of the book.
That being said, I give this book a 3/5 and will read more of her books!

I thought I knew what was going to happen from the start. The story was more complicated than I first thought. I found it frustrating and didn't bond with any of the characters. I'm going to leave Mary Kubica's work alone for a while.

This one * took me a while to get into * had so many twists it was hard for me to follow at times or guess what would happen next * skipped around a lot * ended abruptly * left me with questions * confused me at times * made me want to figure out the background of the story * was not as good as others by the author

RadicalReader @kstadt929 looking forward to this novel myself sounds wonderful from the description 6y

This was a pick all the way up to the last twist, & there were hints to the last twist so it wasn‘t completely unexpected but I was hoping it wouldn‘t go that way. It just felt disappointing...but up to that point I was loving it & getting into it. Then it twisted, landed with a thud & fell flat. However, the writing was great & I‘m sure many will enjoy the twist, just didn‘t work for me. I do look forward to reading more of Kubica‘s work though.

Well that was not what I was expecting for an ending. It was a quick read that definitely kept my interest. Insomnia....losing a mother.... Losing your own identity... It was filled with twists and turns.. I'm going to be thinking about that ending for awhile....
