SUMMARY: What is most notable about this funny, touching, memorable first novel from Stephen Chbosky is the resounding accuracy with which the author captures the voice of a boy teetering on the brink of adulthood. Charlie is a freshman. And while's he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. He's a wallflower--shy and introspective, and intelligent beyond his years, if not very savvy in the social arts. We learn about Charlie through the letters he writes to someone of undisclosed name, age, and gender, a stylistic technique that adds to the heart-wrenching earnestness saturating this teen's story. Charlie encounters the same struggles that many kids face in high school--how to make friends, the intensity of a crush, family tensions, a first relationship, exploring sexuality, experimenting with drugs--but he must also deal with his best friend's recent suicide. Charlie's letters take on the intimate feel of a journal as he shares his day-to-day thoughts and feelings: I walk around the school hallways and look at the people. I look at the teachers and wonder why they're here. If they like their jobs. Or us. And I wonder how smart they were when they were fifteen. Not in a mean way. In a curious way. It's like looking at all the students and wondering who's had their heart broken that day, and how they are able to cope with having three quizzes and a book report due on top of that. Or wondering who did the heart breaking. And wondering why. With the help of a teacher who recognizes his wisdom and intuition, and his two friends, seniors Samantha and Patrick, Charlie mostly manages to avoid the depression he feels creeping up like kudzu. When it all becomes too much, after a shocking realization about his beloved late Aunt Helen, Charlie retreats from reality for awhile. But he makes it back in due time, ready to face his sophomore year and all that it may bring. Charlie, sincerely searching for that feeling of "being infinite," is a kindred spirit to the generation that's been slapped with the label X. --Brangien Davis SUMMARY: What is most notable about this funny, touching, memorable first novel from Stephen Chbosky is the resounding accuracy with which the author captures the voice of a boy teetering on the brink of adulthood. The Perks of Being a Wallflower has been an emotional roller coaster of a reading experience for teens + grown-ups alike for two decades. This week, it comes to my pod! My longtime book friend and fellow freelancer Caitlin Flynn joins me for Episode 55 to discuss the universal appeal of Perks, to consider how many big subjects are too many for one book, to reminisce about AIM, and to unpack Chbosky‘s presentation of trauma. Link to listen in bio!

5 ☆ A coming of age story that gives you all the feels of your teenage youth. Charlie is a “wallflower” who doesn‘t realize his own significance, an observer who puts everyone‘s happiness before his own. He‘s a character many people can resonate with. The writing is amazing + is written as an #epistolary.
Read it if you‘re one of the last few like me that hadn‘t read it yet. #YA #TBR

I wasn‘t sure about this book at first.. Charlie is an odd character.. but he grows on you, like a fungus, lol. I ended up really enjoying it. It was funny but also sweet and sad. And a bonus, that I didn‘t realize before I started it is that I will count for an epistolary novel for #readharderchallenge. I didn‘t have a book chosen for that at all.

CarolynM Have you seen the film? I liked it even more than the book, it made Charlie more real for me. 6y

There are not enough stars for this book!
⭐️🌟✨💫
WOW this was so good - how did I miss it for so long?!?!

But the perk of being a latecomer 😉 is that there is a Spotify playlist for it.

So,
1. You should read this if like me, you somehow haven‘t. Like, this week. It‘s short - you can do it.
2. When you do, play the playlist. It will enhance your experience exponentially. And you will be infinite ♾

Kimberlone Read this for the first time in high school and it‘s still one of my favorite books of all time. I didn‘t know there was a playlist! 6y
Sweettartlaura @Kimberlone there is, and it‘s perfect ❤️🎶♾. Do yourself a favor -re-read this, & put it on repeat - you‘ll love it🥰 6y

This has got to be my favorite book of all times. I cried so much and every time i read it I cry again. I love how raw it is and how so many people can connect to it on so many different levels. I remember how disappointing the movie was because it seemed like so much was missing...but as every reader knows that‘s most movies. Would definitely recommend though.

When I saw the list, I had no idea what NSFP meant so I've been waiting for this day for an explanation 😂 I wasn't barred from reading anything as a kid, so that's out.
I thought I'd look up the most challenge/banned books in the US and see which I own. Not included are about 5-6 on my kindle. And I've only read a few of these 🤫

I'm probably going to earn brickbats for this but is there a movie you like better than the book?
I didn't believe such a thing existed until I saw 'The Perks Of Being A Wallflower'. I don't know if it was Emma Watson or how the story was depicted, but the movie was slightly better than the book.
#thereisaidit

StephanieGeiser Wild was the first movie I saw that I liked better than the book. That never happens to me but I found the author annoying in the book and most of that was cut out of the movie! 😂😂😂 7y

I read this book when I was 15 years old, which was right around the time it was published (1999). At the time, I probably only chose to read it because it was published by MTV, lol. Regardless, I ended up loving it and thinking it was my generation‘s Catcher in the Rye. I‘ve not seen the film, nor have I re-read the book since, but I‘m thinking next year I will re-read for the 20th anniversary.

#theperksofbeingawallflower #youngadult #ya

BiblioLitten Even I thought it was this generation's Catcher in the Rye. I really liked the movie too. 😊 7y
CarolynM This is one of the rare times when I prefer the movie. I liked the book, but I really loved the way the movie fleshed out Charlie's friends 7y
OrangeMooseReads I read this for the first time right around then as well and loved it. I saw and still do see many Catcher parallels. I hated the movie and shut it off after 30 ish minutes. 7y
