Even better the second time.
Sharp satire that never forgets to be understanding about humanity's flaws, and their potential for growth.
Fantastical shenanigans certainly, but between William de Worde's epiphanies and Mr Pin and Mr Tulip's final reewards, this one hits hard between the laughs. 1/?
“clash of symbols“?!
Excuse me while I geek out on the best homonymic word play, EVER.
“Let me in, I'm nosy“
Really boiling the Press Pass down to its essence! 😆

I read my comfort reads over and over again! Usually Sylvester by Georgette Heyer, Val Mcdermid's retelling of Northanger Abbey and the original, some of Tessa Bailey's books and The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory. Also Guards!Guards! And The truth by Pratchett.
"The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret" indeed! I think the most surprising part of this particular Discworld book was how tightly plotted it felt this felt. The pros and cons of 'freedom of the press' and journalistic ethics are debated alongside colourful expansions on grimmer realities: homelessness and privilege, specisim/racism, political corruption, criminals of various stripes that have the potential for redemption, and may or may not seize it.
"...a formula that caused him to hallucinate that he was completely sane*...*This is a very common hallucination, shared by most people."
An aptly named book. ?
I think this is my favourite Discworld yet! Really funny take on journalism, corruption, broadsheet vs tabloid, very very good!
And here‘s #bookspin #doublespin #bookspinbingo for Jan!
It is not a lie that I love Terry Pratchett books.
It it the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Especially this one.

My first completed #NutsInMay book and my first foray into the Discworld! 😃 Excellent satire about the power and vulnerability of the press. Published 20 years ago, the novel illustrates that “Fake News” is not new or unique to the 21st century. Funny and inventive, as I expected but also with a lot of complex subtext, which I didn‘t anticipate but appreciate.
I think we could all use a good laugh right now, don‘t you? 😅
1. GNU Sir Terry Pratchett ❤️💛❤️
2. The Jewish-Japanese Sex & Cook Book and How to Raise Wolves, published in 1972 and I have SO MANY questions
3. Amy Poehler‘s memoir, Yes Please

What a great Pratchett to start the year with, the plot is crazy as always, but the subtext about the “Truth Will Set Ye Free”, faked news, those in power trying to subvert the legal leader for their own benefit, and if they are doing it they must be right and everyone else wrong....seemed on point when I finished it last night before election returns started coming in, and even more so today. What a day!

This book feels... odd? It sort of (to me) feels like practice for Going Postal. I wish we spent more time with William and his interiority and privilege, but this was mostly a fun, frantic read. Love Otto so much!
#OokBOokClub
Gotta say, as a Floridian, this is my least favorite part of the book! I realize it's only 2 years after the 2000 election, but fuck off Denver Post!
#OokBOokClub
LOVE that Vimes is getting yet another honor he doesn't want in a book he's barely in.
#OokBOokClub
I've noticed this much more on this reread, but everything happens ludicrously FAST. The dwarves and their printer just got to Ankh-Morpork and after like 4 days they're ready to give up and go back to mining. At least take your press to Sto Lat or something!
#OokBOokClub
I feel like I should have figured it out on the first repetition of the idiom, but William's dad is one of the shadowy cabal, right? I don't actually remember, but it seems likely.
#OokBOokClub
I love Otto, but coming back to how vampires are handled in Ankh-Morpork is starting off a little painful - it's one thing to apply coming out language to some of the undead but then talk about how a vampire's only recourse is to assimilate into “normal“ society? It hurts.
#OokBOokClub
Started the next in the #OokBOokClub and I'm bummed for Vetinari having to give his lovely shape of the world speech to someone who doesn't care.

Book Number 3 off my #BookSpinBingo board
Well, do I really need to explain why Terry Pratchett is a pick? I don't think so. I loved how he explores the truth and how we deal with facts - especially in the times of Fake News.
@TheAromaofBooks
Some of the books I plan to read in August. Working hard on my TBR shelf - I still want it to go down to zero by the end of the year 🤞
As promised here's my list for the August round of #BookSpin
Of course I'd like to participate in #DoubleSpin and #BookSpinBingo as well!

My May wrap up.
Favorites: The Truth- Terry Pratchett, The Feather Thief- Wallace Johnson, and Rules of Civility- Amor Towles.
There were a lot of really good books this month!
Discworld‘s version of the invention of the printing press and newspapers. This is one of my favorite covers from these new clothbound hardcovers. Yellow, lavender and silver, and a very cool graphic illustration!
Great new characters and villains, as well as appearances by our favorite group of homeless guys- Foul Ol‘ Ron, Duck Man, and of course Gaspode, and a plot against the Patrician. Hilarity ensues!
#doublespin @TheAromaofBooks
William de Worde invents the newspaper and exposes dastardly political shenanigans to replace Lord Vetinari as Patrician.
Not perhaps Pratchett's funniest but plenty of wordplay and wry observations about the world.
Fire was always the terror in those parts of the city where wood and thatch predominated. That was why everyone had been so dead set against any form of fire brigade, reasoning—with impeccable Ankh-Morpork logic—that any bunch of men who were paid to put out fires would naturally see to it that there was a plentiful supply of fires to put out.
"Ankh-Morpork people considered that spelling was a sort of optional extra. They believed in it in the same way they believed in punctuation; it didn‘t matter where you put it, so long as it was there."
And haven't we all known people like that?
Hiding my Kindle from guests at work to read about magical printing presses while sitting....in the print shop.
"It was a puzzle why things were always dragged kicking and screaming. No one ever seemed to want to, for example, lead them gently by the hand." #Scream #QuotsyOct18
