Argh, I forgot that I can't stand angsty realistic teen fiction. I have an adult child so I've lived through this twice already. Also, I hate how the narrator keeps talking about his mom “letting herself go.“ DNF for my #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

pickI throughly enjoyed this YA story of a grieving teen trying to live again after the death of his sister in an accident. The novel feels very true with devastating grief entertained with the minutia of every day teen angst.
pickI read this excellent YA novel during my class's SSR (silent sustained reading) time, so it took longer than it usually would have . . . because it was SO. Good. I just wanted to devour it! Federle has crafted a wonderful protagonist in Quinn, a teenager dealing with life and the death of his sister and first love and his dreams, all in a realistic and engaging way. Wonderful book.

PBS has released their list of 100 books for the Great American Read series that starts May 22. I‘m excited to see new(ish) and older classics on the list as well as books from other countries besides America. I‘ve read 28 1/2 books (most of the Wheel of Time series for the 1/2). pickI absolutely loved the book. The audio is read by the author and he is AWESOME. My favorite bit, though, was an interview with the author at the end. His advice for kids who feel different from everyone else is this:
“What gets you picked on as a kid is what gets you paid as an adult.” 💙💙💙💙
pick4.5/5. extra .5 for being set in my hometown; made it a lot more interesting when you know all the places being visited :)

pickGreat piece of YA. The audio book, read by Federle himself is very well done.

pickI stepped out of my YA Fantasy genre again for this book. I'm glad I did. It was quick and enjoyable. I do wish I would have held back and read this one in the summer at the beach. It would have made for the perfect pairing.

so-soThis book felt like actually interacting with a teen. Thoughts were not always connected, dialogue was not always sequenced, and there was an underlying structure which only one character knew. But it was an interesting look at how a family dealt with grief and how a teen moved on. #LitsyAtoZ #F

pickA short, lovely read with a wonderful take on the classic coming of age story. I absolutely loved all of the characters as well as the screenplay format some of it was in.
The Great American Whatever is one of those books that unfolds like a movie in your head. It also demands that you eat snacks while reading it!!
pickI've met Tim Federle at SLJ's Day of Dialog 2015. I told how much I enjoyed his 2 middle grade novels since they centered around Broadway shows. Hearing him reading this teen novel is a treat because this story deals with life, love and death with humor and tears.
Listening to this on Playaway. I do love Tim Federle's writing!

pickAbsolutely adored this. The relationships between friends, family, and self after a loss are explored honestly and sweetly.
pickA book that demands to be read in one day. Quinn is hilarious and blunt, and this novel was difficult yet enjoyable to read. It really made me think about personal experiences in my life and it drew some tears at the end. A wonderful story.
This book is hitting me where it hurts tonight.
52 pages and 6 chapters in and I can't stop. I'm always wary of reviews that say a character is "the new Holden Caulfield" or however it's phrased because Catcher is one of my all-time favorites, but this is pretty good. More reminiscent of Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I also love.

So far, I don't really enjoy this book; it's a slow and slightly boring start. Also, not fond of the characters so far, but I'm hoping to enjoy it by the time I finish it!!!
pickIf I could add an audio file to this review it would be of me screaming I LOVED THIS SO MUCH. The voice. The voice!!!!! And the characters and the story and the pitch perfectness of it all. One hundred thumbs up.
From this angle I can see that he is going to turn out genuinely cute someday. That sometimes I should let people just make up their own character description.
pickLoved Quinn, loved his best friendship and his crush, loved the movie refs. Since the author reads the audiobook, I may need to listen to that, too.
