Today's reading
It‘s time for another round of #LMPBC and sign-ups are open! Please join me in reading some short story collections (Group S), or join another reading group! It‘s a wonderful way to meet some fellow Littens and read some books you may not have discovered otherwise!! Head over to @suvata for the sign-up link! 😀📚
Unflinching in its portrayal of two tortured souls. Yes, it‘s gritty and violent, and delivers what you expect noir to deliver. But it‘s also a surprisingly touching love story. It‘s pretty awe-inspiring what Cain has done in a brief 100 pages.
Up next in the American Noir Of the 1930s & 40s anthology: They Shoot Horses, Don‘t They? by Horace McCoy
Finally getting a chance to dig into this. Most likely gonna read them in order. First up: The Postman Always Rings Twice.
Making this my next pick for Granny; she would‘ve been four years old when it was first published.
#Two4Tuesday #TheSpineView Thanks for the tag!
1. Noir fiction is a subgenre of crime fiction. In this subgenre, right and wrong are not clearly defined, while the protagonists are seriously and often tragically flawed.
2. The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain

Last book for #WinterGames finished yesterday. Read by Stanley Tucci which was a bonus. I remember reading Double Indemnity by the same author last year when the freeze started up in Texas. Is it a coincidence that I finish this one and we are about to have freezing weather the next few days 🤔 #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleigher 49 words for #WGWordSearch 137 words for #TreasureHunt #20in4
In this debut novel by Cain, there is lust, wickedness, violence and cold-blooded murder. The dialogue is brusque, the story moves quickly. Two illicit lovers commit a murder, and we read of the repercussions and fate that await them. As in the noir world, we know how things usually end. Worth a read. Maybe I will check out the sultry Lana Turner in the 1946 adaptation.
I‘m always amazed when short books get made into movies. This one is only 113 pages and apparently there‘s at least 2 adaptations. #page2screen #blameitonlitsy @veritysalter
This has been on my TBR for too long, so when I bought a copy for @Powered_By_Plants I got myself one too. A superb novella; Frank a drifter becomes besotted with Cora when he passes through her roadside diner, the only problem is, Cora is married. In their quest to get what they want, they forget that actions have consequences. #FabulousFebruaryReadathon
I love this book. The prose is perfect and just plain fun. Tight plot, dark af, a tiny masterpiece.
This book was a lot of fun and a nice way to end this #Readathon on. 3.5/5🌟 I'm actually really proud of myself I got this much in and completed two books even if I didn't actually complete the challenge, can't wait till next time.
Also this goes down as my P for title

Update on my #20in4 I started this book that I actually never heard of till I read the last book and so far it isn't disappointing me, just definitely a little old and a little racist but that is the time period for these people and even the author so I'm understanding, that's just how it be sometimes with older literature. #Readathon @Andrew65
So pleased I finally got around to reading this, had me very intrigued as they had banned it in Boston when first published. Nothing too shocking with what we are used to nowadays but very chilling and will stay with me for a bit.
Very interesting reading the different thoughts on the title, some believing it was based on a true crime committed by Ruth Snyder 1927
Thank you for my #elfswap @veritysalter couldn‘t stop reading 🥰

@veritysalter A very aHappy Christmas to you 🎄
Thank you so much for my #elfswap can‘t wait to Rick into my strawberry hearts and this book has been on my to read list for ages . Thank you @Avanders much 🥰
Thank you again @Avanders for sorting elf swap , had lots of fun .
Happy Christmas to you all ❤️ xxx
I read this classic noir yesterday. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The pulpy, noir, crime novel style of this book has been imitated since publication in 1934 and was even the inspiration for ‘The Stranger‘ by Albert Camus. The main character is a hardened, xenophobic, misogynistic, drifter and the woman he lusts after isn‘t any more likable than he is. The bits of sex and violence aren‘t shocking these days but it‘s a fast, fun read. Spoiler: There is no postman in this book!

I read this in 2019 and enjoyed it very much.
Man, the 30s were somethin‘ else, huh?...plot-wise, this book is so great. I can see why this made a name for Cain. Everyone in this book is just miserable, in the way they feel and in the way that they‘re just miserable human beings...just when you think you know how it‘s going to go, ya don‘t. It‘s a short read, but it‘s packed full. 184/1,001 #1001Books
I didn‘t realize this had been banned at one point
Love, when you get fear in it, it's not love anymore. It‘s hate.
Stealing a man's wife, that's nothing, but stealing his car, that‘s larceny.
Some #litsylove will be on its way tomorrow. 😍🤫

Published 1934. A young vagrant and the sexy bored wife of a restaurant owner plan to murder her husband. Excellent characters, plot and writing. Cain‘s first book was an instant success and made into a movie. I watched the movie for a #booktomovie challenge. #CenturyofMysteryChallenge too!
Recommended for mystery lovers.

@rubyslippersreads @cobwebmoth I finally made it to order some little parcels at book depository for you two. 😍💕 The parcels should arrive within the next two weeks. 😘 Hope you like what I choose for you. 👍
The lust story of two really shitty people unfold in the boonies of 1930s California. Frank Chambers and Cora Papadakis are an epic train wreck of a couple. White fragility, fuckboi logic and peak ain't shitness abounds. It's kind of impressive that Cain had me rooting for the demise of his characters so completely.
My creeping need to follow this twisty shitshow of a story to it's end was vexing. But, also, this title is everything.
"I had dinner with him last night, and he was crowing over me. He was pitying me, the sap. Sackett and I are enemies. We are the friendliest enemies that ever were. He'd sell his soul to the devil to put something over on me, and I'd do the same for him." #frenemies
Look what arrived today 💕💓

WHAT?!?!?! How have I not read this before now? I wanted a short audiobook for today and I got this friggin bombshell of a book. For some reason I thought this was a steamy romance novel about infidelity, but it's more of a triller about infidelity. If you need a fix of something reminiscent of Gone Girl, then read this. It's a classic for good reason!
This classic hard-boiled crime novel still holds up pretty well today. There's no real mystery to it, except to wonder how and when the protagonists will be brought to justice, but the prose (more reminiscent of Hemingway than Chandler) crackles and the story canters along with never a wasted word.
#BOTM came finally!
Read in 2 sittings, could've done it in 1. Fast paced, quick read, packs a lot of punches (😂😂see what I did there?) with a twist you don't necessarily see coming. Gives you a lot to ponder.
Another bookish mail. 😍😍😍 #foliofreaks #surprisemail @CrowCAH
My #24in48 stack. I‘m hoping to wrap up this week‘s #luminariesbuddyread by tomorrow and then I‘m excited to dive into this stack!
I had such a bad day at work today. 😪
But when I came home, these parcels where waiting for me. 😍
