The Gracekeepers
The Gracekeepers: A Novel | Kirsty Logan
For readers of The Night Circus and Station Eleven, a lyrical and absorbing debut set in a world covered by waterAs a Gracekeeper, Callanish administers shoreside burials, laying the dead to their final resting place deep in the depths of the ocean. Alone on her island, she has exiled herself to a life of tending watery graves as penance for a long-ago mistake that still haunts her. Meanwhile, North works as a circus performer with the Excalibur, a floating troupe of acrobats, clowns, dancers, and trainers who sail from one archipelago to the next, entertaining in exchange for sustenance. In a world divided between those inhabiting the mainland ("landlockers") and those who float on the sea ("damplings"), loneliness has become a way of life for North and Callanish, until a sudden storm offshore brings change to both their lives--offering them a new understanding of the world they live in and the consequences of the past, while restoring hope in an unexpected future.Inspired in part by Scottish myths and fairytales, The Gracekeepers tells a modern story of an irreparably changed world: one that harbors the same isolation and sadness, but also joys and marvels of our own age. From the Hardcover edition.

Set in a world where the ocean has overtaken most of the land, North is part of a traveling circus that she performs in with her bear and Callanish lives on an island alone where she performs burial rites for those who die on the water. The writing is beautifully descriptive and the world building intriguing but the plot seemed to get increasingly muddled. #creaturefeature #fourfoursin23

This is a difficult book to rate. It was a quiet story, slow and melancholy. This isn‘t the type of story I normally read, so I think it‘s going to take more time to process before I can fully decide. I did enjoy it though and if I wouldn‘t have been so busy this week, I‘m sure I would have had it finished in just a couple sittings.

One of only 2 books I‘ve bought this year without reading first, but I couldn‘t pass it up when I found it brand new for just a few dollars. High hopes for this.

Combo haul today! I got everything except Gracekeepers in the mail today and then I found Gracekeepers at half price books in clearance for only $3. A Like New hardback for super cheap and a book that I put on my tbr at he beginning of the year after some from ThoughtsOnTomes over on YouTube gushed about it. That book and Unlocked are the only books in this haul I haven‘t already read, so looking forward to reading them soon!

A lovely & intimate look at the lives of 2 women in a world almost entirely covered in water. North is the "bear-girl" in a dampling circus, attempting to hide her pregnancy & avoid a life on the land. Callanish is a gracekeeper, not quite a landlocker, not quite a dampling, who performs funeral rites for the dead. When their paths cross the 2 women find they have a suprising connection. Beautiful and bizarre-- AKA my favorite kind of book.

rachelsbrittain Anddd finished just in time to return to the library after my 4 hour drive today. Perfect 😅😅 6y

Not entirely sure where this story about a world almost entirely covered in water (and a vast divide between the landlockers and the "damplings" who live in boats) is going, but I'm interested to see. And I love the two main characters names: North and Callanish

This was an interesting fantasy novel . There's multiple POVs being showcased in alternate chapters . It's kind of a character study with very little plot involved . But it's beautifully written ! If you want to read about some interesting characters in a water-logged Earth , then give this a shot !

#25inFive wrap-up! My goal going into this readathon was "try to finish some books" and I finished 2 but also read a bunch from 3 other books, which I'm very happy with. Most importantly, I'm really loving 2 of the new books that I started (The Gracekeepers and The Unseen World). This readathon definitely inspired me to read more than normal even though I've been super busy! ???

Much-needed chill reading night after a very busy week/weekend. I really love the world so far in this book--the oceans cover all but tiny islands, and there's a lot of prejudice between those who live on land vs. the sea. #25inFive

I had such high hopes for this. It's a loan from a friend who rated it hugely. It also came recommended for fans of Station Eleven which I loved. Sadly I'm four chapters in and shelving for a while as it's not gripping me.

This book is gorgeous inside and out. Logan's debut novel is magical, full of a quiet wonderfulness and a floating circus. The story deals with being different and how the choices we make effect our lives and other's.
Logan writes in a way that put all my senses to work. I could feel the salt water crusted circus curtains rustling around me. I could see the glitter in the air. I could smell the sea.

Another great rereading experience ❤️

If it is a #wildworld you want, a wild world is what you are gonna get! In The Gracekeepers we have a world that is more water than land, we meet merpeople, a floating circus, a girl with her bear and a girl who mourns over people lost at sea. 🌊 this is one of the most beautiful books I own, and I just want to put it into everybody's hands.

I love #maps in books 😍😍😍
Going clockwise:
The Gracekeepers
Shadow and Bone
Assassin's Apprentice
Caraval
Three Dark Crowns
And the large beauty is the #foliosociety edition of The Princess Bride 😍

#LyricalApril #FolioFreaks

monalyisha I actually hate them, haha. If I open up a book and see a map it makes me seriously rethink reading it. They intimidate me! My brain doesn't do spatial orientation. 😂 That being said, some of my favorite books have had maps (The Magicians series, to name one)... so I usually just soldier on! #personalgrowth 8y
erzascarletbookgasm 🙌🏼I absolutely 💙maps in books. Love referring to them! 8y
Bookworm-Bobbie @erzascarletbookgasm me too. It helps me picture the setting more clearly, especially as my sense of direction is awful 😆 8y

Kalalalatja @monalyisha I don't always look at them much, but I do love a well designed book, so it is as much for the aesthetic reason I love them, as it is for the actual map 😄 8y
Kalalalatja @erzascarletbookgasm @Bookworm-Bobbie I find that the longer the book is, and the more places it moves through, the more I need the map! @Cinfhen as always, Folio just does everything right 👌 8y

🐻 🐻 🐻 I wanted to finish this book before the end of the year and made it with 45 minutes to spare. I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. It's a whole bunch of trippy weirdness...which is something I usually like but in this case left me scratching my head. I was left with so many questions about the world-building. There were so many things that just didn't make sense. Have any of you read it? I'd love to know your thoughts on it.

Moray_Reads I felt much the same, there were a lot of elements that I loved but it just felt incomplete and a little hollow at the end 8y
Foxyfictionista @Moray_Reads I would have liked a bit more explanation on the birds and why society became the way it is. Things like that. It seemed all over the place. 8y
DyAnne I agree. I loved the general atmosphere, but always felt like, "Um, what?" 8y

The hubs and I were awakened at 4am this last morning of the year to the melodious sound of our mugs and mixing bowls crashing to the kitchen floor. I was absolutely heartbroken because my mug collection consisted of a lot of mismatched mugs that had a lot of sentimental value. I can't wait until 2016 is over because it has been horrible from beginning to end. I'm hoping to finish this book tonight...if 2016 lets me live long enough. Yeesh.

Foxyfictionista And I can't get this damned sticker off of my beautiful book!!!! 😭😭😭 8y

Readaholics Oh no! I feel ya...and yes I hate stickers on my books! It violates their beauty. Sending good vibes for a great new year. 8y
CocoReads @Foxyfictionista I had a similar problem with the shelf that held my wine glasses and cartoon character glasses from my childhood. Fortunately I discovered the problem before the fall but it took my husband a month to fix it and so for the most part my glassware is still in boxes.... 8y
MicheleinPhilly Oh no! I'm the least crafty person ever but maybe you could make a mosaic or something out of the pieces??? 8y
MicheleinPhilly Oh and I THINK I've heard that nail polish remover works to remove stickers and glue residue. Although I would think it would bleach the cover. 8y

RohitSawant Sorry to hear about your mugs. Stickers always have me scowling as well. Hope you have a wonderful 2017. 8y
rabbitprincess Noooooo! How awful! The poor mugs 😱 8y
LeahBergen A white artist eraser works well on the remnants if you can get the paper off. Try a little olive oil or peanut butter on a paper towel and rub in small circles (if the cover is not too porous). A hair dryer may work, too. As you can see ... stickers make me CRAZY. And I'm so sorry about your mugs! 8y

Foxyfictionista @MicheleinPhilly what a great idea!!! I wish I had read this comment before we took the shards out to the bin. I'm not sure about the nail polish remover on this cover though. I think it might make things worse. Thanks for the suggestion though. 8y
Foxyfictionista @DeeLew @rohit-sawant @rabbitprincess Thank you! I've regained my composure now and am a bit less grumpy. 🙂 8y
Foxyfictionista @LeahBergen Wow, thanks for the suggestions! I might start with the hair dryer first. It sounds the least messy but that's really helpful! I hope you have a sticker-free new year! 8y
Foxyfictionista @Pandyfish @minkyb @tanner Thanks! What a rough day. 8y
