A book that contains a lot of my favourite things, record shops, lists, musical snobbery. Whilst Rob the main character can be quite unsympathetic. It‘s a great read and glad I finally got round to reading it after watching the movie many years ago
1-5 Dec 23 (audiobook)
Rob is in his mid-30s but has failed to grow up. He owns a failing record store, has few friends and a series of ex-girlfriends, who all seem to have dumped him for someone better. When his latest girlfriend leaves, he decides to reconnect with his exes to inquire why they dumped him.
Rob is immature and difficult to like. He is misogynistic, sulky and bitter.
But I loved Hornby‘s ability to evoke the period and his humour.
One of my top five favourite books of all time. Great choice for a re-read. #bookfiveof2023

9-16-22: My 91st finished book of 2022! Rob, a whiny 30 something owner of a record shop in London has been dumped, again. This leads him to look back at past relationships and try to figure out what went wrong, while trying to win his recent girlfriend back. I love the way Nick Hornby writes but Rob is very annoying in how he handles women so it was tough reading his inner monologues and not get frustrated with him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣9️⃣1️⃣

I love this book so much that I find it difficult to write about it. It's so brilliant and real.
"What came first – the music or the misery? Did I listen to the music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to the music?"
Nick Hornby- High Fidelity
I finished my #DoubleSpin pick this month! I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. It was sort of a coming of age novel about a 36-year-old who should have already grown up. He sees everyone being adults around him, and it seems to make him angry, until he realizes how that could be just as important to him as his record collection and knowledge of music.

#ProfessionalBOokNerdsChallenge #Day2 @Readergrrl Can't just pick one!3 of my favourite writers,I absolutely LOVE Fever Pitch though I'm not a football fan-it's a book about fandom in general, and being human. There are so many Pratchetts that could be the best,I picked this one-I really like the books where Moist features, they're lovely allegories of the modern world.Adichie is a genius, enough said.

Day 144.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.
Finished my July #BookSpin. I don‘t like writing bad reviews but honesty this should have been a bail. Bye, Felicia 😆 Full Review here. I had a lot to say 🙃

“Well, I‘m sexist, aren‘t I? Is that the right answer?”
I think this line about sums up my experience reading the book. Yes Rob. That is the answer. Reading this book made me want to question my own memory having grown up loving the film.

I will be spending some quality time with my Kindle/Overdrive this month I think I maybe have 2 books this time that are psychical books
Another semester of uni over so I‘m BACK! This book is for book club and I would‘ve liked it better if it weren‘t entirely about a hopeless, selfish, self-absorbed a-hole who obsesses about what other people think of him and whose existence depends entirely on whether he can get his D wet. At least it was better than the last book club book (Ready Player Two - not even worth a Litsy add) so for that reason alone this book is not a pan.
The main character is flat, boring and spine-less. He only defines himself through the women he dates and the music he thinks is best. The plot is meaningless and the side characters add nothing. The writing style is fine, but not something that will stay in your head.

1. I currently live in Columbus, Ohio - My Fathers Closet 2. Indian reservation in Montana. -The Only Good Indians. 3. The Altmans - This is Where I Leaves You. -just for fun High Fidelity because the movie being filmed in Chicago is the best
What are your thoughts on High Fidelity? I‘m in the middle of reading this one and so far I‘ve enjoyed his style and story. The generous dose of music reference helps! 😁

I thought this was pretty fun! Loads about music, books, and movies from the 80‘s and 90‘s.
The main story is about a guy who owns a record store and is pretty bad at relationships. There‘s not a fast moving plot, but a bunch of scruffy characters with not a lot of direction to their lives, and some musicians.
I was glad to see the MC have a bit of personal growth by the end. Midway through I thought he was going to be hopeless.
I miss the old record stores like Record Bar, great places to hear new music. I always said a mall without a music store and a book store, isn't a real mall.

One of my favorite books and films was made into a show on Hulu. I‘m loving how they‘ve updated the story! Zoe Kravitz is great as Rob, and Debbie Harry just showed up on a Springsteen-like cameo.
Good stuff on all mediums.
“My desert-island, all-time, top five...”
Nick Hornby wrote the character Rob in such a way that it made me care what he was thinking and understood his actions (even though I didn‘t like Rob for most of the book). Then Hornby ties Rob up in the end as a truly relatable protagonist.
My all time top five favourite things about high fidelity:
1- the top fives
2- the mix tapes
3- existential angst
4- immature narcissistic narrator
5- it‘s not what you like, it‘s what you‘re like.
So going of number 5, even if you don‘t like high fidelity, I can still (theoretically) like you.

I couldn‘t think of books and #music without thinking of Nick Hornby‘s writing...... Loved this book and movie 📚💕🎥
Book dragons are everywhere, even in little Bavarian towns.
No, I haven‘t switched books (yet) - a conversation with my best friend sparked this question, a la High Fidelity: what are you Top 5 Favourite Books? I can come up with 1-3 easily; 4 and 5 are going to take some serious thought. Let me know yours! Perfect book given as a present by my oldest friend when I had lost my way in the world
The protagonist owns a record shop in London. The book tells of his love life, a sort of ‘male fiction‘? Not up my street.

My brain went to 45 and 33 revolutions per minute!
These two are both set in record shops..... I love High Fidelity but I have yet to read The Music Shop.... mostly because there a so many #meh reviews of it here on Litsy! 🤷♀️
Great, well written and witty palate cleanser. I foresee lots of Nick Hornby in my future. Terrific audio production too. Made me miss the days of home-made mixed tapes.
I‘ve never read a Nick Hornby before and have been meaning to for years. So far this audio version is excellent with a perfectly matched narrator. And the story is witty and interesting, nothing high brow but good fun.
#MayMadness #BookToMovie “What came first , the music or the misery?” There is nothing that I don‘t like about this movie or this book.Yeah, the book takes place in the U.K. & the movie Chicago, but the universal story of love, loss ,deluding oneself & the excessive love of music works wonderfully on both sides of the pond.I read the book when it was first published & it‘s my go to movie when I want the world to “F”off.Early Jack Black?Awesome .
