Great pick for #WithTheBanned @Jadams89

This was my first time reading Perks. I watched the movie many years ago and pretty much just remembered the scene pictured above.

Difficult topics dealt with respectively and with hope.

I hopped on the BannedWagon this month with @Jadams89 and crew to revisit one of the most important books in my own personal journey. If I read it for the first time now, I'm sure I'd think it's a perfectly fine coming-of age-story. But I read it as a teenager and so have no objectivity whatsoever; I still find it close to perfect. I'd never read anything at that age which captured in words the feelings I always thought were inexpressible. ⬇️⬇️

Andrea313 Charlie's feelings of being an outsider were so palpable to me then, and him finding himself in a handful of fellow outsiders, and importantly, in books and music, struck me on a cellular level. Mix tapes, aimless drives, Rocky Horror, and endless nights at Big Boy were the very fabric of my adolescence and I read now with nostalgia and gratitude for finding my way- with the help of artists who put shape and sense to my emotional landscape. ⬇️⬇️ 4d
Andrea313 My old, tattered copy from my youth is pictured here with the mixtapes I will never get rid of. ❤️🎵📼 #WithTheBanned 4d
Read4life Such powerful comments. 💙💙💙 I loved the reread just as much and my daughter will be reading it for the first time once finals are over. 3d
Andrea313 @Read4life I hope your daughter loves it! There have been many books that have spoken strongly to me at various points in my life but this one will always stand out. It's just what I needed when I discovered it and I hope she finds recognition and solace here. ❤️ 3d

(couldn't find the right book in the database)

So... This is a strange one.
It's definitely a good book, very well written, with an interesting structure that lost me a bit in the middle (lots and lots of POVs) but came together in the end. The characters are exceptionally good. And there is a strong message at its heart.

It is gritty and rough, but the story demands it.

I can't say anything negative about it... Yet, it left me unsatisfied.

A psychological thriller that I couldn‘t put down! Eve has a good life, good husband and is a high school maths teacher. Last year, the school where she teaches was rocked by a scandal involving a student/teacher affair. That student was Addie. This year Addie is in Eve‘s maths class and her husbands English class. There are so many twisting secrets and a great revenge plot. It was such a quick read with short chapters.

I‘m so happy I reread this one. It is just so good. I‘ve never watched the movie. My daughter told me she hasn‘t read the book or seen the movie. We plan on reading it together this summer & watching the movie afterwards. #raisingreaders #readbannedbooks

For a while I was reading it and was not really into it, Charlie being more of an observer than participant in his own life resonated with how I‘d felt in my life at times but I didn‘t really see where it was going & the ending came & blew me away completely not what I expected. The 20th anniversary afterword was cute.
Excited for the discussion #withthebanned
