#TheBlackhouse #PeterMay #August2024 #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove2024

I enjoyed this beautifully written book, The Blackhouse by Peter May, very much. It was an interesting view of an isolated island and its habitants. The characters were memorable and the story was a definite page-turner. The ending was not expected and a complete surprise. I look forward to reading the other books in the trilogy. 7/31/2014

EadieB I am rereading this book, The Blackhouse by Peter May, as the new book 4, The Black Loch, will be out in September and I have found it very refreshing. Having read it 10 years ago, I have found out that I have forgotten most of the book. I will reread book 2, The Lewis Man, and 3, The Chessmen, also as I think I will find the same results. I will then be ready to read book 4, The Black Loch, in September when the book is published. 8/6/2024 (edited) 5mo

Liked this book as it gives back story of characters and incidents that are referred to in the second book The Lewis Man, which I read first. Love this trilogy, too bad it is only a trilogy and not more Fin Macleod books coming.

This riveting novel is set on the beautiful Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides,& a remote, desolate spit of a rock off its coast,An Sgeir. One can feel the biting cold, the ferocious wind,& sea storms‘ tangy salt thru the vivid & descriptive language. After 20 yrs,DI Fin MacLeod is summoned back from Glasgow to the island to investigate a murder.Fin‘s traumatic childhood & self protective”memory loss”has him leery of revisiting & reconnecting 🔽

Readergrrl I read this novel last year some time and when I finished I just had to look up the location and find out as much as I could about the bird hunt. Fascinating! 2y
kspenmoll 🔼With people and places. The summer before Fun left secondary school for Glasgow,he was invited on the annual guga pilgrimage. 10 chosen men braved the open sea to the rock of An Sgeir to cull 2,000 guga chicks & return with this delicate food. Pickpick

I‘m so glad I gave this book another try! I tried it in March and couldn‘t get into it. Then I saw reviews on Litsy so tried it again and I couldn‘t put it down. I liked flashing back to Fin‘s childhood. Damn he went through a lot! I didn‘t care for all the bird killing talk, but I understood why it was in there. Such a great mystery. I‘ll definitely continue with this series.

Pickpick

This was my #TartanNoir for #Booked2020 and I am so glad! I probably never would have read it on my own, and I loved it.

The murder is gruesome (ickiest postmortem I‘ve read for years), the detective character is so well developed, the backstory is rich, the mystery and secrets are perfectly laid out, the descriptions of the Isle of Lewis are vivid—the writing overall is fantastic. It‘s dark, brutal and lovely.

Will read the others!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

amywithbooks This is a great series! His standalone books are also worth checking out. 5y
Laughterhp Oh nice! I actually own this book and have been debating on whether or not to use it for the Tartan Noir prompt. (I‘m so behind on the challenge) 5y
Cinfhen Glad you found a new potential series🖤 5y

Book 6 of #7Books7Days of books that profoundly affected me. Peter May‘s description of The Isle of Lewis made me want to visit that area of Scotland. His books are mostly crime novels crafted in a way that you very rarely can guess who do it! All of May‘s books are page-turners!

Susanita Love this series! 5y

I picked this one up to fulfill the Tartan Noir prompt for #Booked2020. It sounded interesting and I thought some dark suspense would be a nice distraction. I'm about half way through and thus far this reads more like a drama about a man coming home juxtaposed with a coming of age tale. Where's the suspense? The murder is more like a tertiary storyline at this point. Does it get more suspense/thriller-ish?

Avanders What a disappointment... especially w a cover like that! 5y
Mitch I read this and loved the setting ( it was a pre-read before I spent a month on the island of Harris for work! Wanted to get in the mood!) but it didn‘t really offer up ‘suspense‘ .... 5y
TheKidUpstairs @Mitch it is well written, and has a sense of place, I think it's more of a disappointing marketing issue. Its branded as a tale of suspense, a detective investigating two pain by linked murders, and I'm getting almost none of that. It's too bad, and it seems a disservice to the book and the author. 5y

Currently rereading Afterimage by Helen Humphreys, and trying to stay interested in the tagged for #Booked2020 - Tartan Noir

My last couple picks have been rereads, and I'm finding it extremely comforting to revisit books I loved years ago.
