High Fidelity | Nick Hornby
High Fidelity is Nick Hornby's hilarious and heart-breaking first novel bestsellerDo you know your desert-island, all-time, top five most memorable split-ups?Rob does. He keeps a list, in fact. But Laura isn't on it - even though she's just become his latest ex. He's got his life back, you see. He can just do what he wants when he wants: like listen to whatever music he likes, look up the girls that are on his list, and generally behave as if Laura never mattered. But Rob finds he can't move on. He's stuck in a really deep groove - and it's called Laura. Soon, he's asking himself some big questions: about love, about life - and about why we choose to share ours with the people we do.A million-copy bestseller, and adapted into a 2000 film starring John Cusack, High Fidelity explores the world of break-ups, make-ups and what it is to be in love. This astutely observed and wickedly funny book will be enjoyed by readers of David Nicholls and William Boyd, and by generations of readers to come.'It will give enormous pleasure at the same time as expanding in a small but worthwhile way, the range of English literature' Independent on Sunday'Leaves you believing not only in the redemptive power of music but above all the redemptive power of love. Funny and wise, sweet and true' Independent'A triumphant first novel. True to life, very funny and moving' Financial Times

A book that contains a lot of my favourite things, record shops, lists, musical snobbery. Whilst Rob the main character can be quite unsympathetic. It‘s a great read and glad I finally got round to reading it after watching the movie many years ago

CarolynM Musical snobbery is one of my favourite things too😆 Loved this book (and the movie). 7mo

1-5 Dec 23 (audiobook)
Rob is in his mid-30s but has failed to grow up. He owns a failing record store, has few friends and a series of ex-girlfriends, who all seem to have dumped him for someone better. When his latest girlfriend leaves, he decides to reconnect with his exes to inquire why they dumped him.
Rob is immature and difficult to like. He is misogynistic, sulky and bitter.
But I loved Hornby‘s ability to evoke the period and his humour.

9-16-22: My 91st finished book of 2022! Rob, a whiny 30 something owner of a record shop in London has been dumped, again. This leads him to look back at past relationships and try to figure out what went wrong, while trying to win his recent girlfriend back. I love the way Nick Hornby writes but Rob is very annoying in how he handles women so it was tough reading his inner monologues and not get frustrated with him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣9️⃣1️⃣

I finished my #DoubleSpin pick this month! I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. It was sort of a coming of age novel about a 36-year-old who should have already grown up. He sees everyone being adults around him, and it seems to make him angry, until he realizes how that could be just as important to him as his record collection and knowledge of music.

Another semester of uni over so I‘m BACK! This book is for book club and I would‘ve liked it better if it weren‘t entirely about a hopeless, selfish, self-absorbed a-hole who obsesses about what other people think of him and whose existence depends entirely on whether he can get his D wet. At least it was better than the last book club book (Ready Player Two - not even worth a Litsy add) so for that reason alone this book is not a pan.

The main character is flat, boring and spine-less. He only defines himself through the women he dates and the music he thinks is best. The plot is meaningless and the side characters add nothing. The writing style is fine, but not something that will stay in your head.

I thought this was pretty fun! Loads about music, books, and movies from the 80‘s and 90‘s.

The main story is about a guy who owns a record store and is pretty bad at relationships. There‘s not a fast moving plot, but a bunch of scruffy characters with not a lot of direction to their lives, and some musicians.

I was glad to see the MC have a bit of personal growth by the end. Midway through I thought he was going to be hopeless.

Soubhiville @AmyG gave me this for my BDay 😊📚 Thanks Amy! 4y

I miss the old record stores like Record Bar, great places to hear new music. I always said a mall without a music store and a book store, isn't a real mall.

#QuotsyAug20 #vinyl

@TK-421

AmyG I loved as a kid going to the record store every week. Music has been one of my life‘s greatest joys. 4y
RamsFan1963 @AmyG In high school, going to the mall's book store, record store and movie theater was a weekly ritual. You saw everyone from school, hung out, listened to music together, met your new gf/bf. I miss that kind of thing. Malls now, where they still exist, are cold sterile things, full of clothing and shoe stores. No heart, no soul, no personality. 4y
MicheleinPhilly The day I turned 16 I went to the mall and filled out an application for Sam Goody. I pretty much gave my paycheck right back to them each week. 4y

IamIamIam In high school, we shopped at The Wall because they had a lifetime guarantee. Too bad it was for my lifetime, not theirs... 😂 4y

marleed I often tell my kids about all the time I spent looking through the record (and then cd) collections of my friends and family. It told a story of who they were. I was still buying CDs when my kids were home. But as adults neither has spent their own money on either a physical or electronic album. My son just picks a style and Spotify streams his music. 4y
RamsFan1963 @MoonWitch94 Oh I loved the staff at Tower Records, they were great at recommending new music to me. I discovered many of my now favorites because of them. 4y

“My desert-island, all-time, top five...”

Nick Hornby wrote the character Rob in such a way that it made me care what he was thinking and understood his actions (even though I didn‘t like Rob for most of the book). Then Hornby ties Rob up in the end as a truly relatable protagonist.

My all time top five favourite things about high fidelity:
1- the top fives
2- the mix tapes
3- existential angst
4- immature narcissistic narrator
5- it‘s not what you like, it‘s what you‘re like.

So going of number 5, even if you don‘t like high fidelity, I can still (theoretically) like you.

I first read this as a teenager and all I remember was that I really didn't like it. A friend of mine said it's one of her favourite books so I thought I'd give it a go as an adult. I laughed out loud twice and enjoyed all the lists and music. However, it is not ok to continue trying to grab girls' breasts and crotches when they're saying no and batting you away and the nonchalant way this is described is wrong.
