Sort of like the Braiding Sweet Grass of English people; where the traditions and connection wasn‘t taken away by colonialism, but from neglect and the invasion of Christianity centuries ago. Here, the traditions have been lost entirely, so there are many guesses and many failed attempts. There is little to no cultural memory of such connectedness and tradition.

GingerAntics Those waters are very much muddied by modern inventions that are sold as older than Christianity for someone‘s gain. This focuses on coming out of COVID, lockdown, and the effects of what I can only guess is a type of long COVID on daily life.

I always intended to read this after a reread of Wintering, but this seems even more fitting now than it did in July when I bought it. I looked at the date today and went, crap. 10 more days of sanity. I‘m just not doing the news for the next 4 (or however many years). If something is important, someone will tell me. Something stupid was said and offended XYZ is NOT breaking news!

Robotswithpersonality
The Good Egg | Jory John

Okay, I'm most definitely projecting but, the part where the lesson of the book seems to be that you don't have to be perfect and giving all the time, you should take time for yourself, great, and okay, yes, you can't take on the responsibility of changing other people or cleaning up all their chaos, but...not a single hint of a recognition of the need for a change from the rest of Egg's roommates? 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Who appear to be inconsiderate and destructive, not just a product of quirky personality differences. The Good Egg decides not to worry so much about their behaviour and be good to the other eggs and themself. But will the other eggs be good to the Good Egg beyond the 'welcome home' sign? Is there no expectation that the roommates/coworkers/friends/family in your life might recognize that your sudden need for space and time out 2w
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 is a sign that there needs to be a change in behaviour that is not one-sided? Kinda seems like the Good Egg is still the only one making an effort. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Coping with exposure to difficult personalities in daily life is a good skill to have, but it really shouldn't have to be your default setting.
The book's got beautiful art, but I'm not totally on board for the message as I see it. 🤨

This is a great book if you are having trouble with your day-to-day house chores, or if you are depressed and feel like every small task is a mountain. I'm not at that stage right now. So it wasn't what I was looking for. My stuff is tucked into cupboards and closets, under beds and inside storage containers. My house is clean. It is NOT organized. I want to purge the house of everything unnecessary. This book made me feel like I'm doing great.🙈

lil1inblue This is a good one to keep on hand in case you need it. I went through some health issues for several years, and this was a life saver.
And you ARE doing great! 😉

ItsAnotherJen @lil1inblue 🥰 Thank you!! I do think think this book has great merit. I will keep it in mind as something to recommend to those who might need it. I think I need to look more into the philosophy behind death cleaning. There is so much to be gained from letting go of excess belongings. I haven't had to move in 20 years, so I've accumulated too much. 2w
Scochrane26 Therapists in my agency recommend this one a lot to clients. It‘s not for everyone but good for certain people. 2w

Schnoebs I felt the same way, I did end up following this up with the tagged book. It made me rethink why I‘m holding on to certain things. I‘m honestly thinking about rereading it at some point to make me reevaluate things again. 2w
Kitta Ive been on the waiting list for this one from Libby for a long time. Why is it so popular right now? 2w
Reggie Omg, dishes, I leave them for a week and as soon as I do them, they‘re back. I absolutely hate them. lol maybe this book will help me out. Stacked. 2w
ItsAnotherJen @Schnoebs I'm reading that one right now!! It's exactly what I needed too. 2w
ItsAnotherJen @Kitta It's the time of year-New Years resolutions are a big deal right now. Organization and getting rid of stuff is one of mine and I think a lot of people are in the same boat. 2w
Sparklemn The author had an opinion piece in The NY Times last week if anyone is interested in reading it. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/01/opinion/celebrating-messiness.html?unlocked_a... 2w
Kitta @ItsAnotherJen ahhh okay yeah that makes sense then, I forgot somehow? 😅 My library has 85 people waiting. I think I could use it so I‘ll read it. (edited) 2w
Kitta @Sparklemn thank you! 2w
ItsAnotherJen @Sparklemn Thank you for the article rec! I can't embrace my messiness right now though, I need to embrace throwing away or donating things. 😬 I think it would be so liberating to own less🎉🎉 2w

A lovely listen— I admire the cadence of Katherine May‘s prose. It‘s always a pleasure ❤️ this one ruminated beautifully on meaning-making, the personal magic created by nostalgia or encounters with nature. Perfect for walking through the botanical gardens near my home 🎄

I wouldn't have picked this one up if it wasn't for @sebrittainclark 's #AuldLangSpine list but I'm glad I did! This was a really helpful and encouraging book on how to keep your home livable without stressing yourself out more. I don't have ADHD or depression, which is a big focus of the author's life, but anyone can relate to feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks and she provides useful manageable tips
@monalyisha #Nonfiction2024

monalyisha Not my typical read but I‘m adding! 2mo
