Knots And Crosses
Knots And Crosses | Ian Rankin
The very first Rebus novel from the No.1 bestselling author. 'And in Edinburgh of all places. I mean, you never think of that sort of thing happening in Edinburgh, do you...?' 'That sort of thing' is the brutal abduction and murder of two young girls. And now a third is missing, presumably gone to the same sad end. Detective Sergeant John Rebus, smoking and drinking too much, his own young daughter spirited away south by his disenchanted wife, is one of many policemen hunting the killer. And then the messages begin to arrive: knotted string and matchstick crosses - taunting Rebus with pieces of a puzzle only he can solve.

My January #Bookspin list! I prepared it last week, and finally transferred it into my temp book journal aka moon datebook until my Etsy shop order arrives. The book journal is a new one for me. I‘ll post pics when it‘s here. I‘m having my delicious winter blend coffee courtesy of @Kshakal in my beautiful mug courtesy of @AmyK1 and plotting my day.

I thought a bit of crime might help me kick the romance rut I've fallen into & this one is on my #BookspinBingo list to fill the #Booked2020 #TartanNoir prompt. I quite enjoyed it for atmosphere & setting & the story wasn't bad. It certainly sets up the Rebus character, but there was something off about the tone. Having read the author's note about his youth & inexperience when writing, I think that was it. I might try another Rebus one day.

rockpools As usual 🙄 I jumped into the series near the end - Rebus was starting to work with the team again after ‘retirement‘, so quite a good place to start. Think I‘m probably more inclined to go back to the beginning now. (Fairly sure I hibernated this one about 10 years ago!!) 4y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 4y
Cinfhen Yay!!! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I feel just the same about this book. Good enough to try another, but not great. I agree that the debut nature of the book is part of why. 4y

Day 10 of #Top20Series #20Series20Days

Today am in Edinburgh for one of my favourite detective series, the Inspector Rebus Series. Ian Rankin has a great writing style, and helps they are set in Edinburgh. Love watching Ian talking about Rebus, always worth watching out for.

It‘s Djilba! (We have two springs here.) So I‘m starting the Spring portion of #booked2020, having finished the other three. My ideas so far :

Makes You Lol: maybe some Penny Reid?
Parent & Child Memoir : Wishful Drinking, or They Called Us Enemy, or Cheaper By the Dozen
Tartan Noir: Knots and Crosses
About Genocide : Tiamat's Wrath, or Maybe, or Salt
Pan Asian / Silk punk : JY Yang
Animal on Cover : Frogkisser, Flyaway, Shining Girls, Terrier

rockpools Two springs - how wonderful! 4y
Joanne1 Oh yes, I know this season well and have the hay fever to show for it. We also had snow here on Tuesday after a glorious warm(ish) weekend. So changeable. 4y

This was very different from what I normally read, I chose it for the #booked2020 Tartan Noir prompt. I liked the introduction by the author where he said how funny he finds the writing style in this first book now, and when I read it I agreed it was quite melodramatic. I enjoyed it though, and the authors intro made me want to read the rest of the series. I got through the whole thing in about 3 hours, so it was absolutely a page turner!

Read for #tartannoir the first in a series of Detective Rebus novels, I liked the strong sense of place and also the puzzle aspect of the mysteries as well as the back story of Rebus and how that tied into the murders. A good introduction to the character. I think the first in a series is always tricky as so much has to be established. This was short and fast-paced, a good one to read in a day. #booked2020

Despite being set in Edinburgh, Scotland Knots and Crosses is not a fun romp in the world of kilts and tartans. In fact, there‘s nary a Highlander about. It‘s not exactly a story you want to magically transport into. Instead it‘s a flawed MC trying to solve abductions of young girls in his city‘s underbelly.

It did not really take me that long to read this book. I just read some other books in between. If you like flawed characters, this book is full of them. I think I like John Rebus, but not very much. This is a police procedural and done very well. I enjoyed it immensely for a book from the 1980s. I had never heard of Ian Rankin, but I will have to read more of his Inspector Rebus books. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book starts with the kidnapping and murder of young girls, as the police investigation begins, Rebus receives letters with a piece of string with a Knot tied in it or Crosses made of matches. However, he doesn‘t link these to the murders, at first.

Ian Rankin has created a superbly drawn, trouble character and catches the atmosphere of Edinburgh and the slightly misogynistic 80‘s brilliantly. A thoroughly absorbing read.

Finally finished the June #whodunituk and what a cracker! Gritty, dark and grimy! There‘s a rawness to the characters and writing that is refreshing, the best Detective book I‘ve read for a long while! I‘m gutted I‘ve run out of time to read ‘In the name of the rose‘ but I‘ll be posting them out to you tomorrow @jenniferw88

Libby1 I‘m so glad you enjoyed this, @Caroline2 😊. 6y
Caroline2 @Libby1 I really enjoyed it! I‘ll defo be checking out the other books in the series and I‘ve ordered my own copy of the rose to read! 😉 6y

Caroline2 @TrishB oh yeah I feel mega smug and pat myself on the back when I get it right but really I suspect everyone throughout the book so not sure it really counts!? 😆 6y

“Rebus was no painter. His eyes beheld beauty not in reality but in the printed word. Standing in the waiting-room, he realised that in his life he had accepted secondary experience - the experience of reading someone else‘s thoughts - over real life.”

The “grass percolating water”?

Um, OK.

Cathythoughts 🤷🏻‍♀️strange one alright 7y
CrowCAH The dew on the grass?! 7y
CouronneDhiver 🤦🏽‍♀️ 7y
Libby1 @Cathythoughts , @CrowCAH , @CouronneDhiver - the author explains in the intro that as this was his first book there is sometimes some silly phrasing! Yes, I certainly gathered he was talking about dew, but it‘s such a goofy description! 6y

As a crime fan I don‘t know why it has taken me so long to read this series. I am however, pleased that I have now embarked on my journey with Rebus.

Rebus is the perfect leading main. He is intriguing, engaging and flawed everything you want in a leading man. The story is fast paced and keeps you guessing right to the end. The book also introduces a number of supporting cast who I hope we meet in future novels.

Andrew65 @josteele The Rebus Series is set in Edinburgh and is excellent, I love Ian Rankin‘s writing Style. 7y
somebooksaround Anything set in Scotland I am 100% down! Haha - can‘t wait to read! 7y
Andrew65 @josteele Me too! Love books set in Scotland. Knots and Crosses is quite a short book but a good introduction to the back story of John Rebus. 7y
SilversReviews Nice collage....I like Peter Robinson. 7y
Andrew65 @SilversReviews Inspector Banks is a great character, and they are wonderfully written books. Thanks 😊 (edited) 7y
SilversReviews @Andrew65 I have only read one book by this author and enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing. 7y

Pickpick

Detective Sergeant John Rebus is a complex character. Working in Edinburgh, he finds his life turned upside down when he‘s assigned to a task force to catch a serial killer preying in young girls. At the same time, he‘s receiving anonymous letters. There‘s a lot going on in this book including a couple of really interesting subplots. This is the first in the series and it won‘t be the last that I read. Thanks for the recommendation Andrew65!

Andrew65 Great to see you enjoyed it, I think they only get better. 7y
Richryan52 @andrew65. Do you have to read them in order like the Daniel Silva books? 7y
Andrew65 @Richryan52 I have read them in order and think they are possibly better this way due to his links to one character but still think they would stand up well if read out of order. 7y
Richryan52 @andrew65. Thanks. Silva must be read in order because of spolers 7y

One of my favourite Detective series which is set in my favourite city, Rebus and Edinburgh respectively, currently has #21 books in the series. It all started off with Knots and Crosses, and the 21st book is Rather Be The Devil. Knots and Crosses is a great introduction to the series! Definitely a 5 star series, I hope Ian Rankin still writes more. #NovemberByTheNumbers #Twenty-One

Richryan52 @andrew65 just checked this out on your recommendation 7y
Andrew65 @Richryan52 It is a great series and love the feel of the writing and in my opinion the series only gets better. Ian Rankin is a real master of his art and great to listen to about writing and the central character. Enjoy, I will look forward to your thoughts. 7y
